As an attempt to reduce the consumption of petroleum resources and to improve the performance of a kerosene engine, a series of experiments was conducted using several kinds of ethanol-kerosene blends under the various compression ratios. The engine used in this study was a single-cylinder, four-cycle kerosene engine having a compression ratio of 4.5. To investigate the feasibility of ethanol-kerosene blends in the original engine, kerosene and blends of 5-percent, 10-percent, and 20-percent-ethanol, by volume, with kerosene were used. And to investigate the feasibility of improving the performance of the kerosene engine, a portion of the cylinder head was cut off to increase the compression ratio up to 5.0 by reducing the combustion chamber volume. Kerosene and blends of 30-percent and 40-percent-ethanol, by volume, with kerosene were used for the modified engine with an increased compression ratio. Variable speed tests at wide-open throttle were also conducted at five speed levels in the range of 1000 to 2200 rpm for each compression ratio and fuel type. Volumetric efficiency, engine torque, and brake specific fuel consumption were determined, and brake thermal efficiency based on the lower heating values of kerosene and ethanol was calculated. The results obtained in the study are summarized as follows: A. Test with the original engine: (1) No abnormal conditions were found when burning ethanol-kerosene blends in the original engine. (2) Volumetric efficiency increased with ethanol concentration in blends. When burning blends of 5-percent, 10-percent, and 20-percent ethanol, by volume, with kerosene, average volumetric efficiency increased 1.6 percent, 2.6 percent, and 4.1 percent respectively, than when burning kerosene. (3) Mean engine torque increased 5.2 percent for 5-percent-ethanol blend, 9.3 percent for 10-percent-ethanol blend, and 11.5 percent for 20-percent-ethanol blend than for kerosene. Increase in engine torque when using ethanol-kerosene blends was due to the improved combustion characteristics of ethanol as well as an increase in volumetric efficiency. (4) Up to ethanol concentration of 20 percent, mean brake specific fuel consumption was nearly constant inspite of the difference in heating value between ethanol and kerosene. (5) Brake thermal efficiency increased 0.3 percent for 5-percent-ethanol blend, 3.8 percent for 10-percent-ethanol blend, and 6.8 percent for 20-percent-ethanol blend than for kerosene. B. Test with the modified engine with an increased compression ratio: (1) When burning kerosene, mean volumetric efficiency, engine torque, and brake thermal efficiency were somewhat lower than for the original engine. (2) Engine torque increased 15.1 percent for 30-percent-ethanol blend and 18.4 percent for 40-percent-ethanol blend than for kerosene. (3) There was no significant difference in brake specific fuel consumption regardless of ethanol concentration in blends. (4) Brake thermal efficiency increased 15.0 percent for 30-percent-ethanol blend and 19. 5 percent for 40-percent-ethanol blend than for kerosene.
Ultra-high strength concrete and high tensile steel are becoming very attractive materials for high-rise buildings because of the need to reduce member size and structural self-weight. However, limited test data and design guidelines are available to support the applications of high strength materials for building constructions. This paper presents significant findings from comprehensive experimental investigations on the behaviour of tubular columns in-filled with ultra-high strength concrete at ambient and elevated temperatures. A series of tests was conducted to investigate the basic mechanical properties of the high strength materials, and structural behaviour of stub columns under concentric compression, beams under moment and slender beam-columns under concentric and eccentric compression. High tensile steel with yield strength up to 780 MPa and ultra-high strength concrete with compressive cylinder strength up to 180 MPa were used to construct the test specimens. The test results were compared with the predictions using a modified Eurocode 4 approach. In addition, more than 2000 test data samples collected from literature on concrete filled steel tubes with normal and high strength materials were also analysed to formulate the design guide for implementation in practice.
Early investigations focused mainly on manipulating the confinement effect to develop a reinforced concrete column with lateral hoops. Based on this legacy model, Li's model incorporated the additional confinement effect of a steel jacket. However, recent experiments on plain concrete cylinders with steel jackets revealed relatively large discrepancies in the estimates of strength enhancement and the post-peak behavior. Here, we describe a modified constitutive law for confined concrete with an unbonded external steel jacket in terms of three regions for the loading stage. We used a two-phase heterogeneous concrete model to simulate the uniaxial compression test of a $150mm{\times}300mm$ concrete cylinder with three thicknesses of steel jackets: 1.0 mm, 1.5 mm, and 2.0 mm. The proposed constitutive model was verified by a series of finite element analyses using a finite element program. The damaged plasticity model and extended Drucker-Prager model were applied and compared in terms of the level of pressure sensitivity for confinement in 3D. The proposed model yielded results that were in close agreement with the experimental results.
The aim of this work is to investigate the combustion and exhaust emission characteristics of low-temperature combustion (LTC) at various EGR test conditions using a single cylinder common-rail diesel engine. In high EGR rate combustion mode with DME fuel, 30% (${\Phi}=0.61$) and 50% (${\Phi}=0.86$) of EGR were respectively examined, and then the combustion, exhaust emissions, nano-particle characteristics of each cases were measured. From these results, it revealed that The ignition delay and combustion duration are prolonged as the increase of EGR rate. In addition, at an advanced injection timing (BTDC $30^{\circ}$), ignition delays were fairly increased because the dilution effect of EGR and also low charge in-cylinder temperature created a lean mixture, thus decreased the peak release rate.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of water injection on combustion characteristics of gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine with turbo-charger under low-load operating condition. The test engine used in this study has four-cylinder and 10.2 of compression ratio. In order to study the effect of water injection ratio on combustion characteristics, the water was injected into the intake port from 10% to 50%, based on fuel injection quantity. From the experiment, it revealed that the water injection induced the improvement of fuel economy because of the advance of spark-timing by the reduction of in-cylinder temperature. In addition, the water injection caused the prolong of extension of the ignition delay and slight increase of burn duration.
In this paper, 3-D reciprocating compressor is taken into flow-structure interaction analysis. The full cycle process consisted of cylinder expansion and compression has been modeled without considering flow leakage through cylinder wall. Fully-coupled FSI analysis of this compressor model was iteratively solved and gives sufficient result with the experimental test. The study is emphasized to thoroughly investigate discharge valve motion, opening and closing, in order to determine discharge valve region which is prone to have high effective stress. The cylinder pressure is successfully validated before conducting impact analyses between discharge valve and other susceptible supported structure. Velocity profile has been obtained in FSI analysis is used as initial condition to carry out further impact analyses. Stress result of discharge valve and valve spring gives preliminary estimation of higher stress area due to its impact phenomena.
In this study. an experimental study has been introduced for the various exhaust pipe geometry of 4-stroke single cylinder engine. The main experimental parameters are the variation of exhaust pipe diameters and lengths to measure the pulsating flow when the intake and exhaust valves are working. As the results of experimental test, the various exhaust geometry were influenced strongly on the exhaust pressure. As the exhaust pipe diameter was decreased, the amplitude and the number of compression wave in exhaust pressure was increased. According to decreasing pipe diameter, the number of compression wave in exhaust pressure was decreased.
This paper presents a theoretical model for the behavior of partially confined axi-symmetric reinforced concrete members subjected to axial load. The analysis uses the theories of elasticity and plasticity to cover the full range of the concrete behavior. Analysis of the elastic range of the problem involves boundary conditions that are defined along a relatively simple geometry. However, extending the analysis into the plastic range involves difficulties that arise from the irregular geometry of the boundary between the plastic zone and the elastic zone, a boundary which is also changing as the axial load increases. The solution is derived by replacing the discrete steel ties with an equivalent tube of thickness $t_{eq}$ and by analyzing the concrete cylinder, which is uniformly confined by the equivalent tube. The equivalency criterion initiates from a theoretical analysis of the problem in its elastic range where further finite element analysis shows that this criterion is valid also for the plastic range of the cylinder material. According to the proposed model, the efficiency of the lateral reinforcement can be evaluated by the equivalent thickness $t_{eq}$. Comparison with published test results of confined reinforced concrete stress-strain curves shows good agreement between the test and the analytical results.
In this study, a experimental method has been introduced for the various exhaust pipe geometry of 4-stroke single cylinder engine. The main experimental parameters are the variation of exhaust pipe diameters and lengths, to measuring the pulsating flow when the intake and exhaust valves are working. When the pipe diameter was increase, the second amplitude was increased.
The aim of this work was to investigate the combustion and nanoparticle emission characteristics of premixed charge compression ignition (PCCI) combustion at various test conditions using a single cylinder common-rail diesel engine. In order to create the homogeneity of fuel-air mixture, the premixed fuel (gasoline) was injected into premixing chamber during the intake process and then the diesel fuel was directly injected into the combustion chamber as an ignition source for the gasoline premixture. From these results, it revealed that the ignition delays and combustion durations were gradually prolonged and the peak combustion pressure were increased because diesel fuel was injected early injection timing with the increase of premixed ratio. In addition, as the increase of premixed ratio, total particle number is generally decreased and particle volume also indicated low levels at the direct injection timing from BTDC $20^{\circ}$ to TDC. At further advanced injection timing, total particle number and volume were generally increased
