  • Dissolved air flotation (DAF) process is generally considered more effective than sedimentation process in raw water containing algae, humus materials, and low density particles. This study presents the treatment efficiencies by the coagulation and flocculation conditions at a drinking water treatment plant using a laboratory tester and the full scale DAF pump system. The full scale DAF pump system (F-DAF) in this study had a capacity of 5,000 $m^3$/d and a hydraulic surface loading of 10 m/hr. F-DAF in D drinking water treatment plant was continuously operated to determine the operational performance and pretreatment (mixing and coagulation) conditions. Results in the laboratory experiment showed that the optimum coagulant (PSO-M) doses required to 2.7~4.5 mL/$m^3$/NTU with raw water turbidity from 13.8 NTU to 56.3 NTU. F-DAF in the optimum coagulant dosage could be operated in effluent turbidity of 1 NTU or below for a month.

  • To remove phosphorus from the effluent of public wastewater treatment facilities, hundreds of enhanced phosphorus treatment processes have been introduced nationwide. However, these processes have a few problems including excessive maintenance cost and sludge production caused by inappropriate coagulant injection. Therefore, the optimal decision of coagulant dosage and automatic control of coagulant injection are essential. To overcome the drawbacks of conventional phosphorus removal processes, the integrated sedimentation and dissolved air flotation(SeDAF) process has been developed and a demonstration plant(capacity: 100 ㎥/d) has also been installed. In this study, various jar-tests(sedimentation and / or sedimentation·flotation) and multiple regression analyses have been performed. Particularly, we have highlighted the decision-making algorithms of optimal coagulant dosage to improve the applicability of the SeDAF process. As a result, the sedimentation jar-test could be a simple and reliable method for the decision of appropriate coagulant dosage in field condition of the SeDAF process. And, we have found that the SeDAF process can save 30 - 40% of coagulant dosage compared with conventional sedimentation processes to achieve total phosphorus (T-P) concentration below 0.2 mg/L of treated water, and it can also reduce same portion of sludge production.

  • The regulations of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) have been steadily strengthened in ship emissions. Accordingly, there is a growing need for development of related technologies for the removal of contaminants that may occur during the treatment of SOx and NOx using a wet scrubber. However, this system also leads to wastewater production when the exhaust gas is scrubbed. In this research, we evaluated the performance of an ion selective resin process in accordance with scrubber wastewater discharge regulations, specifically nitrate discharge, by the IMO. Accelerated real and synthetic wastewater of wet scrubbers, contained high amounts of TDS with high nitrate, is used as feed water in lab scale systems. Furthermore, a pilot scale dissolved air flotation (DAF) using microbubble generator with ion exchange resin process was combined and developed in order to apply for the treatment of wet scrubber wastewater. The results of the present study revealed that operating conditions, such as resin property, bed volume (BV), and inlet wastewater flow rate, significantly affect the removal performance. Finally, through a pilot test, DAF with ion exchange resin process showed a noticeable improvement of the nitrate removal rate compared to the single DAF process.

  • Compared with the sludge from gravity sedimentation, it is difficult for operations to settle the sludge occurred from dissolved-air-flotation (DAF). Even though there are some problems in treating DAF sludge with conventional gravity thickeners, those has been used until now. In this study, Solid Flux theory for gravity thickening was applied to the Solid Flux of DAF sludge through flotation in order to develop new methodology for treatment of DAF sludge. Also, characteristics of DAF sludge were investigated. From the experiment results, it was revealed that the higher the polymer dosage, at fixed the solid concentration, the greater the rising velocity becomes. When we applied solid flux theory, the relationship, which is similar to that of gravity thickening, has been achieved. Also, we could find the proper polymer dosage from the rising velocity is about 50 mg/L. Consequently, the limiting solid flux can be derived from the relationship between the total solid flux and the withdrawal velocity of DAF sludge. Furthermore, the factors, such as solid concentrations, bubble volume, pH, zeta potential, and temperature, have effects on the flotation and sedimentation for DAF sludge treatment.

  • Bubble size is one of the most important parameters affecting DAF (Dissolved-Air-Flotation) process. It is generally known that small bubbles are preferred. However, the fact seems to be based on the particle removal efficiency at contact zone only, without considering separation zone. Besides, the effect of bubble size on the overall DAF process has not been fully investigated yet. Therefore, the effect of bubble size on collision efficiency, collision chances, and surface loading rate is calculated using theoretical models, and the results are discussed in this paper.

  • The supernatant treatment of recovery process of raw materials of paper plant was studied using DAF (Dissolved Air Flotation) system. We investigated the removal efficiency (COD, SS and turbidity) of the DAF process. The effects of parameters such as A/S ratio, pressure, flotation conditions, coagulant concentration, mixing conditions, size and ratio of packing and nozzle type were examined. The results showed that the optimum A/S ratio and pressure were 0.058 and 4.5-5 atm, respectively. Injection times of pressurized water around 30 s and flotation times around 10 min appeared to be optimal for the DAF operation. Anion polymer addition improved the removal of COD, SS and turbidity. The smaller size and the more packing ratio were enhanced the removal efficiencies. The order of performance of nozzle was full cone > flat > assemble type.

  • Although the bubble-floc agglomerate floated and formed the float layer on the surface of the water in the DAF process, after inducing in the thickening tank a part of the bubble-floc agglomerate come up again to the surface and the other is settled at the bottom of the tank. The bubble-floc agglomerate divided into two group as the scum on the surface and the sludge of the bottom gives rise to operational troubles for the thickening process. In order to find out the cause of break-up and the effective thickening method for sludge from the DAF process, the composition of the bubble-floc agglomerate was investigated and a series of flotation experiments carried out. There was no difference of composition between the scum on the surface and the sludge of the bottom in the thickening tank. The coagulation was not effective to improve the trouble that the bubble-floc agglomerate divided into the scum and the sludge. It was estimated that for the bubble-floc agglomerate of thickening tank the trouble was caused by not the change or the difference of chemical composition but whether the bubble-floc agglomerate hold bubbles. Furthermore, for the effective thickening of sludge from the DAF process, it is required an additional flotation applied the AS ratio depending upon the solid concentration of sludge as the operation parameter.

  • The purpose of the study is to evaluate the treatability of contaminated groundwater with TPH and (or) $Cr^{6+}$. Laboratory scale tests were performed for oil/water separation, dissolved air flotation (DAF), coagulation and precipitation, and filtration with sand and activated carbon respectively. Two times of oil/water separation tests for total 40 minutes of separation or separating time shows 90.2 % of TPH removal rate. In case of DAF test for high TPH sample, the TPH removal rates were not varied significantly by the variation of microbubble size. However, tests for low TPH samples show that TPH removal rate increases as microbubbles are smaller. When coagulant was added to sample for DAF test, TPH removal rate was increased 12.3 %. SS removal rate by DAF was 97.9 % at $16-40{\mu}m$ and it was increased as the size of microbubble is reduced. Tests for coagulation and precipitation were performed to evaluate the removal of $Cr^{6+}$ in groundwater. The increase of $FeSO_4$ dosage increased $Cr^{6+}$ removal rate in the coagulation and precipitation process. As the amount of activated carbon in the filter media increased TPH removal rate in the filtration process. SS removal rate by the filtration was 96.7 % similar to the results of DAF process tests. The filtration process treats TPH and SS. Best design parameters are determined as the size of sand is $425-850{\mu}m$ and the ratio of activated carbon and sand is 50:50.

  • In this study, a lab-scale test was performed to apply the ozone process in drinking water treatment plant using dissolved ai, flotation(DAF). The kinetic study on the ozone decay and hydroxyl(OH) radical formation was investigated by several parameters, such as I.D(Instantaneous ozone demand), $k_c$(ozone decomposition rate), ozone-Ct and OH radical-Ct. Ozonation of several target waters, such as raw water, DAF treated water and filtrate, was conducted to select the optimum position and dosage of ozone process. The highest value of Ozone-Ct and OH radical-Ct was observed at DAF treated water at initial run time($0{\sim}30\;min$). From the results of ozonation, the intermediate ozonation was proposed as the optimum position and the effective dose of ozone was determined to be $1{\sim}2\;mg/L$.

  • Pollutants in aquaculture system effluent mostly originated from solid wastes including uneaten feed and excreta of cultured species. In this research, DAF(Dissolved Air Flotation) unit is suggested as an integrated solid control unit especially as a form of IIBG(Inline Injection Bubble Generation) process in aquaculture system. Solid removal performance of DAF unit was examined under various operation and salinity conditions with turbidity and suspended solid. Solid waste removal efficiencies were found to be affected by operation conditions including saturator pressure, recycle ratio, coagulant concentration. Solid removal efficiency was higher under higher saturator pressure and recycle ratio under which condition larger number of bubbles is generated. Coagulant is thought to have important role in creating bubble-particle aggregate by showing better removal efficiency with higher concentration. However higher saline water showed less effectiveness in removing solids by DAF(IIBG). Application of DAF(IIBG) process also showed additional effect in phosphate removal and DO(Dissolved Oxygen) supply. Phosphate existed in polluted water was removed up to 46% after treatment, which is thought to attribute to aluminium phosphate precipitation. And DO concentration was found to increase over 50% of initial saturation concentration after the injection of micro-bubbles. Through experiments on solid removal from aquaculture effluent, DAF(IIBG) process is estimated to be effective solid control method. This property can help aquaculture system being installed and operated simply and effectively.
