  • This study confirms that a decadal variation of the SST (Sea Surface Temperature) in the WNP (Western North Pacific) has an influence on the genesis and passage ofa Tropical Cyclone. The decadal mode was obtained by calculating the SST anomaly on the domain $150^{\circ}E-190^{\circ}E$, and $5^{\circ}S-5^{\circ}N$. Such decadal variation was subsequently analyzed to confirm that it is a dominant mode in central Pacific region. Next, after classifying the years into relatively positive years and relatively negative years, the characteristics of Tropical Cyclone in each year, such as a genesis and passage frequency, were investigated. Compared to the relatively negative years, during the relatively positive years, the location of Tropical Cyclone genesis was biased toward South-Eastern region, while the characteristics of the cyclone were more distinct during late season of the year trom September to December than in mid season from June to August. Examining the movement passage through the observation of passage fiequency, there was a significant difference between positive year and negative year in their passages at a 90% confidence level. Moreover, the number of Tropical Cyclone, maximum wind, and life time also showed higher values in positive years than in negative years. These features were confirmed by examining the 850hPa cyclonic flow field, vorticity field, and vertical wind shear field, all of which contribute to the genesis of a Tropical Cyclone.

  • The main purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of precharge electro-cyclone compared to those of innercharge electro-cyclone, experimentally. Especially, the experiment is executed focusing on the improvement of collection efficiency with the charging types including the experimental parameters such as the discharge electrode shapes, applied voltages and gas inlet velocities. Results show that the overall collection efficiency of precharge electro-cyclone is increased over 20% than that of the innercharge type for the same discharge electrode(ø 4 mm, screw rod) in the inlet velocity of 4 m/s, and applied voltage of 30kV. Moreover, the pressure drop of precharge type becomes 10% lower than that of the innercharge type for the inlet velocity of 12 m/s owing to the disturbance of inner vortex flow by the discharge electrode equipped in the center region of cyclone body.

  • Air drying technology was developed as an equipment for reducing of moisture content from wastewater treatment and waterworks sludge cake and reproducing it by reusable matter. Advantage of cyclone type pneumatic dehydrator is simple and excellent drying performance. The air drying equipment was composed to the air ejector which made high-speed fluid field, and cyclone which made circling fluid field. Dewatered cake was crushed at the high-speed zone as first step, and formed with dried powder of sphere shape by the collision between particles at the circling fluid zone. In this study, a CFD analysis has been performed to predict air-sludge particles flow in cyclone and ejector of pneumatic dehydrator. The computational results showed typical Rankine vortex structure which was frequently found in swirling flow phenomena. And the conical type wedge in lower part of a cyclone prevented accumulation of the sludge particles in the cyclone. Therefore, this technology was effective in drying of dehydrated cake of waterworks sludge.

  • Along with dust collection efficiency, pressure loss is a very important cyclone operation factor. A severe rise in pressure loss causes the problem of cost. To solve the problem, the method connecting axial-vane type cyclones in parallel is suggested recently. The axial vane type cyclone dust collector applied in this study is a small portable type. Multiple cyclones are installed in a round type. The basic performance test on the axial vane type cyclone dust collector was conducted. As a result, the cut size reduced along with a rise in the wind velocity of the cyclone dust collector inlet. According to the test on dust collection efficiency, the effect of dust collection began to appear in the range of 3㎛ and dust collection efficiency was greatly improved at 5 ㎛. The noise of the cyclone dust collector well met the fan sound power level of KSB 6361.

  • The effects of structure modification of the vortex finder on the collection efficiency and pressure drop have been investigated. The pressure drop in a cyclone having the two stage vortex finder is higher than that in a conventional cyclone and increases proportionally with the increase of square of gas inlet velocity in both cases. The pressure drop of both conventional cyclone of friction resistance at the boundary layer. The collection efficiency of fine dust has been enhanced by addition of vortex finder in a conventional cyclone and gas inlet velocity showing maximum dust removal efficiency increase to 17 m/s(1.7 times of saltation velocity). Optimum size of two stage vortex finder has been induced to 13 cm I.D$\times$2.6cm Length from the results of overall dust collection efficiency. Previous models were tested for the simulation of collection efficiency of cyclone having two stage vortex finder and the Dietz model predict the similar value with experimental results of the present study.

  • In previous studies, Convex cyclone are proposed to reduce pressure loss which are design cyclone wall with a single continuous curve. Studies about a prediction model for pressure loss and cut-size has focused on conventional cylinder-on-con cyclone. Therefore, the models do not perform well for uncommon design. In this study, a predict model for pressure loss and cut-size depend on cyclone wall curvature are developed. The tangential velocity below vortex-finder is obtained with consideration about friction area and momentum loss on the cyclone wall, and with this the variation of vortex-core and core velocity is obtained. Pressure loss is predicted using a Rankine vortex hypothesis. The prediction results are well agreed with experiments and CFD results.

  • The impact of vertical grid-nesting on the tropical cyclone intensity and track forecast was investigated using the Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) version 3.8 and the initialization method of the Structure Adjustable Balanced Bogus Vortex (SABV). For a better resolution in the central part of the numerical domain, where the tropical cyclone of interest is located, a horizontal and vertical nesting technique was employed. Simulations of the tropical cyclone Sanba (16th in 2012) indicated that the vertical nesting had a weak impact on the cyclone intensity and little impact on the track forecast. Further experiments revealed that the performance of forecast was quite sensitive to the horizontal resolution, which is in agreement with previous studies. The improvement is due to the fact that horizontal resolution can improve forecasts not only on the tropical cyclone-scale but also for large-scale disturbances.

  • The present study introduces and describes the characteristics of the spiral guide and groove body cyclones for the first time. The spiral guide was set inside the cyclone body or the inside of the cyclone body was grooved circumferentially or vertically. Except for the cyclone body, all configurations were the same. The particle collection efficiency for a conventional cyclone (Figure 1) was measured under a series of flow rates ranging from 15 L/min up to 80 L/min, and was compared with that yielded using existing theories. • A uniflow cyclone has simple structure with a single channel in one direction. The one directional particle removal enables the uniflow cyclone to have compact size and low pressure drop. However, it has low collection efficiency compared to conventional cyclones. In this study, the effect of primary geometry on the performance of a uniflow cyclone with swirl vane is numerically investigated for the design of high performance uniflow cyclone. It is found that as the vortex finder diameter is increased, the pressure drop and the collection efficiency are decreased. Also, the same trend is predicted when the vortex finder height is increased. The best collection efficiency is predicted to be obtained when the vortex finder height is equal to the diameter of a cyclone. Reducing the body height by half will increase the pressure drop by 41%. When the body height is decreased, the collection efficiency is first increased and then decreased. The best collection efficiency is obtained when the body height is 4~5 times the cyclone diameter. Overall, the particle collection efficiency is highest when the Dν/D is equal to 0.3. But, the pressure drop is as high as 1592 Pa. Considering both collection efficiency and pressure drop, the best design is when Dν/D, Hν/D, and Hb/D are equal to 0.5, 1, and 5, respectively.

  • Low rise building roofs can be subjected to large fluctuating pressures during a tropical cyclone resulting in fatigue failure of cladding. Following the damage to housing in Tropical Cyclone Tracy in Darwin, Australia, the Darwin Area Building Manual (DABM) cyclic loading test criteria, that loaded the cladding for 10000 cycles oscillating from zero to a permissible stress design pressure, and the Experimental Building Station TR440 test of 10200 load cycles which increased in steps to the permissible stress design pressure, were developed for assessing building elements susceptible to low cycle fatigue failure. Recently the 'Low-High-Low' (L-H-L) cyclic test for metal roofing was introduced into the Building Code of Australia (2007). Following advances in wind tunnel data acquisition and full-scale wind loading simulators, this paper presents a comparison of wind-induced cladding damage, from a "design" cyclone proposed by Jancauskas, et al. (1994), with current test criteria developed by Mahendran (1995). Wind tunnel data were used to generate the external and net pressure time histories on the roof of a low-rise building during the passage of the "design" cyclone. The peak pressures generated at the windward roof corner for a tributary area representative of a cladding fastener are underestimated by the Australian/New Zealand Wind Actions Standard. The "design" cyclone, with increasing and decreasing wind speeds combined with changes in wind direction, generated increasing then decreasing pressures in a manner similar to that specified in the L-H-L test. However, the L-H-L test underestimated the magnitude and number of large load cycles, but overestimated the number of cycles in the mid ranges. Cladding elements subjected to the L-H-L test showed greater fatigue damage than when experiencing a five hour "design" cyclone containing higher peak pressures. It is evident that the increased fatigue damage was due to the L-H-L test having a large number of load cycles cycling from zero load (R=0) in contrast to that produced during the cyclone.
