Monitoring of Corrosion Rates of Carbon Steel in Mortar under a Wet-Dry Cyclic Condition

  • The corrosion behavior of metal covered with mortar under a wet-dry cyclic condition were investigated to apply for the measurement of corrosion rates of reinforcing steel in concrete structure. The carbon steel in mortar having t=3 mm cover thickness was exposed to the alternate condition of 6 h immersion in chloride containing solution and 18 h drying at $25^{\circ}C$ and 50%RH. The electrochemical phenomena of a carbon steel and mortar interface was explained by an equivalent circuit consisting of a solution resistance, a charge transfer resistance and a CPE(Constant Phase Element). The corrosion rates were monitored continuously during exposure using an AC impedance technique. Simultaneously, the current distribution over the working electrode during impedance measurement was analyzed from the phase shift, $\theta$, in an intermediate frequency. The result showed that corrosion rate monitoring using an AC impedance method is suitable under the given exposure conditions even during the drying period when the metal is covered with the wetted mortar.

  • 해양환경 조건 중 건습반복환경인 간만대는 구조물내 철근부식이 가장 빨리 일어나는 것으로 알려져 있다. 때문에 부식촉진시험 방법 중 간만대 환경을 재현한 시험방법이 가장 활발하게 진행되어왔다. 그러나 많은 연구들이 부식임계농도 추정이나 염화물침투해석에 집중되어 있는 상황이다. 본 논문에서는 건습반복조건의 환경을 재현하여 구조물내 철근부식촉진시험과 염화물 침투해석을 실시하였다. 배합에 사용된 재료의 종류를 변수로 시험을 실시하였으며, 철근부식모니터링 방법으로 갈바닉 전위측정법과 반전지전위법을 사용하여 철근부식의 유무를 판단하였다. 부식촉진시험결과 각 배합별로 부식기간이 차이가 났으며, 순서는 OPC > FA > BS > 고강도 순으로 나타났다. 부식촉진시험과 동일한 조건으로 FEM 내구성 해석 프로그램인 DuCOM, RCPT 시험을 실시하여 실험결과 값에 대한 타당성을 입증하였다.

Cut Edge Corrosion of Painted Zn and 55%Al-Zn Coated Steels under Alternate Wetting and Drying

  • Electrochemical study on cut edge corrosion of prepainted Zn coated (GI) and 55%Al-Zn coated (GL) steels has been performed in wet-dry cyclic conditions. Maximum width of delaminated polymer coating from the cut edge for GI and GL specimens was evaluated under wet-dry cyclic conditions. The cyclic tests were carried out for 1000 h by changing of relative humidity, where the salt of NaCl was deposited on the specimen every 48 h. The cut edge corrosion test under NaCl deposit indicated that the delamination of the GL specimen progresses at a higher rate than the GI. The electrochemical corrosion monitoring was also performed under condition of alternate exposure to immersion in NaCl solution and drying at 60%RH and $25^{\circ}C$. On the basis of the results of the delamination tests and electrochemical measurements, the mechanism of cut edge corrosion for GI and GL were discussed.

건습환경중 순 Mg박막의 EIS부식 모니터링 특성 관찰 (Properties Investigation of Corrosion Monitoring for Pure Mg Thin Films under Wet-Dry Cyclic Conditions by Using Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy Method)

  • Magnesium thin films were prepared on cold-rolled steel substrates by RF(Radio Frequency) magnetron sputtering technique.$^{1)}$ The crystal orientation and monitoring of the deposited films were investigated by using XRD(X-ray Diffraction) and EIS(Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy), respectively. The corrosion rates of Mg thin films deposited with different argon gas pressure and substrate bias voltage were monitored by AC impedance method under a cyclic wet-dry condition, which was conducted by exposure to alternate conditions of 1h immersion in 3%NaCl solution and 5h drying at 60% RH and 25$^{\circ}C$. The result of corrosion rate of Mg thin films deposited at various Ar gas pressures and substrate bias voltage under wet-dry cyclic exposure in chloride-containing solutions was showed the following conclusions. At the region I during the onset of the wet cycle, corrosion rate showed relatively low value. The increase in the Corrosion rate of region II is due to the increase in the chloride concentration. Corrosion rate of region III during the onset of the cycle zero and salt crystals remain on the metal surface.$^{2)}$

칼슘 전착처리 후, 시멘트 모르타르 속 철근의 부식속도에 대한 EIS 모니터링 (EIS monitoring on corroded reinforcing steel in cement mortar after calcium electro-deposition treatment)

  • 본 연구는 시멘트 모르타르 속에 매입된 철근이 3wt.% NaCl 전해질 수용액에 8시간 침지 및 대기 중에서 16시간 건조가 반복되는 환경에 있을 때 교류 임피던스법을 이용하여, 10kHz에서 용액저항, 10mHz에서 전하이동저항을 측정하여, 그 값의 차이로부터 분극저항을 계산하여 부식속도를 측정하였다. 부식속도를 제어하기 위해 포화 Ca(OH)2 용액에서 일정시간 전착하여, 그 효과를 관찰하였다. 철근의 부식속도는 용존산소의 확산속도 증가에 의해, 침지보다는 건조 환경에서 가속되었으며, 이것은 모르타르 두께가 얇을수록 명확히 측정되었다. 침지 및 건조 반복횟수가 증가함에 따로, 철근의 부식속도는 부동태에서 Low-middle 상태로 가속되었으며, 그 기준은 다수의 연구자들이 사용한 기준을 사용하였다. 이 기준에 의해 철근의 부식속도가 Low-middle 상태가 되면, 포화 Ca(OH)2 용액에서 -10 uA/㎠ 전류밀도를 사용하여 철근에 전착을 진행하고, 5일간 건조시킨 후, 3wt.% NaCl 용액에서 침지-건조 반복실험을 다시 진행하면서, 부식속도를 측정하였다. 측정결과, 모르타르의 두께가 얇은 경우, 부식속도의 감소를 명확히 관찰하였다. 또한, 전착에 의한 철근의 부식속도 감소는 침지상태에서 보다 철근이 건조과정에 놓일 때, 더욱 크게 측정되었다. 전착처리에 따라 칼슘은 철근표면과 모르타르 계면에 존재하는 Porous rust layer의 void를 메우는 것으로 보인다. 시험체가 건조과정에 놓일 때, 철근표면에 형성된 다공질의 녹층속에 농축된 Ca2+가 침지과정보다 쉽게 CO32-와 결합되어, CaCO3가 형성됨으로서 철근의 부식속도를 더욱 감소시킨 것으로 생각된다.

  • We observed initial rusting process of steel containing Al under wet/dry cyclic condition with NaCl solution film using in situ X-ray diffraction spectroscopy at SPring-8 synchrotron radiation facility. It was found that mass fraction of iron oxides such as ${\alpha}-FeOOH$, ${\beta}-FeOOH$ and ${\gamma}-FeOOH$ varied with Al content. Some kinds of Al oxides were also found at the initial stage of corrosion. Those corrosion products might affect the corrosion process and corrosion rate of the steel.

콘크리트 구조물의 철근 방식성능 실험평가 (An Evaluation of Corrosion Protective Systems for Reinforcing Steel in Concrete)

  • An experimental study to evaluate corrosion protection systems was undertaken with 47 reinforced concrete slab specimens subjected to cyclic wet and dry saltwater exposure. Corrosion measurements included monitoring marcrocell corrosion currents, which are generally accepted in United States practice. Test results indicate that specimens containing 2 kg/$\textrm{m}^3$ of NaCl an exposed to a 10 percent of NaCl show high values of corrosion currents. For the specimens with water repellent membrane currents kept relatively low numerical values, while test specimens with surface corrosion inhibitor hyprotective systems show high values of corrosion currents. No clear indication of the corrosion inhibitor protective systems might be due to the extremely high chloride exposure of the specimens, which has brought the accelerated corrosion. It would be expected that evaluation of the corrosion protective systems need long-term measurement with specimen exposed les chloride but simulating the real condition.
