Exploration of power take off in wave energy converters with two-body interaction

  • The study explores a novel design of wave energy converter (WEC) that utilizes the interaction between an inside heaving vertical cylinder with an outside fixed hollow cylinder. This design originates from the oscillating water column (OWC) type WEC but replaces the pneumatic power take off (PTO) through the Wells turbine with the hydrodynamic PTO through the inside heaving cylinder. To effectively evaluate the maximum power output, the system has been modeled in the hydrodynamic software AQWA (developed by ANSYS Inc) that has accumulated extensive offshore industry users. Ranges of the PTO parameters have been examined to make sure that proper linear damping can be implemented to simulate the PTO force. Comparing the efficiency of the pneumatic PTO with the hydrodynamic PTO, it appears that the hydrodynamic PTO is more promising than the traditional Wells turbine for an OWC system.

  • This paper is to propose a concept and performance of the gravity engine which could extract energy from sea or river as a clean and renewable and sustainable power, the tidal or hydro-power. The vertical motion of the buoyancy cylinder of the present gravity engine is converted to the mechanical work directly without any hydraulic loss. The increased gravity potential during high tide is harnessed proportional to the length of the buoyancy cylinder times tidal height which is greater than the conventional tidal power using water mill. This energy amplification results from the net energy gain between the resource energy and the imposed energy to extract water out of the buoyancy cylinder. Its efficiency is higher than the conventional water mill due to its direct mechanical conversion.

  • An engine for marine propulsion and power generation consists of several cylinder liner-piston sets. And the oil groove is on the cylinder liner inside wall for the lubrication between a piston and cylinder. The machining process of oil groove has been carried by manual work so far, because of the diversity of the shape. Recently, we developed an automatic grinding robot system for oil groove machining of engine cylinder liners. It can covers various types of oil grooves and adjust its position by itself. The grinding robot system consists of a robot, a machining tool head, sensors and a control system. The robot automatically recognizes the cylinder liner's inside configuration by using a laser displacement sensor and a vision sensor after the cylinder liner is placed on a set-up equipment.

  • In general, natural gas engine converted from gasoline engine has disadvantage of power decrease. In order to increase power output in natural gas engine, the improvement of in-cylinder flow motion has been believed as the most effective method. In this study, the geometry of combustion chamber in 4 valve DOHC natural gas engine is modified, and in-cylinder flow patterns is analyized. Also engine performance is evaluated according to the modification of in-cylinder flow motion.

  • This paper describes characteristics of the flow pattern of the flow past a rectangular cylinder experimentally investigated. The width-to-length ratio of the section varried from 2 to4. For the statistical treatment, autocorrelation coefficient, probability density function and power spectral density function are obtained by the digital processing technic through on-line system with a hot wire anemometer. As a results, it was found that strong periodic coherent eddies structure is sustained to about 20H downstream from the cylinder. And nearer the cylinder in the wake, the number of turbulent eddies of a large scale coherent structure are comparatively much more dominant than that of a small scale one. By the analysis of power spectrum, It was cleared that there exists a certain range of the width to length ratio between 2.5 and 3 of which the flow pattern changes abruptly with a sudden discontinuity in Strouhal number.

  • In this study, 6-DOF simulator using pneumatic cylinder driving apparatus was manufactured because a pneumatic cylinder driving apparatus is superior to electric driving motor and hydraulic actuator, which used in traditional 6-DOF simulator, in competitive price and acceleration performance, and, 6-DOF motion can be realized at a low price in case that relatively low load is imposed on the simulator. The possible range of pose control of the simulator was investigated by inverse kinematics, and, it was controlled by a linear controller derived from linear model of the simulator. The Experimental results show that the simulator follows given coordinate well.

  • In this paper, the flow field with steady, axisymmetric flow characteristics in cylinder has been numerically investigated. The prediction of flow in cylinder was compared to experimental result. The turbulence closure being applied was K-${\epsilon}$ model and numerical scheme was Hybrid and Power-law scheme. The results of numerical computation showed some deviation from exper- imental data in the in cial region of cylinder, where streamline curvature is significant. However, the computational results agree qualitatively well with Mores's experimental results and the difference between Hybrid and Power-law schows similar results

  • In this study, position and force simultaneous trajectory tracking control apparatus with pneumatic cylinder driving system is proposed. The pneumatic cylinder driving system that consists of two pneumatic cylinders constrained in series and two proportional flow control valves offers a considerable advantage as to non-interaction of the actuators because of the low stiffness of the pneumatic actuators. The controller applied to the driving system is composed of a non-interaction controller to compensate for interaction of two cylinders and a disturbance observer to reduce the effect of model discrepancy of the driving system in the low frequency range that cannot be suppressed by the non-interaction controller. The experimental results with the proposed control apparatus show that the interacting effects of two cylinders are eliminated remarkably and the proposed control apparatus tracks the given position and force trajectory accurately.

  • This study presents a new approach to pressure control of a impression cylinder for roll coater which is a kind of face pressure control between blanket roll and impression roll. Roll-to-Roll method for printing is a very useful tool for mass production such as RFID elements, smart sensors and solar cell devices. In this study, a decupling control strategy of the roll coater which is a combination of a cylinder system, a dry system and two pressure regulators with two pneumatic cylinders was discussed. Also, the characteristics of component such as a pressure regulator having a pressure reducing function and the movement of a blanket roll and a impression cylinder were analyzed using the Matlab software. From this results, the techniques of a shock and a vibration reduction were suggested.
