  • Low voltage direct current (LVDC) distribution system is a suitable techno-economic candidate which can create an innovative solution for distribution network development with respect to rural electrification. This research focuses on the use of LVDC distribution system to replace some of KEPCO's existing traditional medium voltage alternating current (MVAC) distribution network for rural electrification in South Korea. Considering the technical and economic risks and benefits involved in such project, a comparative techno-economic analysis on the LVDC and the MVAC distribution networks is conducted using economic assessment method such as the net present value (NPV) on a discounted cash flow (DCF) basis as well as the sensitivity analysis technique. Each would play a role in an economic performance indicator and a measure of uncertainty and risk involved in the project. In this work, a simulation model and a computational tool are concurrently developed and employed to aid the techno-economic analysis, evaluation, and estimation of the various systems efficiency and/or performance.

  • This paper describes a MEMS-based micro-fluxgate magnetic sensing element using Ni$\_$0.8/Fe$\_$0.2/ film formed by electroplating. The micro-fluxgate magnetic sensor composed of a thin film magnetic core and micro-structure solenoids for the pick-up and the excitation coils, is developed by using MEMS technologies in order to take advantage of low-cost, small size and lower power consumption in the fabrication. A copper with 20${\mu}$m width and 3${\mu}$m thickness is electroplated on Cr (300${\AA}$) / Au (1500${\AA}$) films for the pick-up (42turn) and the excitation (24turn) coils. In order to improve the sensitivity of the sensing element, we designed the magnetic core into a rectangular-ring shape to reduce the magnetic flux leakage. An electroplated permalloy film with the thickness of 3${\mu}$m is obtained under 2000 gauss to induce magnetic anisotropy. The magnetic core has the high DC effective permeability of ~1,100 and coercive field of ~0.1 Oe. The fabricated sensing element using rectangular-ring shaped magnetic film has the sensitivity of about 150 V/T at the excitation frequency of 2 MHz and the excitation voltage of 4.4 V$\_$p p/. The power consumption is estimated to be 50mW.

  • A non-instrumental immunochromatographic (ICG) strip-test and direct competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (DC-ELISA) for aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) determination were developed and optimized. The detection limits of ICG strip-test and DC-ELISA were 0.5 and 0.004 ng/mL, respectively, and these methods possessed a cross-reaction to aflatoxins. The results of spiked samples by both methods were coincided with the amount spiked AFB1 and the comparative analyses of 172 real samples by 2 immunoassays and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) showed a good agreement. Especially, the ICG strip-test is easier to perform and quicker, but less sensitivity than DC-ELISA. Both methods could analyze a high sample throughput with short time, but the sample throughput of ICG strip-test was better. Therefore, the ICG strip-test can be used as a simple, easy, non-instrumental, and fast screening technique for AFB1 determination.

  • Although application of electrical methods in Korea began with observation of self potentials before World War II, the methods were developed slowly by the beginning of 1980's when a major burst of development activity took place. DC resistivity methods are applied in Korea more to geotechnical problems rather than to environmental ones unlike other developed countries. As with every other branch of technology, the evolving speed of the silicon chip and of streaming data to hard disk has revolutionized data collection and noise reduction processing. The last two decades saw major advances in data collection, processing, and interpretation of electrical data. Development of smooth-model two-dimensional (2D) resistivity inversion is one of the most visible changes to geophysical interpretation of the last 40 years and is now routinely applied to apparent resistivity data. The ability to represent resistivities in section rather than pseudosection view has revolutionized interpretation. Although calculation of sensitivities for general electromagnetic problems require numerous forward modelings, DC resistivity methods can enjoy computational efficiencies if sources and receivers occupy the same position, and previously intractable 3D inversion is now becoming available.

  • In this paper, the baseband filter is proposed in order to maintain a constant sensitivity regardless of distances for 77 GHz automotive radar system. Using existing DCOC loop circuit can remove DC offset and also cancel differences of received power depending on the distance. Measured results show that the maximum gain is 51 dB and high pass cutoff frequency can be tuned from 5 kHz to 15 kHz. The slope of high pass filter can be tuned from -10 to -40 dB/decade for the distance compensation. The measured NF and IIP3 are 26 dB and +4.5 dBm with 4.3 mA at 1.0 V supply voltage, respectively. The fabricated die size $500{\mu}m{\times}1,050{\mu}m$ excluding the in/out pads.

  • This study deals with the crystal growth and the optical characteristics of CdS thin films activatedby silver. CdS:Ag thin films were deposited by using an electron beam evaporation(EBE) technique in vacuumof 1.5X 10-'torr, voltage of 4 kV, current of 2.5 mA and substrate temperature of 250$^{\circ}$C CdS:Ag photoconductivefilms prepared by EBE method show high photoconductivity after annealing at about 550"c for 0.5 h in air andAr gas.The grain size of CdS:Ag thin films annealed in Ar atmosphere (1 atm) was grown over 1 ym and the thicknessof the films is 4-5 pm. The analysis of X-ray diffraction patterns shows that the crystal structures are hexagonal. The diffraction line by (00.2) plane can only be observed, indicating that c-axis of hexagonal grows preferentiallyperpendicular to the substrate. The profiles of photoluminescence spectra of CdS:Ag films show Gaussian typecurves at room temperature, the maximum peak spectral sensitivity of CdS:Ag is located at the wavelength of520 nm.We annealed CdS:Ag thin films in air and Ar vapor in order to make the CdS photoconductors having theintensive photocurrent, the broad distribution of the photocurrent spectrum and the large value of the ratioof the photocurrent (pc) to the dark current(dc). We found that CdS:Ag thin films annealed in air atmospherewas the best one.air atmosphere was the best one.

  • Objectives: In this study, we evaluated the influence of different radiant exposures provided by single-peak and polywave light-curing units (LCUs) on the degree of conversion (DC) and the mechanical properties of resin cements. Materials and Methods: Six experimental groups were established for each cement (RelyX ARC, 3M ESPE; LuxaCore Dual, Ivoclar Vivadent; Variolink, DMG), according to the different radiant exposures (5, 10, and $20J/cm^2$) and two LCUs (single-peak and polywave). The specimens were made (7 mm in length ${\times}$ 2 mm in width ${\times}$ 1 mm in height) using silicone molds. After 24 hours of preparation, DC measurement was performed using Fourier transform infrared spectrometry. The same specimens were used for the evaluation of mechanical properties (flexural strength, FS; elastic modulus, E) by a three-point bending test. Data were assessed for normality, after which two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post hoc Tukey's test were performed. Results: No properties of the Variolink cement were influenced by any of the considered experimental conditions. In the case of the RelyX ARC cement, DC was higher when polywave LCU was used; FS and E were not influenced by the conditions evaluated. The LuxaCore cement showed greater sensitivity to the different protocols. Conclusions: On the basis of these results, both the spectrum of light emitted and the radiant exposure used could affect the properties of resin cements. However, the influence was material-dependent.

  • Radio frequency (RF) energy harvesting technology have become a reliable and promising alternative to extend the lifetime of power-constrained wireless networks by eliminating the need for batteries. This emerging technology enables the low-power wireless devices to be self-sustaining and eco-friendly by scavenging RF energy from ambient environment or dedicated energy sources. These attributes make RF energy harvesting technology feasible and attractive to an extended range of applications. However, despite being the most reliable energy harvesting technology, there are several challenges (especially power conversion efficiency, output DC voltage and sensitivity) poised for the implementation of RF energy harvesting systems. In this article, a detailed literature on RF energy harvesting technology has been surveyed to provide guidance for RF energy harvesters design. Since signal strength of the received RF power is limited and weak, high efficiency state-of-the-art RF energy harvesters are required to design for providing sufficient DC supply voltage to wireless networks. Therefore, various designs and their trade-offs with comprehensive analysis for RF energy harvesters have been discussed. This paper can serve as a good reference for the researchers to catch new research topics in the field of RF energy harvesting.

  • In recent years, if we order food by easily accessing the online market with our smartphone, we can receive the product in a fresh state at dawn the next day. Cold chain is an industry that can create high added value because it has both the characteristics of general logistics and sensitivity to temperature. Based on the electrical specifications derived from the reefer container capacity requirement investigation, we proved that power supply to up to 33 reefer containers can be made by using three additional auxiliary power supplies which are applied for freight trains in Korea. In this paper, we conducted a research on a design of power supply system for freight train reefer container based on simulation as a basic research necessary for low-temperature distribution and cold chain construction based on the reefer container railroad. Consequently, the simulation was conducted using the three-phase inverter diagram in PSIM and the SVPWM (3-harmonic injection method) control technique, and it was verified that the required power voltage was satisfied with 622Vdc, which is lower than the input voltage of general SPWM of 718Vdc. The details of this paper could be used as a foundational study for constructing cold chains based on a reefer container dedicated to freight trains in the future.

  • Measurement of magnetic signals generated from electric activity of myocardium provides useful information for the functional diagnosis of heart diseases. Key technical component of the magnetocardiography (MCG) technology is SQUID. To measure MCG signals with high signal-to-noise ratio, sensitive SQUID magnetic field sensors are needed. Present magnetic field sensors based on Nb SQUIDs have field sensitivity good enough to measure most of MCG signals. However, for accurate measurement of fine signal pattern or detection of local atrial fibrillation signals, we may need higher field sensitivity. In addition to field sensitivity, economic aspect of the SQUID system is also important. To simplify the SQUID readout electronics, the output voltage or flux-to-voltage transfer of SQUID should be large enough so that direct measurement of SQUID output can be done using room-temperature preamplifiers. Double relaxation oscillation SQUID (DROS), having about 10 times larger flux-to-voltage transfers than those of DC-SQUIDs, was shown to be a good choice to make the electronics compact. For effective cancellation of external noise inside a thin economic shielded room, first-order axial gradiometer with high balance, simple structure and long-baseline is needed. We developed a technology to make the axial gradiometer compact using direct bonding of superconductive wires between pickup coil and input coil. Conventional insert has mechanical support to hold the gradiometer array, and the dewar neck has equal diameter with the dewar bottom. Boiling of the liquid He can generate mechanical vibrations in the gradiometer array due to mechanical connection structure. Elimination of the mechanical support, and direct mounting of the gradiometer array into the dewar bottom can reduce the dewar neck diameter, resulting in the reduction of liquid He consumption.
