  • This paper presents the rapid and accurate algorithm for fault detection and location estimation in the transmission line. This algorithm uses wavelet transform for fault detection and harmonics elimination and utilizes least square error method for fault impedance estimation. Wavelet transform decomposes fault signals into high frequence component Dl and low frequence component A3. The former is used for fault phase detection and fault types classification and the latter is used for harmonics elimination. After fault detection, an adaptive data window technique using LSE estimates fault impedance. It can find a optimal data window length and estimate fault impedance rapidly, because it changes the length according to the fault disturbance. To prove the performance of the algorithm, the authors test relaying signals obtained from EMTP simulation. Test results show that the proposed algorithm estimates fault location within a half cycle after fault irrelevant to fault types and various fault conditions.

  • With the growing usage of the networks, the world-wide Internet has become the main means to exchange data and carry out transactions. It has also become the main means to attack hosts. To solve the security problems which occur in the network such as Internet, we import software products of network security elements like an IDS (Intrusion Detection System) and a firewall. In this paper, we have designed and constructed the General Simulation Environment of Network Security model composed of multiple IDSes and a firewall which coordinate by CNP (Contract Net Protocol) for the effective detection of the intrusion. The CNP, the methodology for efficient integration of computer systems on heterogeneous environment such as distributed systems, is essentially a collection of agents, which cooperate to resolve a problem. Command console in the CNP is a manager who controls tie execution of agents or a contractee, who performs intrusion detection. In the Network Security model, each model of simulation environment is hierarchically designed by DEVS (Discrete EVent system Specification) formalism. The purpose of this simulation is to evaluate the characteristics and performance of CNP architecture with rete pattern matching algorithm and the application of rete pattern matching algorithm for the speeding up the inference cycle phases of the intrusion detection expert system.

  • A study is performed for the effective detection method of a fault which is occurred during operation in a small turbojet engine with non-linear characteristics used by unmanned air vehicle. For this study the non-linear dynamic model of the engine is derived from transient thermodynamic cycle analysis. Also for inducing real operation conditions the controller is developed associated with unscented Kalman filter to estimate noises. Sequential probability ratio test is introduced as a real time method to detect a fault which is manipulated for simulation as a malfunction of rotational speed sensor contaminated by large amount of noise. The method applied to the fault detection during operation verifies its effectiveness and high feasibility by showing good and definite decision performances of the fault.

  • For steel structures, fatigue cracks are critical damage induced by long-term cycle loading and distortion effects. Vision-based crack detection can be a solution to ensure structural integrity and performance by continuous monitoring and non-destructive assessment. A critical issue is to distinguish cracks from other features in captured images which possibly consist of complex backgrounds such as handwritings and marks, which were made to record crack patterns and lengths during periodic visual inspections. This study presents a parametric study on image-based crack identification for orthotropic steel bridge decks using captured images with complicated backgrounds. Firstly, a framework for vision-based crack segmentation using the atrous convolution-based Deeplapv3+ network (ACDN) is designed. Secondly, features on crack images are labeled to build three databanks by consideration of objects in the backgrounds. Thirdly, evaluation metrics computed from the trained ACDN models are utilized to evaluate the effects of obstacles on crack detection results. Finally, various training parameters, including image sizes, hyper-parameters, and the number of training images, are optimized for the ACDN model of crack detection. The result demonstrated that fatigue cracks could be identified by the trained ACDN models, and the accuracy of the crack-detection result was improved by optimizing the training parameters. It enables the applicability of the vision-based technique for early detecting tiny fatigue cracks in steel structures.

  • The importance of fast neutron detection for nuclear safeguards purposes has increased due to its potential advantages such as reasonable cost and higher precision for larger sample masses of nuclear materials. Pulse-shape discrimination (PSD) is inevitably used to discriminate neutron- and gamma-ray- induced signals from organic scintillators of very high gamma sensitivity. The light output (LO) threshold corresponding to several MeV of recoiled proton energy could be necessary to achieve fine PSD performance. However, this leads to neutron count losses and possible distortion of results obtained by neutron multiplicity counting (NMC)-based nuclear material accountancy (NMA). Moreover, conventional PSD techniques are not effective for counting of neutrons in a high-gamma-ray environment, even under a sufficiently high LO threshold. In the present work, PSD performance (figure-of-merit, FOM) according to LO bands was confirmed using a conventional charge comparison method (CCM) and compared with results obtained by convolution neural network (CNN)-based PSD algorithms. Also, it was attempted, for the first time ever, to reject fake neutron signals from distorted PSD regions where neutron-induced signals are normally detected. The overall results indicated that higher neutron detection efficiency with better accuracy could be achieved via CNN-based PSD algorithms.

  • In this work, a novel reliability approach for combined high and low cycle fatigue (CCF) estimation is developed by combining active learning strategy with least squares support vector machines (LS-SVM) (named as ALS-SVM) surrogate model to address the multi-resources uncertainties, including working loads, material properties and model itself. Initially, a new active learner function combining LS-SVM approach with Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) is presented to improve computational efficiency with fewer calls to the performance function. To consider the uncertainty of surrogate model at candidate sample points, the learning function employs k-fold cross validation method and introduces the predicted variance to sequentially select sampling. Following that, low cycle fatigue (LCF) loads and high cycle fatigue (HCF) loads are firstly estimated based on the training samples extracted from finite element (FE) simulations, and their simulated responses together with the sample points of model parameters in Coffin-Manson formula are selected as the MC samples to establish ALS-SVM model. In this analysis, the MC samples are substituted to predict the CCF reliability of turbine blades by using the built ALS-SVM model. Through the comparison of the two approaches, it is indicated that the reliability model by linear cumulative damage rule provides a non-conservative result compared with that by the proposed one. In addition, the results demonstrate that ALS-SVM is an effective analysis method holding high computational efficiency with small training samples to gain accurate fatigue reliability.

  • In the GPS/DR integrated system, the GPS position(or velocity) is used to compensate the DR output and to calibrate errors in the DR sensor. This synergistic relationship ensures that the calibrated DR accuracy can be maintained even when the GPS signal is blocked. Because of the observability problem, however, the DR sensors are not sufficiently calibrated when the vehicle speed is low. This problem can be solved if we use a multi-antenna GPS receiver for attitude determination instead of conventional one. This paper designs a two-antenna GPS receiver integrated with DR sensors. The proposed integration system has three remarkable features. First, the DR sensor can be calibrated regardless of the vehicle speed with the aid of two-antenna GPS receiver. Secondly, the search space of integer ambiguities in GPS carrier-phase measurements is reduced to a part of the surface of the sphere using DR heading. Thirdly, the detection resolution of cycle-slips in GPS carrier-phase measurements is improved with the aid of DR heading. From the experimental result, it is shown that the search grace is drastically reduced to about 3120 of the non-aided case and the cycle-slips of 1 or half cycle can be detected.

  • The life cycle of Theileria sergenti(T sergenti) in cattle, especially Korean native cattle, was not proved clearly. To find schizont stage in the life cycle of T sergenti in Korean cattle, T sergenti schizonts in the cells of parotid lymph nodes from 10 adult Korean cattle were examined. Lymphoid cells which were separated from these lymph nodes were cytocentrifuged to observe the parasites in the cells. T sergenti schizonts were detected in the cells of lymph nodes of 6 cattle out of them by IFA(Indirect Fluorescent Antibody) test and Giemsa stain. By peroxidase stain, the cells which contain schizonts were proved lymphoid cells. T sergenti schizonts identified by IFA test were able to be restained by Giemsa stain. Also, merozoites were observed in peripheral blood of the same 6 cattle that had schizonts, by giemsa stain, but not observed in the 4 cattle that had not been detected schizonts. As a part of life cycle of T sergenti, schizonts were observed in the lymphoid cells of Korean cattle.

  • Using the life cycle cost concept, optimum maintenance and retrofit planning for reliable seismic performance is suggested the overall life cycle cost to be minimized including the initial cost, the costs of inspection, repair, and failure. Limit states of the bridges are defined. And failure probabilities are computed through crossing theory. The effect of maintenance and retrofit is represented using the probability of damage detection and event tree analysis. Optimization of maintenance and retrofit planning method proposed from this research was applied to numerical examples. The analysis incorporates the acceleration and site conditions prescribed in the code, and the quality of inspection methods.
