Vortex-Induced Vibration (VIV) is a major contributor to the fatigue damage of marine risers which are often arranged in an array configuration. In addition to helical strakes and fairings, studies have been strived in searching for possible VIV suppression techniques. Inspired by giant Saguaro Cacti, flexible cylinders of different cactus-shaped cross sections were tested in a water tunnel facility, and test results showed that cactus-like body shapes reduced VIV responses of a cylinder at no cost of significant increase of drag. A series of experiments were conducted on a pair of two tandem-arranged flexible cylinders and an array of four cylinders in a square configuration to investigate the effects of wake on the dynamic responses of cylinders and the VIV mitigation effectiveness of the cactus-like body shape. Results showed that the cylinders in a square configuration, either at the upstream or downstream positions, might have larger dynamic responses than those of a single cylinder. The cactus-like body shape could mitigate VIV responses of cylinders at upstream positions in an array configuration; however, similar to helical strakes, the mitigation efficiency was reduced on downstream cylinders. Note that the cactus-like cross-sectional shape investigated was not optimized for VIV suppression. The present study indicates that the modification of the cross-sectional shape of a cylinder to a well-designed cactus-like shape may be used as an alternative technique to mitigate the VIV of marine risers.
A parametric study has been carried out to elucidate the characteristics of channel flow with a streamwise-periodic array of cylinders. This flow configuration is relevant to heat exchanger applications. The presence of cylinders in channel flow causes the attached wall boundary layer to separate, leading to significant change in flow instabilities. There exist two kinds of instabilities; flow undergoes a primary instability (Hopf bifurcaiton) at a lower Reynolds number, and the unsteady two-dimensional flow becomes unstable to three-dimensional disturbances at a higher Reynolds number. We report here the dependencies of the primary instability as well as the flow characteristics of the subsequent unsteady flow including flow-induced forces and Strouhal number of vortex shedding, on the distance between the cylinder and the channel wall.
Using wind tunnel, experimental approaches were employed to investigate fluidelastic instability of tube bundles, subjected to uniform cross flow. There are several flow-induced vibration excitation mechanisms, such as fluidelastic instability, periodic wake shedding resonance, turbulence-induced excitation and acoustic resonance, which could cause excessive vibration in shell-and tube heat exchanges. Fluidelastic is the most important vibration excitation mechanism for heat exchanger tube bundles subjected to cross flow. The system comprised of cantilevered flexible cylinder(s) and rigid cylinders of normal square array, In order to see the characteristics of flow in tube bundles, particle image velocimetry was used. From a practical design point of view, Fluidelastic instability may be expressed simply in terms of dimensionless flow velocity and dimensionless mass-damping. The threshold flow velocity for dynamic instability of cylinder rows is evaluated and the data for design guideline is proposed for the tube bundles of normal square array.
As a result of vehicle maintenance of rocker arm shaft for 4-cylinder SOHC engine, failure analysis of rocker arm shaft is needed. Because more than $30\%$ of vehicles investigated have been fractured. Failure analysis is classified into an naked eyes, microscope and X-ray fractography etc. It can predict applied load as well as load type. These methods are applicable to components with simple boundary condition but aren't applicable to components with complex boundary condition. The existing fractography don't catch hold of failure boundary condition quantitatively. Especially, in case that the components isn't fractured at same position. We must determine the most dangerous failure boundary condition to evaluate their operation mechanism. The effect of various factors on response should be estimated to solve this statical problem. This study presents the most dangerous failure boundary condition of rocker arm shaft using orthogonal array and ANOVA in order to assure its robustness.

We present design and fabrication of a multi-focusing microlens array (MLA) using a thermal reflow method. To obtain multi-focusing properties with different numerical apertures at the elemental lens of the MLA, double-cylinder photoresist (PR) structures with different diameters were made within the guiding pattern with both photolithographic and partial developing processes. Due to the base PR layer supporting the thermal reflow process and the guiding structure, the thermally reflowed PR structure had different radii of curvatures with lens shapes that could be precisely modeled by the initial volume of the double-cylinder PR structures. Using the PR template, the hexagonally packed multi-focusing MLA was made via the replica molding method, which showed four different focal lengths of 0.9 mm, 1.1 mm, 1.6 mm, and 2.5 mm, and four different numerical apertures of 0.1799, 0.2783, 0.3973, and 0.4775.
The water wave interactions on any three-dimensional structure of arbitrary geometry can be calculated numerically through the use of source distribution or Green's function techniques. However, such a method can be computationally expensive. In the present study, the water wave interactions in floating circular cylinder arrays were investigated numerically using the eigenfunction expansion method with the three- dimensional potential theory to reduce the computational expense. The wave excitation force, added mass coefficient, radiation damping coefficient, and wave run-up are presented with the water wave interactions in an array of 5 or 9 cylinders. The effects of the number of cylinders and the spacing between them are examined because the water wave interactions in floating circular cylinder arrays are significantly dependent upon these.
In this research, we report all the elements are placed in the space above the patient table as a transmit coil to give optimized B1+ field for the body object. Through the simulations, we compared upper-and-lower parts combined 8 channel Tx array to upper only 8 channel Tx array and showed the utilities of B1+ shimming in multi-channel Tx body imaging at 3T. Half-cylinder shaped upper array shows weak B1+ field area around back of patient without B1+ shimming. After B1+ shimming, highly induced SAR places occurred in the arm region due to the close distance to the both end elements which were driven by very high RF current to enhance B1+ in back area. The proposed upper and lower combined array provides an enhanced homogeneous B1+ field in large ROI imaging as a result of shimming over the body size phantom. Through this research we proved the usefulness of the proposed insertional upper and lower parts combined transmit array for 3T body imaging.
Three-dimensional and time-dependent solution for the fluid flow and heat transfer past a circular cylinder with fins is obtained using accurate and efficient spectral methods. A Fourier expansion with a corresponding uniform grid is used along the circumferential direction. A spectral multi-domain method with a corresponding Chebyshev collocation is used along r-z plane to handle fins attached to the surface of a circular cylinder. At the Reynolds number of 300 based on a cylinder diameter, results with fins are compared with those without fins in order to see the effects of the presence of fins on three-dimensional and unsteady fluid flow and heat transfer past a bluff body. The detail structures of fluid flow and temperature field are obtained as a function of time to investigate how the presence of fins changes heat transfer mechanism related to the vortical structure in the wake region.
