  • In this thesis, we propose the 3D terrain modelling method for the better understanding of the geographic information. The process of 3D terrain medelling consists of three steps. The first step is to obtain real-world data from satellite images and stored in the form of DEM(Digital Elevation Model). The second one is to extract the meaningful data from DEM data based on LOD(Level Of Detail). And the third is to construct the 3D surface by TIN(Triangulated Irregular Network) with the extracted meaingful data. The proposed dynamic TIN reconstruction algorithm locally reconstruct the existed TIN model with the additional a new point. In this way, we can construct the TIN with the reduced time and can simulated 3D terrain model in real time.

  • In discrete element modeling, 2D software has been widely used in order to gain further insights into the fundamental mechanisms with less computational time. The porosities used in 2D DEM studies should be determined with appropriate approaches based on 3D laboratory porosities. This paper summarizes the main approaches for converting porosities from 3D to 2D for DEM studies and theoretical evaluations show that none of the current approaches can be widely used in dealing with soil mechanical problems. Therefore, a parabolic equation and a criterion have been suggested for the determination of 2D porosities in this paper. Moreover, a case study has been used to validate that the 2D porosity obtained from the above suggestion to be rational with both the realistic contact force distribution in the specimen and the good agreement of the DEM simulation results of direct shear tests with the corresponding experimental data. Therefore, the parabolic equation and the criterion are suggested for the determination of 2D porosities in a wide range of polydisperse particle systems, especially in dealing with soil mechanical problems.

  • We present a technique for constructing a digital elevation model (DEM) from contours. The elevation of each ground point in DEM is computed by interpolating the heights of the two adjacent contours of the point. The technique decomposes each sub-domain between adjacent contours into a set of sub-regions. The decomposition is accomplished by constructing a medial axis of the sub-domain. Each sub-region in the decomposition is classified into a variety of terrain features like hillsides, valleys, ridges, etc. The elevations of points are interpolated with different methods according to terrain features they belong to. For a given point in hillside, an approximate gradient line passing through the point is determined and the elevation of the point is interpolated from the known elevations of the two adjacent contours along the approximate gradient line. The univariate monotone rational Hermite spline is used for the interpolation. The DEM constructed by the technique is to be used to orthorectify the high-resolution KOMPSAT3 imagery.

  • The well-known Dimension Exchange Method(DEM) to quantized loads may result in difference in assigned loads to processors as large as logn~units, in the worst case, after balancing for a hypercube of size n. In order to limit the increase of the accumulation of these differences, this paper proposes a method that limits the accumulation of the difference by redistributing an unit load (odd or even) of the same type, if possible, when there is a load distribution between two processors. We reduced the maximum difference to LCEIL logn over {2} RCEIL . The result shows the simulation experiments which show about 30% improvement in speedup compare to the DEM.

  • Various matching methods have been introduced by investigators to improve digital elevation model (DEM) accuracy of satellite imagery. This study proposed an area-based matching method according to land cover property using correlation coefficient of pixel brightness value between the two images for DEM generation from IKONOS stereo imagery. For this, matching line (where "matching line" implies straight line that is approximated to complex nonlinear epipolar geometry) is established by exterior orientation parameters to minimize search area. The matching is carried out based on this line. Land cover classes are divided off into water, urban land, forest and agricultural land. Matching size is selected using a correlation-coefficient image in the four areas. The selected sizes are $81{\times}81$ pixels window, $21{\times}21$ pixels window, $119{\times}119$ pixels window and $51{\times}51$ pixels window in the water area, urban land, forest land and agricultural land, respectively. And hence, DEM is generated from IKONOS stereo imagery using the selected matching sizes and land cover map on the four types.

  • Factors influencing shear behavior of granular material include particle size, shape, distribution, relative density, particle crushing, etc. In this study, these factors are characterized by viewpoint of shear behavior using numerical analysis based on DEM. Geometrical particle shape is represented by a combination of small circular particles and influence of particle shape on crushing is studied through relative comparisons between clump (uncrushable) and cluster (crushable) models which are modeled using DEM. Also, particle shape is quantified by the dimensionless parameters such as circularity and convexity. The results indicate that particle shape indexes have a negative association with internal friction angle. Also, internal friction angle becomes reduced and failure envelop curve becomes nonlinear due to the particle crushing. It is also found that numerical results are quite good agreement with the experimental test conducted in this study.

  • The flood caused landslide disaster each year because of climate change. And the change of topography from an earthquake makes topographical analysis impossible. This paper performed an investigation about a utilization methods and generation DEM(Digital Elevation Model) after digital aerial photographs quickly when the topographical change happens. Stereo imagery that was collected through digital aerial photographs made a generation of DEM possible. A standard deviation of generated DEM is 0.864m which is somewhat high but shows the real topography. As a result, it should be possible to generate DEM by using aerial photographs in case of the change of topography.

  • For virtual target to be displaying on real image realistically, it is essential to determine the location of the virtual object together with producing the occlusions area after registering two world. In this paper, we propose the new method to solve occlusions which happens during virtual target moves according to the simulated route on real image. For this purpose, we first construct three dimensional virtual world by DEM of experimental area and register CCD camera image on it by visual clues. Next, we also propose a method to solve the occlusion using snake and picking algorithm which can extract the three dimensional information of the position happening occlusion in the image and can use it when target moves that area. In the experiment, we proved the effectiveness of the proposed method in the environment which a partial occlusions happens.

  • In recent, flood inundation damages by hydraulic structure failures have increased drastically and thus a variety of countermeasures were needed to minimize such damages. A real-time flood inundation prediction technique is essential to protect and mitigate flood inundation damages. In the context of real time flood inundation modeling, this study aims to develop a grid based two-dimensional numerical method for flood inundation modeling using globally-available DEM data: SRTM with $90m{\times}90m$ spatial resolution. The newly-developed model guarantees computational efficiency in terms of geometric data processing by direct application of DEM for flood inundation modeling and also have good compatibility with various types of raster data when compared to a commercial model such as FLUMEN. The model, which employed the leap-frog algorithm to solve shallow water and continuity equations, can simulate inundating flow from channel to lowland and also returning flow from lowland to channel by comparing water levels between channel and lowland in real time. We applied the model to simulate the BaekSan levee break in the Nam river during a flood period from August 10 to 13, 2002. The simulation results had good agreements with the field-surveyed data in terms of inundated area and also showed physically-acceptable velocity vector maps with respect to inundating and returning flows.
