  • This paper describes the operational analysis results of the bipolar DC distribution system coupled with the distributed generators. The energy management for AC/DC power trade and the operational principle of distributed generators and energy storages were first analyzed by computer simulation with PSCAD/EMTDC software. After then a hardware simulator for the bipolar DC distribution system was built, which is composed of the grid-tied three-level inverter, battery storage, super-capacitor storage, and the voltage balancer. Various experiments with the hardware simulator were carried out to verify the operation of bipolar DC distribution system. The developed simulator has an upper-level controller which operates in connection with the controllers for each distributed generator and the battery energy storage based on CAN communication. The developed hardware simulator are possible to use in designing the bipolar DC distribution system and analyzing its performance experimentally.

  • At the end of the 19th century, a battle known as the War of the Currents was fought over how electricity would be generated, delivered, and utilized. In this day and age, there has been a growing interest in Green Growth policies as countermeasures against global warming. As a result of these policies, the use of new and renewable energy needed a power converter to replace fossil fuels has expanded. To reduce power consumption through high efficiency of conversion, Low Voltage DC (LVDC) distribution systems are suggested as an alternative. In a DC distribution system, DC loads are very efficient due to decrease the stages of power conversion. If the LVDC distribution system is adopted, not only DC load but also existing AC loads should be connected with LVDC system. Thus, the modeling of two loads is needed to analyze the DC distribution system. This paper, especially, is focused on the modeling of resistive load and electronic load including power electronic converters using ElectroMagnetic Transient Program (EMTP) software.

  • Internet Data Centers (IDCs), which are resulted by the rapid progress of Information Technology industry, consist of high-density digital loads with internet server systems. Introduction of DC distribution system may simplify the conventional electric power conversion system, and may result in the improvement of electric power efficiency. However, this conjecture has never been tested under Korean IDC environment. In this study, electric power efficiency of DC distribution system from KT Namsuwon IDC is contrasted with that of conventional AC distribution system from KT Bundang IDC. DC 48[V] based distribution system showed 13.2[%] higher efficiency than the conventional AC based distribution system. The further analysis with the assumption of DC 380[V] suggests efficiency improvement over 25[%] can be achieved.

  • This paper proposes residential hybrid distribution system that can supply AC power and DC power to AC load and DC load at the same time. This hybrid distribution system consists of three parts: bidirectional inverter, step-up converter and step-down converter. Also that is used to supply voltage to home application is classified of AC load and DC load as load characteristics. The performance of proposed hybrid distribution system is validated through the hardware implementation and the experimental results.

  • Recently, new Low Voltage DC (LVDC) power distribution systems have been constantly researched as uses of DC in end-user equipment are increased. As in conventional AC distribution system, High Impedance Fault (HIF) which may cause a failure of protective relay can occur in LVDC distribution system as well. It, however, is hard to be detected since change in magnitude of current due to the fault is too small to detect the fault by the protective relay using overcurrent element. In order to solve the problem, this paper presents an algorithm for detecting HIF using accumulated energy in LVDC distribution system. Wavelet Singular Value Decomposition (WSVD) is used to extract abnormal high frequency components from fault current and accumulated energy of high frequency components is considered as the element to detect the fault. LVDC distribution system including AC/DC and DC/DC converter is modeled to verify the proposed algorithm using ElectroMagnetic Transient Program (EMTP) software. Simulation results considering various conditions show that the proposed algorithm can be utilized to effectively detect HIF.

  • The importance of DC breakers as key protection equipment is increasing in accordance with growing concerns on MVDC distribution network systems without DC/AC conversion. Different from the situation in AC systems, no natural zero-crossing point exists in DC systems. Thus, DC breaker technology is more difficult than AC breaker technology. The solutions for DC breakers can be divided into three types: mechanical, power electronics, and hybrid. In this study, the operating principles of several topologies of hybrid circuit breakers and that of the proposed DC breaker are analyzed and simulated by sorting two types. The breakers are compared in terms of the type and number of semiconductors, volume, power loss, auxiliary components, isolation, and other aspects. The advantages and disadvantages of the breakers are also analyzed.

  • At the end of the 19th century, Edison's DC power system and Tesla's AC power system was debated in power market. Finally, AC system became the primary system of the power market because both step-up and step-down of voltage by using transformer and long-distance power transmission are easily possible. However, nowadays the power market takes some action for introducing DC system. Both domestic and foreign researchers are conducting the study on the DC system as well. Some researchers have conducted the studies on power quality and economic evaluation of the DC distribution system but DC distribution system is still controversial in terms of the effectiveness and reliability. In this paper, we calculate the reliability indices of the Low Voltage Direct Current(LVDC) distribution system considering arrangement of power electronics, layout of the distribution system, and distance between load points.

  • DC-based power system is paid attention as interests in energy efficiency and power quality are increased. However, standardization and researches for commercializing Low Voltage DC(LVDC) distribution system are still insufficient. Protection system, which is closely related with reliability, power quality, safety, and life expectancy of components in power system, is also included. This paper therefore analyzes fault response characteristics in LVDC distribution system as a preliminary study on protection schemes. A stepwise analysis on fault current from both AC/DC converter and DC/DC converter is performed and related expressions are derived. And then, modeling and simulation with various conditions are conducted by using ElectroMagnetic Transients Program (EMTP) to verify analysis results. Based on research results in the paper, direction for development of protection schemes for LVDC distribution system is suggested.

  • In general, for a large power system like DC distribution system for buildings, several power converters are modularized for parallel operation. However, in parallel operation, inconsistency of parameters in each module causes circulating current in the whole system. Circulating current is directly related to loss, and, therefore, it is most important for the safety of the power system to supply the suitable current to each module. This paper proposes a control method to reduce circulating current caused during parallel operation. Accordingly, the validity of parallel operation system including response characteristics and normal state was verified by simulation and experiment result.

  • Analysis methods in the power system are static analysis, dynamic analysis and online analysis, offline analysis. The static analysis is used for the existing power system analysis method and the static analysis is mainly used for PSS / E. However, in the real system where the value changes in real time which we are using, dynamic analysis is required which can be analyzed in real time for accurate analysis. Therefore, attention is focused on EMS (Energy Management System) and importance is increasing. Among the various EMS systems, we will cover state estimation, which is a static on-line analysis that can receive and interpret data from the acquisition point in real time. DC systems are spreading in various fields such as DC load, DC distribution, renewable energy. As such, much attention and attention are focused on the DC system. In this paper, we have studied the feasibility through the case study and the interpretation of the state estimation that can be applied to the DC system.
