A comparative study for beams on elastic foundation models to analysis of mode-I delamination in DCB specimens

  • The aim of this research is a comprehensive review and evaluation of beam theories resting on elastic foundations that used to model mode-I delamination in multidirectional laminated composite by DCB specimen. A compliance based approach is used to calculate critical strain energy release rate (SERR). Two well-known beam theories, i.e. Euler-Bernoulli (EB) and Timoshenko beams (TB), on Winkler and Pasternak elastic foundations (WEF and PEF) are considered. In each case, a closed-form solution is presented for compliance versus crack length, effective material properties and geometrical dimensions. Effective flexural modulus ($E_{fx}$) and out-of-plane extensional stiffness ($E_z$) are used in all models instead of transversely isotropic assumption in composite laminates. Eventually, the analytical solutions are compared with experimental results available in the literature for unidirectional ($[0^{\circ}]_6$) and antisymmetric angle-ply ($[{\pm}30^{\circ}]_5$, and $[{\pm}45^{\circ}]_5$) lay-ups. TB on WEF is a simple model that predicts more accurate results for compliance and SERR in unidirectional laminates in comparison to other models. TB on PEF, in accordance with Williams (1989) assumptions, is too stiff for unidirectional DCB specimens, whereas in angle-ply DCB specimens it gives more reliable results. That it shows the effects of transverse shear deformation and root rotation on SERR value in composite DCB specimens.

  • In this paper, the characteristics of fracture in mode I loading were analyzed for adhesively bonded joints with non-uniform adhesion. The Double Cantilever Beam test was performed and mode I fracture toughness was obtained. In the case of non-uniform adhesively bonded joints, the stable crack growth sections and unstable crack growth section were shown. The fracture characteristics of each section were observed through the load-displacement curve of the DCB test and the fracture surface of the specimen. Finite Element Analysis was performed at the section based on segmented section by crack length measured through the test and using the mode I fracture toughness of each section. Through DCB test results and finite element analysis results, it was confirmed that the fracture behavior of specimens with non-uniform adhesion can be simulated.

  • 본 논문에서는 접착제로 접합된 DCB 구조체의 피로 해석을 수행하였다. 두께가 25및 40 mm인 두 모델들의 피로수명과 피로손상의 해석 결과를 비교해보면, 두께 25 mm인 모델이 두께 40 mm인 모델에 비하여 수명과 손상이 불리한 것으로 나타났으며 불규칙 피로하중에서는 'SAE transmission'에서 가장 불리한 값을 나타냈다. 또한 'SAE transmission'에서 가장 안정한 경향을 보이고 있고 상대적인 손상으로서 약 1.1에서 1.8 % 정도로 가장 작은 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구에서 얻어진 해석 결과를 접착제로 접합된 실제 복합재 구조물에 적용시켜 피로거동을 분석하고 그 기계적인 특성을 파악할 수 있다.

  • 본 논문에서는 알루미늄 폼 복합재료로 된 DCB(이중외팔보) 구조체의 파괴 거동을 시뮬레이션 해석하였다. 시뮬레이션 해석에 사용된 모델은 영국 공업규격과 ISO국제규격에 의거하여 3D모델을 설계하였다. 해석 결과 모델의 두께가 두꺼울수록 발생한 크랙의 길이가 길게 나타났고, 높은 하중이 발생하였다. 이와 같은 연구에서 얻어진 해석 결과를 통하여 알루미늄 폼 재질로 접합된 실제 복합재 구조물에 적용시켜 파괴거동을 분석하고 그 기계적인 특성을 파악할 수 있다.

Combined GPS/GLONASS Relative Receiver DCB Estimation Using the LSQ Method and Ionospheric TEC Changes over South Korea

  • The use of dual-frequency measurements from the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) enables us to observe precise ionospheric total electron content (TEC). Currently, many GNSS reference stations in South Korea provide both GPS and GLONASS data. In the present study, we estimated the grid-based TEC values and relative receiver differential code biases (DCB) from a GNSS network operated by the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute. In addition, we compared the diurnal variations in a TEC time series from solutions of the GPS only, the GLONASS only, and combined GPS/GLONASS processing. A significant difference between the GPS only TEC and combined GPS/GLONASS TEC at a specific grid point over South Korea appeared near the solar terminator. It is noted that GLONASS measurements can contribute to observing a variation in ionospheric TEC over high latitude regions.

  • Recently, many kinds of advanced composite materials have been used in various industry fields. Among them, fabric CFRP composites are being used as primary structural components in many applications because of their superior properties. However, the complexity of the fabric structure makes understanding of their failure behavior very difficult. The mechanical strength and crack propagation of plain woven carbon fiber fabric laminate composites are examined by acoustic emission(AE) method. AE signals are acquired during the tensile test and fracture tests. Thus, the relationship between AE signal and mechanical behavior curves and crack extension length are shown. Also the interlaminar fracture toughness in terms of AE characteristics are discussed in viewpoint of crack propagation behavior.

Comparison of Quantitative Interfacial Adhesion Energy Measurement Method between Copper RDL and WPR Dielectric Interface for FOWLP Applications (FOWLP 적용을 위한 Cu 재배선과 WPR 절연층 계면의 정량적 계면접착에너지 측정방법 비교 평가)

  • The quantitative interfacial adhesion energy measurement method of copper redistribution layer and WPR dielectric interface were investigated using $90^{\circ}$ peel test, 4-point bending test, double cantilever beam (DCB) measurement for FOWLP Applications. Measured interfacial adhesion energy values of all three methods were higher than $5J/m^2$, which is considered as a minimum criterion for reliable Cu/low-k integration with CMP processes without delamination. Measured energy values increase with increasing phase angle, that is, in order of DCB, 4-point bending test, and $90^{\circ}$ peel test due to increasing roughness-related shielding and plastic energy dissipation effects, which match well interfacial fracture mechanics theory. Considering adhesion specimen preparation process, phase angle, measurement accuracy and bonding energy levels, both DCB and 4-point bending test methods are recommended for quantitative adhesion energy measurement of RDL interface depending on the real application situations.

A Fracture Study on the Bonded DCB Specimen of the Mode III Type with Aluminum Foam (알루미늄 폼으로 된 Mode III 형의 접합된 DCB 시험편에 대한 파괴 연구)

  • In this study, the static analysis and experiment were carried out on DCB specimens manufactured with aluminum foam in order to investigate the fracture toughness at the adhesive joint of the structure bonded with adhesive. In case of static analysis, all specimen models were shown to have the maximum reaction force when the forced displacement proceeded as much as 5 mm. The maximum reaction forces became 0.25 kN, 0.28 kN and 0.5 kN respectively in cases of specimen thicknesses of 35 mm, 45 mm and 55 mm. Two specimens in case of static experiment were selected to verify these analysis results. The maximum reaction forces were shown when the forced displacement proceeded as much as 5 to 6 mm. The maximum reaction forces became 0.22 kN and 0.3 kN respectively in cases of specimen thicknesses of 35 mm and 45 mm. By comparing the derived results, it could be shown that there was not much difference between the data of analyses and experiments. Therefore, It is inferred that the study data can be secured with only analysis by no extra experimental procedure. It is thought that the mechanical properties at the structure bonded of DCB with the type of mode III can be analyzed systematically.

Resistance Curves of Concrete CLWL-DCB Specimens (콘크리트 CLWL-DCB 시험편의 저항곡선)

  • The resistance curves (R-curves) for 381 m crack extension of CLWL-DCB specimens had been determined. The average velocities of the crack extension measured with strain gages were 0.70 and 55 ㎜/sec. The measured rotation angle of the notch faces showed the existence of the singularity at least before 171 and 93 mm crack extensions for the 0.70 and 55 ㎜/sec crack velocities, respectively. The maximum slopes of the R-curves occurred between 25 and 89 ㎜ crack extensions for 0.70 ㎜/sec crack velocity and between 51 and 127 ㎜ crack extensions for 55 ㎜/sec crack velocity During the maximum slopes of the R-curves, the micro-crack localization can be expected, and faster crack velocity may form longer micro-cracking and micro-crack localizing zones. The fracture resistance of 0.70 ㎜/sec crack velocity reached a roughly constant maximum value of 143 N/m at 152 ㎜ crack extension, while that of 55 ㎜/sec crack velocity increased continuously to 245 N/m at 254 ㎜ crack extension and then decreased to the value of 0.70 ㎜/sec crack velocity. The R-curve of 55 ㎜/sec crack velocity was similar to that of the small size three-point bend test, and it showed that small size specimen or fast crack velocity could cause more brittle behavior.

A Study on the Activated Carbon Injection and Filtration Process for Removal of Chlorinated Organic Compound in the Incinerator Flue Gas (활성탄의 분무 여과에 의한 소각로 배가스 중의 유기 염소계 화합물의 제거 공정 연구)

  • Due to the toxicity of dioxin in the incinerator flue gas, it becomes a severe social problem. Activated carbon adsorption process is one of the methods for removing dioxin in the flue gas and was investigated its performance for removing hazardous organic compounds. Since dioxin is very hazardous material, 1,2-dichlorobenzene(o-DCB), one of the precursor material of dioxin, was used as adsorbate. The effects of air flow rate, pressure drop in the bag filter, operation temperature of bag filter, and kinds of adsorbents on the removal of o-DCB were measured and analysed. Experimental results showed that the operating temperature was recommended within the range of $140{\sim}170^{\circ}C$ considering the operating condition of incinerator. Also it was necessary to maintain the pressure drop of bag filter $120mmH_2O$ for enhancing the adsorption at the surface layer of activated carbon formed on the bag filter. The use of mixture of same amount of activated carbon and diatomite showed more than 90% removal of o-DCB and also reduced the consumption of activated carbon.
