  • It is established that the perceived image contrast is affected by surround luminance. In order to get the same perceived image contrast, the optimum surround compensation ratios for those surround conditions is needed. Much research has been performed for dark, dim, and average surrounds. In this study, a wide range of surround luminance from dark up to $2087cd/m^2$ was considered. Using magnitude estimation method, the change in perceived brightness of six test stimuli was measured under seven surround conditions; dark, dim, 2 levels of average, bright, and 2 levels of over-bright surrounds. To drive the perceived image contrast from the perceived brightness, two different definitions of contrast were tested. Their calculated results were compared with the visual data of our previous work. And to conclude, the perceived contrast compensation ratios were 1:1.11:1.2 for average, dim and dark surrounds. These were close to CIECAM02 model (1:1.17:1.31). Besides, for average, bright, over-bright1 and over-bright2 surrounds the ratios 1:1.17:1.42:1.69 were determined. For intermediate or more extreme surround conditions, the compensation ratio was obtained from the linear interpolation or extrapolation.

  • The dlm (disease lesion mimic) mutant of soybean (Glycine max L. Merr) shows the similar lesion of a soybean disease caused by a fungus, Corynespora cassilcola. The lesion was examined at cellular and molecular level. Trypan blue staining result indicated that cell death was detectable in the entire region of leaves excluding veins when the lesions had already been developed. We found that the mesophyll cells of palisade layer in the dim mutant appeared to be wider apart from each other. The chloroplasts of the dim mutant cells contained bigger starch granules than those in normal plants. We also found that the lesion development of dlm plant was light-dependent and the starch degradation during the dark period of diurnal cycle was impaired in the mutant. Three soybean pathogenesis-related genes, PR-1a, PR-4, and PR-10, were examined for their expression patterns during the development of disease lesion mimic. The expression of all three genes was up-regulated to some extent upon the appearance of the disease lesion mimic. Although the exact function of DLM protein remains elusive, our data would provide some insight into mechanism underling the cell death associated with the dim mutation.

  • Objectives: Exposure to light at night has become pervasive in modern society. The impact of dim artificial light at night (dALAN) exposure on sleep and fatigue is not well recognized. We aim to study the impact of dALAN exposure during sleep on human fatigue. Methods: 30 healthy young male volunteers from 21 to 29 years old were enrolled in the study. They were randomly divided into two groups depending on light intensity (Group A : 5 lux and Group B : 10 lux). Data were gathered from each participant after each night with no light (Night 1) followed by the next night (Night 2) with two different dim light conditions (5 or 10 lux) by means of self-reported fatigue scale. Results: Exposure to dALAN during sleep was significantly associated with increased overall fatigue (F = 19.556, p < 0.001) and ocular discomfort (F = 5.671, p = 0.028). Conclusion: We found that dALAN during sleep likely affects human fatigue in some aspects. These findings indicate that dALAN during sleep exerts a negative effect on human fatigue.

  • Four series (S, M, R, and W) of Alternaria longipes isolates were obtained based on consecutive selection with Dimethachlon (Dim) and ultraviolet irradiation. These isolates were then characterized according to their tolerance to Dim, sensitivity to osmotic stress, and phenotypic properties. All the selected Dim-resistant isolates showed a higher osmosensitivity than the parental strains, and the last generation was more resistant than the first generation in the M, R, and W series. In addition, the changes in the Dim resistance and osmotic sensitivity were not found to be directly correlated, and no distinct morphologic characteristics were found among the resistant and sensitive isolates, with the exception of the resistant isolate K-11. Thus, to investigate the molecular basis of the fungicide resistance, a group III two-component histidine kinase (HK) gene, AlHK1, was cloned from nineteen A. longipes isolates. AlHK1p was found to be comprised of a six 92-amino-acid repeat domain (AARD), HK domain, and response regulator domain, similar to the Os-1p from Neurospora crassa. A comparison of the nucleotide sequences of the AlHK1 gene from the Dim-sensitive and -resistant isolates revealed that all the resistant isolates contained a single-point mutation in the AARD of AlHK1p, with the exception of isolate K-11, where the AlHK1p contained a deletion of 107 amino acids. Moreover, the AlHK1p mutations in the isolates of each respective series involved the same amino acid substitution at the same site, although the resistance levels differed significantly in each series. Therefore, these findings suggested that a mutation in the AARD of AlHK1p was not the sole factor responsible for A. longipes resistance to dicarboximide fungicides.

  • The present study was carried out to investigate effects of various factors such as sire, bovine leukemia virus(BLV) carrier/non-carrier, parity, calving month and lactation periods on somatic cell count(SCC) and milk components in dairy cows. The animals calved from January 2001 to March 2004. Milk samples were collected every 30 $\pm$ 5 days in milk(DlM), and somatic cell count and milk components were analysed by Somascope MK2/Lactoscope FTIR Bovine Leukemia Virus(BLV) was detected by ELISA method. The lactation periods were divided into five periods; (1) 30DIM, (2) 31 to 6ODIM, (3) 61 to 120DIM, (4) 121 to 180DIM, and (5) more than 180DIM. The level of SCC and milk components in all lactation periods were significantly affected by sire, parity, calving month, lactation period and BLV carrier/non-carrier. The results suggest that BLV carrier/non-carrier analysis in a herd may be necessary if milk quality is low owing to a high SCC. BLV carrier/non-carrier did not affect milk protein content for all lactation periods.

  • In this paper, we study the third order ordinary differential equation : $$x'(t)=f(t,x(t),x'(t),x'(t)),t{\in}(0,1)$$ subject to the boundary value conditions: $$x'(0)=x'(\xi),x'(1)=^{m-3}{\Sigma}_{i=1}{{\beta}x'({\eta}i),x'(1)=0}$$. Here ${\beta}_{i}{\in}R,\;^{m-3}{\Sigma}_{i=1}\;{\beta}_{i}\;=\;1,\;0<{\eta}_1<{\eta}_2<{\cdots}<{\eta}_{m-3}<1,\;0<\xi<1$. This is the case dimKer L = 2. When the ${\beta}_i$ have different signs, we prove some existence results for the m-point boundary value problem at resonance by use of the coincidence degree theory of Mawhin [12, 13]. Since all the existence results obtained in previous papers are for the case dimKerL = 1, our work is new.

  • We have constructed a 3-dim hydrodynamics code called BTSPH. The fluid dynamics part of the code is based on the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH), and for its Poisson solver the binary tree (BT) scheme is employed. We let the smoothing length in the SPH algorithm vary with space and time, so that resolution of the calculation is considerably enhanced over the version of SPH with fixed smoothing length. The binary tree scheme calculates the gravitational force at a point by collecting the monopole forces from neighboring particles and the multipole forces from aggregates of distant particles. The BTSPH is free from geometric constraints, does not rely on grids, and needs arrays of moderate size. With the code we have run the following set of test calculations: one-dim shock tube, adiabatic collapse of an isothermal cloud, small oscillation of an equilibrium polytrope of index 3/2, and tidal encounter of the polytrope and a point mass perturber. Results of the tests confirmed the code performance.
