  • This study was investigated to the assessment of organic pollution using attached diatom assemblages in the Shinchon stream on April, June, September and December 1999. Diatoms were identified total 74 taxa which composed of 68 species, 4 varieties and 2 unidentified species. The Centrales were 5 taxa and Pennales were 69 taxa. Dominant species were Navicula subminuscula, Navicula saprophila and Nitzschia palea which were saprophilous taxa to organic pollution. N. palea was dominant species at st. $1{\sim}3$ on April, June and September and N. subminuscula was recorded as dominant species at st. 4 on June, September and December. N. saprophila was dominated only at station 4 on April. DAIpo values were ranged $0.4{\sim}15.3$ at all stations from April to December and the water qualities were polysaprobic states except to ${\alpha}-mesosaprobic$ state at st. 1 on June. If Navicula sp. was identified as saprophilous taxa, DAIpo value of this station will be 3.5 and water quality of the station will be polysaprobic state. This stream was assessed the water qualities of polysaprobic states.

  • This research was to examine the physiochemical factors and the attached diatoms of ecological wetland in Paju from August 2010 to May 2011. As a result of physicohemical water quality assessment, the water temperature did not fluctuate much due to ample riparian vegetation and aquatic plants growing at the site. Due to the effect of Han River Estuary, site 4, 5 and 6 had high electricity conductivity. The BOD concentration was high at site 2, 3, and 4 caused by decrease in water quantity and inflow of polluted water. At all sites, T-N and T-P concentrations ranged from eutrophic to hypertrophic status. At the downstream, the T-N and T-P concentrations decreased by inhabiting aquatic plant. Total of 98 taxa of attached diatoms were found. As for dominant taxa, Achnanthes convergens, A. minutissima, Gomphonema gracile, G. parvulum, Melosira varians, Navicula seminulum, N. minima, N. pseudolanceolata, Nitzschia amphibia, N. palea, Surirella minuta and Synedra ulna var. fragilariodes appeared. The result of biological assessment of water quality rated the sites B(suboptimal)~D(poor) during seasons of low water temperature, Fall and Winter, with DAIpo ranging 24.1~68.2 and TDI of 48.4~85.6. During Spring and Summer, all sites were rated D(poor) with DAIpo lower than or equal to 40, and TDI above or equal to 70. The biological assessment of water quality at the research site showed inferior TDI result compared to that of DAIpo.

  • The research assessed water quality using physico-chemical factors, trophic status index and attached diatom index in 10 reservoirs located in Chungcheongnam-do from October 2007 to June 2008. The physico-chemical water quality assessments revealed that Dangjin-gun (St. 1~5), which displayed a high chemical oxygen demand (V and VI) and chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ (Eutrophic-Hypereutrophic), was more polluted than Yesan and Cheongyang-gun. The sample were also hypereutrophic [trophic status index (TSI) 74.6] and ${\beta}$-mesosaprobic [diatom assemblage index to the organic water pollution (DAIpo) 44.47]. Yesan and Cheongyang-gun. Which were mid-level in their pollution status, were eutrophic (TSI 56.9) and ${\alpha}$-oligosaprobic (DAIpo 60.11). TSI correlated strongly with the attached diatom index (of DAIpo 0.60~0.62, and trophic diatom index of 0.72~0.74). Hence, the attached diatom index can be used with the trophic status assessment of lakes using TSI, and lake trophic status index (LTSI).

  • This research has studied the physicochemical environmental factors and communities of epilithic diatom and phytoplanktons at Hongcheon river from December 2011 to September 2012. In case of TN, the result was hypertrophic, and for TP, it ranged from mesotrophic to eutrophic. As for BOD, Hongcheon river was rated level II or better, according to the water quality level; values were found to be below 3mg/L at most sites. Total of 83 and 114 taxa of epilithic diatom and phytoplanktons respectively, were found during the research. When assessed using the TSI, it ranged from oligomesotrophic to eutrophic. In case of DAIpo, it ranged from 64.1 to 99.5, and TDI ranged from 51.5 to74.0. These results signify good water quality, level B or better, for Hongcheon river. P-IBI was rated moderate to low, which showed higher pollution than other indices. Among the biological water quality measures analyzed in the Hongcheon river study, DAIpo best matches TDI and BOD, while TDI showed greater pollution. Therefore, P-IBI appears to be inappropriate when assessing the domestic small rivers and lakes.

  • Jinwi Stream is considerably polluted. The urban development in a Jinwi Stream basin can make state of aquatic ecosystem worse. However, researches for aquatic ecosystems in Jinwi Stream are insufficient. In this study, biotic indices of periphytic diatoms (DAIpo and TDI), benthic macroinvertebrates (EPT, KSI and ESB) and fish (IBI) were compared with the annual water quality data. Benthic macroinvertebrates indices showed highly significant correlations with concentrations of organic materials and nutrients, while DAIpo, TDI and IBI showed low correlations with them. In particular, ESB can be considered as an useful indicator that reflects the degree of diversity and abundance of biotic community as well as water quality. In polluted and disturbed streams as Jinwi Stream, DAIpo, TDI and IBI appeared to be not available for evaluating and discriminating the water quality, although they have been known as good indices in general streams.

  • The research was to get a biological assessment on Bokha stream and Dal stream, using the physicochemical factors and the epilithic diatom from June, 2008 to March, 2009. As a result, Bokha stream showed high consistency of total phosphorus ($0.041{\sim}0.886\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$), and total nitrogen ($0.336{\sim}10.532\;mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$). Also, the concentration of BOD showed most of the sites polluted as $2{\sim}5\;mg\cdot}L^{-1}$ except for the upstream sites. However, excluding downstream sites and other few sites, Dal stream had very clean water quality having total phosphorus less than $0.06\;mg\cdot}L^{-1}$, and total nitrogen less than $2.0\;mg\cdot}L^{-1}$. Out of the 12 total sites, 98 taxa of epilithic diatoms appeared: 67 taxa from Bokha stream, and 78 taxa from Dal stream. The results of the water quality assessment showed that, Bokha stream, having TDI level over 80, was mostly $\alpha$-mesosaprobic, which indicates a severe pollution. On the other hand, Dal stream, having TDI level below 50, was examined to be xenosaprobic and $\alpha$-oligosaprobic, which indicates a clean water quality. The correlation between DAIpo and TDI measured to be high in correlation coefficent (0.83) from the result of correlation analysis. When the water quality is good, there is an inclination of getting high correlation between chemical and biological water quality assessment results. TDI, which uses numerous taxa of diatoms, showed more stability than DAIpo, which uses less amount of taxa of diatoms to get its result.

  • The urbanization is altering the hydrology, water quality, channel form of waterway and changing the composition of biological communities in the aquatic ecosystem. Recently, towns grew bigger by the drift of large numbers of people and the medium and small leather and dyeing industries around the Pocheon and Youngpyeong streams. The discharges of sewage were increased by them. The UII (urban intensity index) was 85 (st. P-3) and 91 (st. P-6) in the Pocheon stream and about 20 in the Youngpyeong stream. A total 141 taxa of epilithic diatoms which were composed of 2 order, 8 family, 30 genera. Dominant species were Navicula saprophila, N. subminuscula, Nitzschia palea, Gomphonema pseudoaugur in the Pocheon stream and Achnanthes alteragracillima, A. convergens, A. minutissima, N. minima, N. fonticola, N. frustulum and Cymbella minuta var. silesiaca in the Youngpyeong stream. It Showed the different composition of dominant species by the urbanization near two streams. In the relationships between UII and environmental factors such as EC, BOD, COD, TN, TP and DAIpo, UII showed the high relations $(r^2>0.8)$. It was the difference of organic pollution according to urbanization. It therefore, was higher the relative abundance and more the numbers of saprophilous taxa in the Pocheon stream than the Youngpyeong stream. The water quality of two streams by biological indicators(DAIpo) was polysaprobic state(st. P-3, P-4, P-5) in the Pocheon stream and was oligosaprobic (Y-1), mesosaprobic (Y-2, 3) and polysaprobic state (Y-4) in the Youngpyeong stream during the investigation periods.

  • The purpose of this study was to assess biological river water quality by using epilithic diatoms at 40 selected sites in Geum, Youngsan, and Seomjin River systems. The sampling and analyses were performed during three seasons including January, April and June in 2005. Various water quality parameters also were analyzed. We attempted to classify the water quality condition by epilithic diatom indices (DAIpo and TDI) with the results of corresponding analyses of various chemical water quality parameters. A five class system was delivered to describe the water quality condition ranged from "very good" to "very poor." We also proposed a way of classifying water quality condition by combining two diatom indices of DAIpo and TDI. Our results showed that biomass of epilithic diatoms varied not only seasonally but spatially; it was not likely that winter diatoms represent average water quality condition, due to high concentration of nutrients. Water quality status assessed by diatom indices was generally worse than that assessed by BOD, indicating that BOD standard likely underestimates the biological condition of the water body. Importantly, nutrient-based diatom index (TDI) generally overestimated organic matter-based index (DAIpo) at most study sites, indicating that diatoms in studied rivers were likely more affected by nutrients than organic matter. Thus, management strategy to improve river water quality in Korea is suggested to emphasize more on the nutrients than organic matters.

  • The Shihwa constructed wetland was established for the treatment of severely poluted water from Banwoul, Donghwa and Samhwa streams. This study was focused on investigating the structure of epiphytic diatom communities on reed (Phragmites communis) planting area at Banwoul high wetland (3 stations) and low wetland (3 stations) from March to October 2005. The concentration of T-N of inlet stations from the streams were decreased by flowed through the wetland, but the concentration of T-P were increased at outflow part. Epiphytic diatoms on the reed were a total 109 taxa which were composed of 103 species, 5 varieties, 1 unidentified species. The standing crops were rapidly decreasing tendency from spring to autumn but chlorophyll-a concentration were showed a very irregulated changes. Dominant species were 6 taxa which were Achnanthes minutissima in the early investigation, and were changed to the genus Navicula and the genus Nitzschia in the summer. DAIpo were ranged the values of $20.2{\sim}51$, which were mesosaprobic states at the high wetland and ranged the values of $12.4{\sim}52$, which were polysaprobic to mesosaprobic states at the low wetland. TDI were ranged the values of $28.8{\sim}94.5$, which were oligotrophic to eutrophic state at the high wetland and ranged the values of $33.3{\sim}89.7$ which were mesotrophic to eutrophic states at the low wetland. The healthy assessment (DAIpo and TDI) of water ecosystem were showed clean-bad from spring to autumn. These epiphytic diatom communities were determinated by the biological factor such as the growth of reed and the physical factors such as water temperature, light penetration and SS and so on.
