  • This paper presents the development of a magneto-optical encoder for higher precision and smaller size. In general, optical encoders can have very high precision based on the position information of the slate, while their sizes tend to be larger due to the presence of complex and large components, such as an optical module. In contrast, magnetic encoders have exactly the opposite characteristics, i.e., small size and low precision. In order to achieve encoder features encompassing the advantages of both optical and magnetic encoders, i.e., high precision and small size, we designed a magneto-optical encoder and developed a method to detect absolute position, by compensating for the error of the hall sensor using the linear table compensation method. The performance of the magneto-optical encoder was evaluated through an experimental testbed.

  • In recent years, there have been emerging needs for standardized software-based motion application development for better scalability and support for multiple operation modes for small quantity batch production. Although a software-based motion system provides a basis for constructing multiple operation modes on a machine, it is not easy to construct such systems without tools for defining multiple motion operation modes and standardized mode-change protocols. This paper proposes a motion recipe concept to overcome this problem; the concept includes the authoring of multiple motion operation modes using the PLCopen-compliant motion function blocks and communication protocols to trigger operation mode changes from an external interface. The motion recipe was implemented by extending an IEC 61131-3 compliant IDE called Beremiz, and the correctness of the motion recipe-based application behavior was verified on a real testbed.

  • Recently, mobile communication systems using the millimeter-wave frequency band have been proposed, and the importance of efficient compensation of the nonlinearity caused by 60 GHz high-power amplifiers(HPAs) is increasing. In this paper, we propose a predistorter structure based on multiple coefficient sets which are separately used to different ranges of input power values. These ranges correspond to varying levels of nonlinearity characteristics. The structure is applied to the 60 GHz HPA FMM5715X and the performance of correcting the nonlinearity of LTE signals is evaluated. Evaluation results using a hardware testbed demonstrate that the proposed predistorter structure achieves the maximum of 6 dB gain over the conventional method in terms of the adjacent channel leakage ratio(ACLR).

  • This paper presents the design and FPGA implementation of a FLEX PSP(Protocol Signal Processor) for the portable high speed paging system. In this approach, two algorithms are newly proposed for implementing the PSP which provides capabilities of the maximum 6,400bps at speed, high-channel throughput, real time error correction and an effective frame search function. One is an accurate symbol synchronization algorithm which is applied for synchronizing the interleaved 4-level bit symbols which are received at input stage of A/D converter, and the other is a modified fast decoding algorithm which is provided for realizing double error correction of (31,21)BCH signal. The PSP is composed of six functional modules, and each module is modelled in VHDL(VHSIC Hardware Description Language). Both functional simulation and logic synthesis have performed for the proposed PSP through the use of Synopsys$^{TM}$ tools on a Axil-320 Workstation, and where Altera 10K libraries are used for logic synthesis. From logic synthesis, we can see that the number of gates is about 2,631. For FPGA implementation, timing simulation is performed by using Altera MAX+ PLUS II, and its results will be also given. The PSP which is implemented in 6 FPGA devices on a PCB has been verified by means of Logic Analyzer.r.

  • Recently, the early detection and prevention of worm research is mainly studying based on the analysis of generalized worm propagation property. However, it is not easy to do Worm early detection with its attributes because the modeling method for Worm propagation is vague and not specified yet. Worm scanning method is exceedingly effect to Worm propagation process. This paper describes a modeling method and its simulations to estimate various worm growth patterns and their corresponding propagation algorithms. It also tests and varies the impact of various improvements, starting from a trivial simulation of worm propagation and the underlying network infrastructure. It attempts to determine the theoretical maximum propagation speed of worms and how it can be achieved. Moreover, we present the feasibility of the proposed model based on real testbed for verification.

  • In many developed countries, such as South Korea, efficiently maintaining the aging infrastructures is an important issue. Currently, inspectors visually inspect the infrastructure for maintenance needs, but this method is inefficient due to its high costs, long logistic times, and hazards to the inspectors. Thus, in this paper, a novel crack inspection approach for concrete bridges is proposed using integrated image processing techniques. The proposed approach consists of four steps: (1) training a deep learning model to automatically detect cracks on concrete bridges, (2) acquiring in-situ images using a drone, (3) generating orthomosaic images based on 3D modeling, and (4) detecting cracks on the orthmosaic image using the trained deep learning model. Cascade Mask R-CNN, a state-of-the-art instance segmentation deep learning model, was trained with 3235 crack images that included 2415 hard negative images. We selected the Tancheon overpass, located in Seoul, South Korea, as a testbed for the proposed approach, and we captured images of pier 34-37 and slab 34-36 using a commercial drone. Agisoft Metashape was utilized as a 3D model generation program to generate an orthomosaic of the captured images. We applied the proposed approach to four orthomosaic images that displayed the front, back, left, and right sides of pier 37. Using pixel-level precision referencing visual inspection of the captured images, we evaluated the trained Cascade Mask R-CNN's crack detection performance. At the coping of the front side of pier 37, the model obtained its best precision: 94.34%. It achieved an average precision of 72.93% for the orthomosaics of the four sides of the pier. The test results show that this proposed approach for crack detection can be a suitable alternative to the conventional visual inspection method.

  • The C-ITS requires the lane level positioning of the vehicle in the land transportation environment, and it is most effective to utilize the GNSS. In the precision positioning system based on satellite navigation, the evaluation of dynamic environment of lane level positioning performance should be accompanied and the evaluation system configuration should be preceded. In this paper, we selected performance indicators, assessment equipment, and reliability of reference equipment for evaluation of precision positioning user systems based on the GNSS. The performance evaluation system described above is applied to a real system, and the performance evaluation tool developed for the evaluation system is described. The numerical performance evaluation was carried out based on the data collected by carrying out the actual testbed driving. The performance evaluation by the actual driving trajectory and driving image comparison was performed to derive and analyse the evaluation results of the vehicle lane level positioning user system.

  • This study addresses on the design of performance monitoring system for the time synchronization service of the enhanced long-range navigation (eLoran) system, which has a representative ground-wave radio broadcast system capable of providing positioning, navigation, timing and data (PNT&D) services. The limitations of time-synchronized systems due to the signal vulnerabilities of the global navigation satellite system (GNSS) are explained, and the performance monitoring system for the eLoran timing service as a backup to the GNSS is proposed. The time synchronization service using eLoran system as well as system configurations and the user requirements in the differential Loran (dLoran) system are described to monitor the time synchronization performance. The results of the designed system are presented for long-term operation in the eLoran testbed environment. As the results of time performance monitoring, we were able to verify the time synchronization precision within 43.71 ns without corrections, 22.52 ns with corrections. Based on these results, the eLoran system can be utilized as a precise time synchronization source for GPS timing backup.

  • The performance of fault diagnostics for a planetary gearbox depends on vibration modulation characteristics, which can vary with manufacturing & assembly tolerance, and load condition. In this paper, a fault diagnostics technique that considers vibration modulation characteristics is proposed for the effective fault detection of planetary gearboxes in wind turbines. For identifying the vibration modulation characteristics in practice, re-sampled vibration signals are processed with narrow band-pass filters. Thereafter, the optimal position of the vibration extraction window is identified for effective detection of faulty signals under the varying vibration modulation characteristics. The proposed diagnostics technique makes it possible to perform robust diagnostics of the planetary gearbox with regard to the changeable vibration modulation effect. For demonstrating the proposed fault diagnostics technique, a 2-kW WT testbed is designed with two DC motors and gearboxes. A faulty gear with partial tooth breakage is machined and assembled into the gearbox.
