Three kinds of serine protease inhibitors, members of the Bowman-Birk trypsin inhibitor, were purified from Dolichos lablab seeds and named Dolichos protease inhibitor 1, 2 and 3 (DI-1, DI-2 and DI-3), respectively. Each inhibitor showed a single band with gel mobility at around 15.9, 12.1 and 14.6 kDa on 20% SDS-PAGE under reducing conditions. To characterize inhibitory specificity, the inhibition constant (Ki) for these inhibitors was measured against several known serine proteases. All three Dolichos protease inhibitors (DI-1, DI-2 and DI-3) inhibited the activity of trypsin and plasmin, but had no effect on thrombin and kallikrein (either for human plasma kallikrein or for porcine pancreas kallikrein). DI-1 inhibited chymotrypsin most effectively (Ki = $3.6{\times}10^{-9}\;M$), while DI-2 displayed inhibitory activity for porcine pancreatic elastase (Ki = $6.2{\times}10^{-8}\;M$). Pre-treatment of the 33 mg/kg of DI-mixture (active fractions from $C_{18}$ open column chromatography that included DI-1, DI-2 and DI-3) inhibited the induction of pseudomonal elastase-induced septic hypotension and prevented an increase in bradykinin generation in pseudomonal elastase-treated guinea pig plasma. Also, the increase of kallikrein activity, by injection of pseudomonal elastase, was inhibited by the pretreatment of the DI-mixture in a guinea pig. Since the DI-mixture had no inhibitory effect on kallikrein activity when Z-Phe-Arg-MCA was used as a substrate in vitro, its inhibitory activity in the pseudomonal elastase-induced septic hypotension model might not be due to a direct inhibition of plasma kallikrein in the activation cascade of the Hageman factor and prekallikrein system. These results suggest that the Dolichos DI-mixture might be used as an inhibitor in pathogenic bacterial protease-induced septic shock.

We developed a non self-aligned poly-silicon TFTs fabrication process at two different temperatures on spin-coated polyimide layer above Si-wafer. After TFTs fabrication, the polyimide layer was mechanically released from the Si-wafer and the devices characteristics were compared. In addition self-heating and hot-carrier induced instabilities were analysed.

2,4-Di-(2-vinyloxyethoxy)benzylidenemalononitrile (2a), methyl 2,4-di-(2-vinyloxyethoxy)benzylidenecyanoacetate (2b), 3,4-di-(2-vinyloxyethoxy)benzylidenemalononitrile (4a), and methyl 3,4-di-(2-vinyloxyethoxy)benzylidenecyanoacetate (4b), 2,5-di-(2-vinyloxyethoxy)benzylidenemalononitrile (6a), and methyl 2,5-di-(2-vinyloxyethoxy)benzylidenecyanoacetate (6b) were prepared by the condensation of 2,4-di-(2-vinyloxyethoxy)benzaldehyde (1), 3,4-di-(2-vinyloxyethoxy)benzaldehyde (3), and 2,5-di-(2-vinyloxyethoxy)benzaldehyde (5) with malononitrile or methyl cyanoacetate, respectively. Trifunctional divinyl ether monomers 2, 4 and 6 were polymerized readily by free radical initiators to give optically transparent swelling poly(vinyl ethers) 7-9. Polymers 7-9 were not soluble in common organic solvents such as acetone and DMSO due to crosslinking. Polymer 7-9 showed a thermal stability up to 300 ℃ in TGA thennograms.

The present study aims to show how the problem of reproducing, as closely as possible, binders of historic mortars by mixing raw materials which are commercially available, can be formulated as a linear optimization problem. The study points out that by mixing five standard raw materials (end-members) it is possible to obtain mortar binders with the almost same chemical compositions of those determined on the historic and archaeological mortar samples studied in some recent scientific papers. An advanced function of the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, the Solver add-in, was used for the calculation of the right amount of each raw material to be mixed for producing the new binders. This approach could be useful to provide an optimal solution in the process of restoration of ancient monuments, where it is necessary to replace the historic mortars with new highly compatible repair mortars.

Hedera rhombea (HR) has been used for treatments of hemorrage, chronic catarrh, jaundice, lithisis and convulsion. This study was done to isolate active compounds that have protective effect on liver damage. BuOH and EtOAc fractions of HR recovered serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT), glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) and ${\gamma}-glutamyltranspeptidase$ (${\gamma}-GTP$) activities in CCl4 treated rats. We isolated 7 phenolic compounds from BuOH and EtOAc fractions, which were identified as 3-caffeoyl quinic acid, 3,4-di-O-caffeoyl quinic acid, 3,5-di-O-caffeoyl quinic acid, 4,5-di-O-caffeoyl quinic acid, caffeic acid, methyl 3,4-di-O-caffeoyl quinic acid and methyl 3,5-di-O-caffeoyl quinic acid by chemical and spectral analysis. These compounds reduced significantly serum GOT and GPT elevated by CCl4 treatment in rats, and 3-caffeoyl quinic acid, 3,5-di-O-caffeoyl quinic acid and caffeic acid also showed mild inhibitory activity against human immunodeficiency virus.

Poly(phenylene oxide)s were used to prepare flat, integrally skinned self-supporthed asymmetric membranes by dry-wet phase separption. The intrinsic ideal gas selectivity of poly- (2,6-dimethy-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PMPO) was retained in the membranes, and improved by a coating with silicone rubber. Polymers of the same class were coated of UF supports with a silicon rubber gutter layer, yielding composite membranes with high flux but lower selectivity. The effect of th glutaraldehyde cross-linking of sodium alginate (SA) membranes on the mobility of water and ethanol has been studied with pfg nmr. Crosslinking reduces water self-diffusion, and does not seem to be stable on the timescale of weeks.

The aim of this study is to validate an integrated air monitoring approach for assessing airborne formaldehyde (FA) in the workplace. An active sampling by silica gel impregnated with 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine, a passive solid phase microextraction technique using O-(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorobenzyl)hydroxylamine as on-fiber derivatization reagent, an electrochemical direct-reading monitor, and an enzyme-based badge were evaluated and tested over a range of 0.020-5.12 ppm, using dynamically generated FA air concentrations. Simple linear regression analysis showed the four methods were suitable for evaluating airborne FA. Personal and area samplings in 12 anatomy pathology departments showed that the international occupational exposure limits in the GESTIS database were frequently exceeded. This monitoring approach would allow a fast, easy-to-use, and economical evaluation of both current work practices and eventual changes made to reduce FA vapor concentrations.

In questa tesi ho focalizzanto sui due romanzi di Elsa Morante: Menzogna e Sortilegio e L'isola di Arturo, riferendo i fenomeni generali delle narratrici italiane. Le scrittrici si sono limitate a scegliere i temi e i sentimenti dei personaggi nell' ambiente sociale in cui si prevalgono i valori della famiglia patriarcale. Quasi tutti i personaggi dei romanzi di Morante sono figurati dall'esperienza propria della sua vita. Specialmente la protagonista della Menzogna e sortilegio, Elisa si identifica della Morante. La fantasia di Elisa ci esprime il sogno non realizzato dei suoi genitori. Arturo è preso dal velo fantastico di Maia, vivendo felicemente nell'isola di Procida. Questo mondo illusorio è quello psicologico creato dall'autrice e fa raggiunre alla vita totale dei suoi abitanti. In questi due romanzi ho messo in rilievo il mondo immaginario e letterario di Elsa Morante: nel primo romanzo, quello creato e ricordato da Elisa, nel secondo, quello infantile ricordato dalle memorie di Arturo. In questo mondo irrazionale i nostri personaggi possono trovare riposo dimenticando il dolore reale e ottenendo la totalità esistenziale, di cui parla Georg Luckás nel La teoria del romanzo.

Al centro dell'interesse di Strehler ci sono sempre l'uomo e le sue azioni, e l'uomo e la posizione del teatro. Inoltre, nei suoi teatri vengono alla luce i rapporti che interessano l'uomo e la societa', l'uomo e se stesso, l'uomo e la storia, l'uomo e la politica. Strehler interpreta sempre i testi prendendo in considerazione la contemporaneita' e completa la rappresentazione strutturandola in un sistema implacabilmente coerente di segni scrulolosi. Poiche' le sue opere, anche se le stesse, sono rappresentate ogni volta con significati diversi a secondo del tempo, non si tratta soltanto di rivivere le opere, ma di metterle in scena in nuove versioni che hanno significati che interpretano i cambiamenti avvenuti. Questo e' anche il caso de I giganti della montagna. Nella prima regia di quest'opera, Strehler cerca di mettere in evidenza una concreta e generale storia umana attraverso il mito, e un messaggio che è al tempo stesso di disperazione e di fede nell'uomo. Un messaggio di perdono e di pietà. Pietà per tutti. Nella seconda regia, egli incarna, attraverso il vuoto dell'immobilita' e il silenzio, la vita della poesia. Cerca di rappresentare l'estremo degli effetti scenici attraverso la minima mobilita' in una scena immobile, e attraverso il massimo grido di dolore in una scena di silenzio. E anche i personaggi sono divisi in due diverse categorie. 'Gli scalognati', che creano 'teatro puro' non per un pubblico ma per puro giuoco, e 'la compagnia dei comici', che crea 'teatro rappresentato' che implica la possibilita' dell'interprete condizionato dai rischi, dagli errori di valutazione e d'interpretazione e che resta legato ad una realta' concreta. Attraverso questo contrasto egli vuole esprimere "il timore che nonostante tanta "rivoluzione" giovanile intorno, il cammino della societa' degli uomini verso l'abbandono di alti ideali e valori, fosse accelerato e quasi ineluttabile". Nella terza regia, i due mondi si incontrano in uno spazio dove realta' e sogno si confondono. Non sono piu' contrapposti. E' come "una tragica contestazione che i Giganti hanno vinto e che ci hanno, consapevoli o inconsapevoli, travolti, che non siamo piu gli stessi, che stiamo precipitando". Ma egli non dispera, benche' rappresenti la condizione tragica, dice al pubblico di "comunicare in silenzio la reciprocita' delle sconfitte. al di la' delle parole che non esistono".
