Electrolytic power capacitors have been widely used in power conversion system such as inverter or UPS because of characteristics of large capacitance, high-voltage and low-cost. The electrolytic capacitor, which is most of the time affected by the aging effect, plays a very important role for the power-electronics system quality and reliability. Therefore it is important to diagnosis monitoring the condition of an electrolytic capacitor in real-time to predict the failure. In this paper, the on-line remote diagnosis monitoring system for UPS DC link electrolytic capacitors using low-cost single-chip zigbee communication modules is developed. To estimate the health status of the capacitor, the equivalent series resistor(ESR) of the component has to be determined. The capacitor ESR is estimated by using RMS computation using BPF modeling of DC link ripple voltage/current. Zigbee-based hardware experimental results show that the proposed remote capacitor diagnosis monitoring system can be applied to UPS successfully.
This paper presents a novel three-phase current-fed Pulse Width Modulation converter with switched capacitor type resonant DC link commutation circuit operating PWM pattern strategy under a design consideration of low-pass filter, which can operate on the basis of the principle of zero current soft switching commutation. In the first place, the steady state operating principle of this converter with a new resonant DC link snubber circuit is described in connection with the equivalent operation circuit, together with the practical design procedure of the switched-capacitor type resonant DC link circuit is discussed from a theoretical viewpoint on the basis of a design example for high-power applications. The actively delayed time correction method to compensate distorted currents due to a relatively long resonant commutation time is newly implemented in the open loop control scheme so as to acquire the new optimum PWM pattern. Finally, the experiment of set-up in laboratory system of this converter is concretely demonstrated herein to confirm a zero current soft-switching commutation of this converter. The comparative evaluations between current -fed hard switching PWM and soft-switching PWM converters are carried out from a viewpoint of their PWM converter characteristics.
Due to the advantage of reducing the voltage applied to the switch semiconductor, the input series and output parallel combination is widely used in systems with high input voltage and large output current. On the other hand, the LLC converter is widely used as a high-efficiency power converter, and when connected by ISOP combination, there is a possibility that input voltage imbalance may occur due to a mismatch of passive devices. To avoid damaging the switching device, this study analyzed the DC-link voltage imbalance of a high-capacity supply using an ISOP LLC converter. In addition, the case where DC-link unbalance control was applied and the case not applied was analyzed respectively. Based on this analysis, an initial start-up algorithm was proposed to prevent input power semiconductor device damage due to DC-link over-voltage. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm has been verified through simulations and experiments.
This paper presents a high-efficient and cost effective three-phase AC/DC-DC/AC power conversion system with a single two-switch type active Auxiliary Resonant DC Link (ARDCL) snubber circuit, which can minimize the total power dissipation. The active ARDCL snubber circuit is proposed in this paper and its unique features are described. Its operation principle in steady-state is discussed for the three phase AC/DC-DC/AC converter, which is composed of PWM rectifier as power factor correction (PFC) converter, sinewave PWM inverter. In the presented power converter system not only three-phase AC/DC PWM rectifier but also three-phase DC/AC inverter can achieve the stable ZVS commutation for all the power semiconductor devices. It is proved that the proposed three-phase AC/DC-DC/AC converter system is more effective and acceptable than the previous from the cost viewpoint and high efficient consideration. In addition, the proposed two-switch type active auxiliary ARDCL snubber circuit can reduce the peak value of the resonant inductor injection current in order to maximize total system actual efficiency by using the improved DSP based control scheme. Moreover the proposed active auxiliary two-switch ARDCL snubber circuit has the merit so that there is no need to use any sensing devices to detect the voltage and current in the ARDCL sunbber circuit for realizing soft-switching operation. This three-phase AC/DC-DC/AC converter system developed for UPS can achieve the 1.8% higher efficiency and 20dB lower conduction noise than those of the conventional three-phase hard-switching PWM AC/DC-DC/AC converter system. It is proved that actual efficiency of the proposed three-phase AC/DC-DC/AC converter system operating under a condition of soft switching is 88.7% under 10kw output power.

This paper presents a new configuration for a three-phase multilevel voltage source inverter. The main bridge is built from a classical three-phase two-level inverter and three bidirectional switches. A variable DC-link employing two unequal DC voltage supplies and four switches is connected to the main circuit in such a way that the proposed inverter produces four levels in the output voltage waveform. In order to obtain the desired switching gate signals, the fundamental frequency staircase modulation technique is successfully implemented. Furthermore, the proposed structure is extended and compared with other types of multilevel inverter topologies. The comparison shows that the proposed inverter requires a smaller number of power components. For a given number of voltage steps N, the proposed inverter requires N/2 DC voltage supplies and N+12 switches connected with N+7 gate driver circuits, while diode clamped or flying capacitor inverters require N-1 DC voltage supplies and 6(N-1) switches connected with 6(N-1) gate driver circuits. A prototype of the introduced configuration has been manufactured and the obtained simulation and experimental results ensure the feasibility of the proposed topology and the validity of the implemented modulation technique.
The powers used in the robot drive motor system are mostly DC sources such as batteries. Even AC powers in some systems are generated from DC sources by the inverter. It is can be forecasted that the DC-link communications will be widely used invarious industrial application. In this paper a novel BLDC motor drive system by using DC-link communications is proposed. The characteristic of this system is the communication only needs 2 DC lines. There are not additional lines to translate the reference signals and the reliability of the system is enhanced especially in some badly circumstance. The number of lines can be least when applied in the multi motor control system and the slip ring design can be simplified when applied as rotation machine. The reasonableness of proposed motor system is clarified by the PSIM simulation and the hardware prototype.
This paper describes the usefulness of new control method in HVDC link system which suffers from severe condition of weak ac system. The proposed control scheme is used for the positive feedback control which directly controlls dc current at dc link system. The object of this paper is to improve the transient response of HVDC link system in disturbances such as faults. To achieve this objective, digital time-domain simulations are employed by the Electro Magnetic Transient Program for DC system(EMTDC).
A new quasi-resonant do link inverter is suggested, which can operate at the constant peak do link voltage irrespective of the magnitude of load current. The inverter is analyzed by using the topological analogy between the proposed inverter and the resonant DC/DC converter. Based on the analysis, an appropriate current controller is developed, which results in low current stress to the resonant capacitor and also enjoys the inherent capability of the current initialization of resonant inductor. For the purpose of confirming the inverter characteristics, some simulation results are presented.
Recently, more power facilities are needed to cope with the increasing electric demand. However, the additional construction of generators, transmission and distribution installations is not easy because of environmental problems and citizen's complaints. Under this circumstance, a microgrid system with distributed renewable resources emerges as an alternative of the traditional power systems. Moreover, the configuration of power system changes with more DC loads and more DC installations. This paper is written to introduce an idea of a genetic algorithm-based solution to determine the optimal capacity of the distributed generators depending on the types of system configuration: AC-link, DC-link and Hybrid-link types. In this paper, photovoltaic, wind turbine, energy storage system and diesel generator are considered as distributed generators and the feasibility of the proposed algorithm is verified by comparing the calculated capacity of each distributed resource with HOMER simulation results for 3 types of system configuration.
This paper proposes a seamless MPPT operation mode transfer method of photovoltaic system. The photovoltaic system consists of a DC-DC boost converter, a DC-Link, and a 3-level neutral point clamp (NPC) type inverter. The PV voltage fluctuates due to the output characteristics of the solar pane1 depending on the irradiation amount and the temperature. The photovoltaic system requires seamless MPPT mode transfer method that the discontinuity does not occur in order to supply the stable power to system without affecting the fluctuation of the PV voltage. MPPT operation is divided into two modes by the voltage reference. Under the condition that the PV voltage is below 650V, the DC-DC boost converter performs MPPT through duty control based on perturb & observe (P&O) method, and the inverter conducts DC-link voltage and grid current controls in synchronous reference frame. On the other hand, when the PV voltage exceeds above 650V, inverter performs MPPT in accordance with the variation of DC-link voltage control while the converter stops operating. Two MPPT operation modes is smoothly transferred through the proposed method that DC-link voltage or grid current commands are appropriately adjusted from the certain criteria. The feasibility of the MPPT operation mode transfer method is verified using a 10kW solar photovoltaic system, experimental results have good performances that the fluctuation of PV current is reduced to 100%.
