We compare insolation results calculated from two well-known empirical formulas (Socket and Beaudry's SB73 formula and the original Smithsonian (SMS) formula) and a radiative transfer model using input data predicted from meteorological weather-forecast models, and review the accuracy of each method. Comparison of annual mean daily irradiance values for clear-sky conditions between the two formulas shows that, relative to the SMS, the SB73 underestimates spring values by 9 W $m^{-2}$ in the northern Adriatic Sea, although overall there is a good agreement between the annual results calculated with the two formulas. We also elucidate the effect on SMS of changing the 'Sun-Earth distance factor (f)', a parameter which is commonly assumed to be constant in the oceanographic context. Results show that the mean daily solar radiation for clear-sky conditions in the northern Adriatic Sea can be reduced as much as 12 W $m^{-2}$ during summer due to a decrease in the f value. Lastly, surface irradiance values calculated from a simple radiative transfer model (GM02) for clear-sky conditions are compared to those from SB73 and SMS. Comparison with iu situ data in the northern Adriatic Sea shows that the GM02 estimate gives more realistic surface irradiance values than SMS, particularly during summer. Additionally, irradiance values calculated by GM02 using the buoy meteorological fields and ECMWF (The European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts) meteorological data show the suitability of the ECMWF data usage. Through tests of GM02 sensitivity to key regional meteorological factors, we explore the main factors contributing significantly to a reduction in summertime solar irradiance in the Adriatic Sea.

$^1H$ NMR spectra for monocyanide ligated ferriprotoporphyrin(hemin) complex and dicyanide coordinated hemin complex in dimethylsulfoxide(DMSO-$d_6$) solution have been recorded and analyzed. NMR spectra of hemin-cyanide complexation in DMSO-$d_6$ exhibit that the cyanide ligation to hemin is temperature-dependent. Thermodynamic parameters for the monocyanide ligated hemin to dicyanide ligated hemin are consistent with endothermic process with ${\Delta}H^{\circ}=736.6cal/mol$ and ${\Delta}S^{\circ}=16.4eu$. Detailed analysis of the anomalous deviation from Curie behavior for CN/DMSO coordinated hemin complex demonstrates the presence of a high spin character, and this weaker axial field relative to the purely low-spin dicyanide hemin complex is supposed to attribute to instantaneously ruptured iron-DMSO bond. This complex may serve as a useful model to characterize electronic/molecular structure of hemoproteins, which one of axial ligands is weak.
Critical heat flux (CHF) has traditionally been evaluated using look-up tables or empirical correlations for nuclear power plants. However, under complex moving condition, it is necessary to reconsider the CHF characteristics since the conventional CHF prediction methods would no longer be applicable. In this paper, the additional forces caused by motions have been added to the annular film dryout (AFD) mechanistic model to investigate the effect of moving condition on CHF. Moreover, a theoretical model of the natural circulation loop with additional forces is established to reflect the natural circulation characteristics of the loop system. By coupling the system loop with the AFD mechanistic model, a CHF prediction program called NACOM for natural circulation loop under moving condition is developed. The effects of three operating conditions, namely stationary, inclination and rolling, on the CHF of the loop are then analyzed. It can be clearly seen that the moving condition has an adverse effect on the CHF in the natural circulation system. For the calculation parameters in this paper, the CHF can be reduced by 25% compared with the static value, which indicates that it is important to consider the effects of moving condition to retain adequate safety margin in subsequent thermal-hydraulic designs.

The Puebla-Morelos Earthquake (Mw 7.1) occurred in Mexico in 2017 causing 44 buildings to collapse in Mexico City. This work evaluates the non-linear response of a 6-story reinforced concrete (RC) frame prototype model with masonry infill walls on upper floors. The prototype model was designed using provisions prescribed before 1985 and was subjected to seismic excitations recorded during the earthquakes of 1985 and 2017 in different places in Mexico City. The building response was assessed through a damage index (DI) that considers low-cycle fatigue of the steel reinforcement in columns of the first floor, where the steel was modeled including buckling as was observed in cases after the 2017 earthquake. Isocurves were generated with 72 seismic records in Mexico City representing the level of iso-demand on the structure. These isocurves were compared with the location of 16 collapsed (first-floor column failure) building cases consistent with the prototype model. The isocurves for a value greater than 1 demarcate the location where fatigue failure was expected, which is consistent with the location of 2 of the 16 cases studied. However, a slight increase in axial load (5%) or decrease in column cross-section (5%) had a significant detrimental effect on the cumulated damage, increasing the intensity of the isocurves and achieving congruence with 9 of the 16 cases, and having the other 7 cases less than 2 km away. Including column special detailing (tight stirrup spacing and confined concrete) was the variable with the greatest impact to control the cumulated damage, which was consistent with the absence of severe damage in buildings built in the 70s and 80s.
In this paper, effective thermal conductivities of water-based $Al_2O_3$-nanofluids with low concentration from 0.01 vol. % to 0.3 vol. % are experimentally obtained by transient hot wire method (THWM). The water-based $Al_2O_3$-nanofluids are manufactured by two-step method which is widely used. To examine suspension and dispersion characteristics of the water-based $Al_2O_3$-nanofluids, Zeta potential as well as transmission electron micrograph (TEM) is observed. We confirm the manufactured $Al_2O_3$-nanofluids have good suspension and dispersion. The effective thermal conductivities of the water-based $Al_2O_3$-nanofluids with low concentration are enhanced up to 1.64% compared with that of DI water at $21^{\circ}C$. In addition, experimental results are compared with theoretical results from Jang and Choi model.

Conventional synchronous design circuits cannot only satisfy the timing requirement of the low voltage digital systems, but also they may generate wrong outputs under the influence of PVT variations and aging effects. Therefore, in this paper, a NCL (Null Convention Logic) design as an asynchronous design method has been proposed, where the NCL method doesn't require any timing analysis, and it has a very simple design methodology. Base on the NCL method, a new low power reliable ALU has been designed and implemented using MagnaChip-SKhynix 0.18um CMOS technology. The experimental results of the proposed NCL ALU have been compared to those of a conventional pipelined ALU in terms of power consumption and speed.

The EGR system is one of important components in diesel engine. The regulation on NOx emission has been tightened up. Therefore, it is a significant issue to develop and commercialize the high efficient EGR cooler system that reduces NOx emission in DI diesel engine. Key performance factor of the EGR cooler system is how to properly design both wavy cooling fins and gas tubes. This paper proposes a high efficient EGR cooler that has been upgraded with both the optimized wavy cooling fins and the improved shape of structure. The evaluation of the heat exchange efficiency, outlet temperature, and gas pressure drop of the EGR cooler is performed with the prototype of the proposed EGR cooler. The result shows a good solution and will be implemented to the model of a clean diesel engine being developed for both domestic and overseas market.
In this study, we try to compare different intensity measures for evaluating nonlinear response of bridge structure. This paper presents seismic analytic fragility of a three-span concrete girder highway bridge. A complete detail of bridge modeling parameters and also its verification has been presented. Fragility function considers the relationship of intensities of the ground motion and probability of exceeding certain state of damage. Incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) has been subjected to the bridge from medium to strong ground motions. A suite of 20 earthquake ground motions with different range of PGAs are used in nonlinear dynamic analysis of the bridge. Complete sensitive analyses have been done on the response of bridge and also efficiency and practically of them are studied to obtain a proficient intensity measure for these types of structure by considering its sensitivity to the period of the bridge. Three dimensional finite element (FE) model of the bridge is developed and analyzed. The numerical results show that the bridge response is very sensitive to the earthquake ground motions when PGA and Sa (Ti, 5%) are used as intensity measure (IM) and also indicated that the failure probability of the bridge system is dominated by the bridge piers.
In the paper, the authors propose the application of operational deflection shapes (ODS) for the detection of structural changes in technical objects. The ODS matrix is used to formulate the spatial filter that is further used for damage detection as a classical modal filter (Meirovitch and Baruh 1982, Zhang et al. 1990). The advantage of the approach lies in the fact that no modal analysis is required, even on the reference spatial filter formulation and other components apart from structural ones can be filtered (e.g. harmonics of rotational velocity). The proposed methodology was tested experimentally on a laboratory stand, a frame-like structure, excited from two sources: an impact hammer, which provided a wide-band excitation of all modes, and an electro-dynamic shaker, which simulated a harmonic component in the output spectra. The damage detection capabilities of the proposed method were tested by changing the structural properties of the model and comparing the results with the original ones. The quantitative assessment of damage was performed by employing a damage index (DI) calculation. Comparison of the output of the ODS filter and the classical modal filter is also presented and analyzed in the paper. The closing section of the paper describes the verification of the method on a real structure - a road viaduct.
10kV IGCT has been recently developed and has the potential to push wind turbine systems to higher power and voltage rating. Converters employing IGCTs need snubber and OVP circuit to limit the rate of current's rising and peak over voltage across IGCT during turn on and off state, respectively. The conventional RCD snubber which is used in such power converter dissipates a significant amount of power. In order to reduce the amount of energy lost by conventional RCD snubber, this paper proposes flyback type snubber comprising two coils wound on a magnetic core. The flyback snubber not only meets all of the IGCTs characteristics during on and off-state but also significantly saves the power loss. Modern magnetic model using permeance-capacitance analogy leads to more accurate loss analysis of flyback type di/dt snubber circuit in 3-level NPC type back-to-back VSC. In turns, the comparison between conventional and flyback type snubber yield the effectiveness of proposed snubber in wind turbine systems.
