Process Optimization for Improving Resistance Welding Quality of Cylindrical Secondary Battery (원통형 이차전지의 저항용접 품질 향상을 위한 공정 최적화)

  • Purpose: This study aims to determine the optimal conditions for the spot welding process that mechanically connects the case of a cylindrical secondary battery and the negative tab. Methods: We use 33 factorial design to derive the optimal conditions for the spot welding process. The pulling strength, the cross-sectional area of nugget, and the shock test life are selected as response variables, which can represent the resistance welding quality. The input variables are selected as the welding time, welding voltage, and pressure, which are the controllable factors in the spot welding process. Results: The main effects of welding time and welding voltage and the interaction effect of welding time and welding voltage are significant. Conclusion: The optimal conditions for the spot welding process to mechanically join the negative electrode tab of the cylindrical secondary battery and the battery case are developed. The result shows that the pulling strength is increased by 44% compared to before improvement under optimal conditions.

C-rate based electrical characteristics and equivalent circuit modeling of 18650 cylindrical Li-ion battery for nuclear power plant application (원전 비상전원 적용성 판단을 위한 다양한 C-rate 기반 원통형 리튬이온 배터리의 전기적 특성분석 및 모델링)

  • The recent incidents of Nuclear Power Plant(NPP) gave rise to a total power outage caused by the loss of the functions of the off-site and the emergency power supply. Currently, emergency power supply of NPP have been taken into account by Li-ion batteries instead of existing lead-acid batteries. In order to judge the applicability of the cylindrical Li-ion battery, it is necessary to analysis the results of various electrical tests. This paper investigates the basic electrical characteristics test of three types of cylindrical batteries in order to select the most suitable battery and estimate state of battery through equivalent circuit model and propose method to solve the problem.

  • Smart battery pack (SBP) for notebook PCs was developed using a cylindrical-type lithium ion battery. Batteries were connected with three serial and two parallel, the nominal capacity and the maximum load of SBP was 4,000mAh and 4.0A, respectively. The SBP was composed of a protection IC, by which safety of lithium ion batteries is maintained against overcharge, overdischarge and overcurrent, and a smart IC, which calculates the remaining capacity and the remaining run time. In matching test on notebook PC using Battery Mark 4.0, real and smart data of END voltage coincided nearly and LB and LLB signal worked norma]]y. And there were errors of less than 1% between the real and the smart data on the residual capacity in the charge and discharge test.

  • Eco-friendly hybrid railroad propulsion system with fuel-cell and battery was suggested to reduce carbon dioxide gas and replace retired diesel railroads. Lithium-ion battery with high energy/power density and long lifetime is selected as the energy source at the battery side due to its excellent performance. However, the performance of lithium-ion batteries was affected by temperature, current rate, and operating condition. Temperature is known to be the most influential factor in changing battery parameters. In addition, appropriate thermal management is required to ensure the safe and effective operation of lithium-ion battery. Electro-thermal coupled model with varying parameter depends on temperature, and state-of-charge (SOC) is suggested to estimate battery temperature. The electric-thermal coupled model contains diffusion current using parameter identification by adaptive control algorithm when considering thermal diffusion effect. An experiment under forced convection was conducted using cylindrical cell and 18 parallel-connected battery module to demonstrate the method.

  • Given that lithium-ion batteries are expected to be used as power sources for electric and hybrid vehicles, thermodynamics experimentation and prediction based on experimental data were performed. Thermal, electrochemical, and electrochemical/electrical-thermal models were used for accurate battery modeling. Various applications of different battery packs were demonstrated, and thermal analysis was performed using the same experimental conditions for square and rectangular battery packs. Accurate thermal analysis for a single cell should be prioritized to determine the thermal behavior of the battery pack. The energy balance equation, which contains heat generation and heat transfer factors, defines the thermal behavior of the battery pack. By comparing battery packs of different shapes tested under the same condition, this study revealed that the rectangular battery pack is superior to the square battery pack in terms of the maximum temperature of inner cells and temperature variation between cells.

  • This paper describes the preparation and characteristics of a battery capacitor and module for solar power system. A cylindrical 30,000F battery capacitor ($60{\times}138mm$) was assembled by using the $LTO(Li_4Ti_5O_{12})$ electrode as an anode and $NMC(LiNiMnCoO_2)-LCO(LiCoO_2)$ as a cathode. The battery capacitor has reduced energy density and power density under high CC(constant current) and CP(constant power) conditions. Battery capacitor module (16V, 11Ah) was fabricated using an asymmetric hybrid capacitor with a capacitance of 30,000F. In order to determine the characteristics of the battery capacitor Module for solar power system, battery capacitor cells were connected in series with active balancing circuit. As a result of measuring the 100w LED lamp, it was discharged at the voltage of 15V~10V, and the compensation time at discharge was measured to be about 4979s. Experimental results show that it can be applied to applications related to solar power system by applying battery capacitor module.

Study on cooling performance and isothermal maintenance of cylindrical type lithium-ion battery cell using phase change material (상변화물질을 활용한 원통형 리튬이온 배터리 셀의 냉각성능 및 등온유지성에 관한 연구)

  • When lithium-ion batteries operate out of the proper temperature range, their performance can be significantly degraded and safety issues such as thermal runaway can occur. Therefore, battery thermal management systems are widely researched to maintain the temperature of Li-ion battery cells within the proper temperature range during the charging and discharging process. This study investigates the cooling performance and isothermal maintenance of cooling materials by measuring the surface temperature of a battery cell with or without cooling materials, such as silicone oil, thermal adhesive, and phase change materials during discharge process of battery by the experimental and numerical analysis. As a result of the experiment, the battery pack filled with phase change material showed a temperature reduction of 47.4 ℃ compared to the case of natural convection. It proves the advanced utility of the cooling unit using phase change material that is suitable for use in battery thermal management systems.

The thermal impedance spectroscopy on Li-ion batteries using heat-pulse response analysis

  • Novel characterization of thermal properties of a battery has been introduced by defining its frequency-dependent thermal impedance function. Thermal impedance function can be approximated as a thermal impedance spectrum by analyzing experimental temperature transient which is related to the thermal impedance function through Laplace transformation. In order to obtain temperature transient, a process has been devised to generate external heat pulse with heating wire and to measure the response of battery. This process is used to study several commercial Li-ion batteries of cylindrical type. The thermal impedance measurements have been performed using potentionstat/galvanostate controlled digital signal processor, which is more commonly available than flow-meter usually applied for thermal property measurements. Thermal impedance spectra obtained for batteries produced by different manufactures are found to differ considerably. Comparison of spectra at different states of charge indicates independence of thermal impedance on charging state of battery. It is shown that thermal impedance spectrum can be used to obtain simultaneously thermal capacity and thermal conductivity of battery by non-linear complex least-square fit of the spectrum to thermal impedance model. Obtained data is used to simulate a response of the battery to internal heating during discharge. It is found that temperature inside the battery is by one-third larger that on its surface. This observation has to be considered to prevent damage by overheating.

Rapid-Charging Solution for 18650 Cylindrical Lithium-Ion Battery Packs for Forklifts

  • In this paper, we propose a rapid-charging system for the lithium-ion battery (LIB) packs used in electric forklifts. The battery offers three benefits: reduced charge time, prolonged battery life, and increased charging efficiency. A rapid-charging algorithm and DC/DC converter topology are proposed to achieve these benefits. This algorithm is developed using an electrochemical model, which controls the maximum charging current limit depending on the cell voltage and temperature. The experimental use of a selected 18650 LIB cell verified the prolongation of battery life on use of the algorithm. The proposed converter offers the same topological merits as a conventional resonant converter but solves the light-load regulation problem of conventional resonant converters by adopting pulse-width modulation. A 6.6-kW converter and charging algorithm were used with a forklift battery pack to verify this method's operational principles and advantages.
