This study is on the application of TOPMODEL-topographic based hydrologic model-to the runoff analysis, The test area was the ssang-chi watershed which is mountainous catchment located in the upstream of the sumjin-gang basin and the watershed area is $126.7km^2$. The six's hourly runoff and precipitation data was selected in the 2006 ~ 2009 year. And the model parameters are calibrated using observed runoff data by Pattern Search method. The topographic index of the ssang-chi catchment was produced by digital elevation model(DEM) of 100m grid. As a results of the analysis, the parameters of model, a decay facter(m), transmissivity(T0), and the unsaturated zone delay(TD) are sensible to hydrologic response, and the simulated runoff data are in good agreement with observed runoff data.
LIDAR data are useful for forest applications such as bare-earth DEM generation for forest areas, and estimation of tree height and forest biomass. As a core preprocessing procedure for most forest applications, this study attempts to develop an efficient method to detect forest areas from LIDAR data. First, we suggest three perceptual cues based on multiple return characteristics, height deviation and spatial distribution, being expected as reliable perceptual cues for forest area detection from LIDAR data. We then classify the potential forest areas based on the individual cue and refine them with a bi-morphological process to eliminate falsely detected areas and smoothing the boundaries. The final refined forest areas have been compared with the reference data manually generated with an aerial image. All the methods based on three types of cues show the accuracy of more than 90%. Particularly, the method based on multiple returns is slightly better than other two cues in terms of the simplicity and accuracy. Also, it is shown that the combination of the individual results from each cue can enhance the classification accuracy.

PURPOSES : Road subsidence occurs owing to road cavities, which cause many social and environmental problems, especially in cities. Recently, road cavities were detected by various ground radars and repair works were carried out against the detected cavities. The condition assessments related to the road cavities are necessary to understand the potential risk of the cavities. Therefore, in this study, a numerical study was performed to assess the various conditions of road cavities. METHODS : The numerical method adopted in this study is the discrete element approach, and it is suitable for analyzing the condition because it can consider the movement of the soil particles in the surrounded cavity areas. In addition, the triaxial test was modeled and performed under various cavity conditions inside the specimens. RESULTS : The conditions of different cavity locations and shapes were analyzed to identify the effect of cavity state. Three general cases of particle size distributions were formulated to identify the effect of surrounding ground conditions. As a result, the degree of decrement and volumetric strain were varied depending on the locations and shapes of the cavity. Only minor changes were observed when the particle size distributions were altered. CONCLUSIONS : The strength reduction was higher when the cavity formed was larger and located in the upper zone. Similar to the cavity shape, strength reduction and volume deformation are more influenced by the width than the length of the cavities. There is an influence from ground conditions such as the particle size distribution, especially on the wide cavity.

In order to examine the primary trends and characteristics of geological lineaments along the southwestern boundary of Okcheon zone, we carried out the analysis of geological lineament trends over six selected sub-areas using Landsat-5 TM images and digital elevation model. The trends of lineaments is determined by a minimum variance method, and the resulting geological lineament map can be obtained through generalized Hough transform. We have corrected look direction biases reduces the interpretability of remotely sensed image. An approach of histogram modification is also adopted to extract drainage pattern specifically in alluvial plains. The lineament extracting method adopted in this study is very effective to analyze geological lineaments, and that helps estimate geological trends associated various with the tectonic events. In six sub-areas, the general trends of lineaments are characterized NW, NNW, NS-NNE, and NE directions. NW trends in Cretaceous volcanic rocks and Jurassic granite areas may represent tension joints that developed by rejuvenated end of the Early Cretaceous left-lateral strike-slip motion along the Honam Shear Zone, while NE and NS-NNE trends correspond to fault directions which are parallel to the above Shear Zone. NE and NW trends in Granitic Gneiss are parallel to the direction of schitosity, and NS-NNE and NE trends are interpreted the lineation by compressive force which acted by right-lateral strike-slip fault from late Triassic to Jurassic. And in foliated Granite, NE and NNE trends are coincided with directions of ductile foliation and Honam Shear Zone, and NW-NNW trends may be interpreted direction of another compressional foliation (Triassic to Early Jurassic) or end of the Early Cretaceous tensional joints. We interpreted NS-NNE direction lineation is related with the rejuvenated Chugaryung Fault System.

The underground cavity known as one of the reasons of ground surface settlement is a discontinuous character. Therefore, it is limited to analyze with continuum analysis. In this research, The spherical underground cavity affecting the ground surface settlement is studied with Discrete Element Method. Ground properties, depth and diameter of the spherical underground cavity are chosen as factors of the spherical underground cavity and the effect of the each factor variations on the ground surface settlement is analyzed. Relative depth to the diameter of the spherical underground cavity is also studied. The result of the research suggests the basis of underground cavity collapse prediction and standard of support.
Recently, a variety of GIS-based tools enabling to generate topographic parameters for hydrologic and hydraulic researches have been developed. However, most of GIS-based tools are usually insufficient to estimate and visualize river channel slopes especially along the river network, which can be possibly utilized for many hydraulic equations such as Manning's formula. Many existing GIS-based tools have simply averaged cell-based slopes for the other advanced level of hydrologic units as likely as the mean watershed slope, thus that the river channel slope from the simple approach resulted in the inaccurate channel slope particularly for the mountain region where the slope varies significantly along the downstream direction. The paper aims to provide several more advanced GIS-based methodologies to assess the river channel slopes along the given river network. The developed algorithms were integrated with a newly developed tool named RiverSlope, which adapted theoretical formulas of river hydraulics to calculate channel slopes. For the study area, Han stream in the Jeju island was selected, where the channel slopes have a tendency to rapidly change the upstream near the Halla mountain and sustain the mild slope adjacent to watershed outlet heading for the ocean. The paper compared the simple slope method from the Arc Hydro, with other more complicated methods. The results are discussed to decide better approaches based on the given conditions.
The stress condition mainly dominates the thermal conductivity of soils whereas governing factors such as unit weight and porosity suggested by empirical correlations are still valid. The 3D thermal network model enables evaluation of the stress-dependent thermal conductivity of particulate materials generated by discrete element method (DEM). The relationship among dominant factors is analyzed based on the coordination number and porosity determined by stress condition and thermal conductivity of pore fluid. Results show that the variation of thermal conductivity is strongly attributed to the enlargement of inter-particle contact area by loading history and pore fluid conductivity. This study highlights that the anisotropic evolution of thermal conductivity depends on the directional load and that the particle-scale mechanism mainly dictates the heat transfer in soils.
Estimation of groundwater inflow into underground opening is of critical importance for the design and construction of underground structures. Groundwater inflow into a pilot underground storage facility in China was estimated using analytical equations, numerical modeling and field measurement. The applicability of analytical and numerical methods was examined by comparing the estimated and measured results. Field geological investigation indicated that in local scale the high groundwater inflows are associated with the appearance of open joints, fractured zone or dykes induced by shear and/or tensile tectonic stresses. It was found that 8 groundwater inflow spots with high inflow rates account for about 82% of the total rate for the 9 caverns. On the prediction of the magnitude of groundwater inflow rate, it was found that could both (Finite Element Method) FEM and (Discrete Element Method) DEM perform better than analytical equations, due to the fact that in analytical equations simplified assumptions were adopted. However, on the prediction of the spatial distribution estimation of groundwater inflow, both analytical and numerical methods failed to predict at the present state. Nevertheless, numerical simulations would prevail over analytical methods to predict the distribution if more details in the simulations were taken into consideration.

Since blast-induced vibration may cause serious problem to the rock mass as well as the nearby structures, the prediction of blast-induced nitration and the stability evaluation must be performed before blasting activities. Dynamic analysis has been increased recently in order to analyze the effect of the blast-Induced vibration. Most of the previous studies, however, were based on the continuum analysis unable to consider rock joints which significantly affect the wave propagation and attenuation characteristics. They also adopted pressure corves estimated tv theoretical or empirical equations as input detonation load, thus there were very difficult to reflect the characteristics of propagating media. In this study, therefore, we suggested a dynamic distinct element analysis technique which uses velocity waveform obtained from a test blast as an input detonation load. A distinct element program, UDEC was used to consider the effect of rock joints. In order to verify the validity of proposed method, the test blast was simulated. The predicted results from the proposed method showed a good agreement with the measured vibration data from the test blast. Through the dynamic numerical modelling on the planned road tunnel and slope, we evaluated the effect of blast-induced nitration and the stability of rock slope.

A Grid-based distributed evaporation prediction model which calculates temporal and spatial evaporation with a heat balance method was developed. And, the model was considered as the integration with distributed hydrological model in near future. 'This model was programmed by fortran language and used ASCII formatted map data of DEM (Digital Elevation Model) and land cover map extracted by remote sensing data. Also, temporal variations and spatial distributions of evaporation are presented by using GIS. To verify the applicability of the model, it was applied to the Shonai river basin ($532km^2$) which has sufficient meteorological and hydrological data, Japan. The result shows that the estimated mean annual evaporation was 825.4mm, and this value is estimated as suitable things in considering rainfall and discharge data in study area.
