  • The adsorption of cyanide ion on the gold electrode has been investigated by the subtractively normalized interfacial Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (SNIFTIRS). The observations made by SNIFTIRS were consistent with those obtained by the polarization modulated Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. According to the surface selection rule, cyanide ion appeared to adsorb on gold via either carbon or nitrogen lone pair electrons assuming a perpendicular orientation with respect to the metal surface. The possibility of presence of bridge-bound species seemed very infeasible. From the ab initio quantum mechanical calculation, adsorbate-to-metal bonding appeared to occur mainly via the $5{\sigma}$ donation from carbon to Au.

  • Gold plating is used as a coating of connector in printed circuit boards, ceramic integrated circuit packages, semiconductor devices and so on, because the film has excellent electric conductivity, solderability and chemical properties such as durability to acid and other chemicals. In most cases, internal connection between device and package and external terminals for connecting packaging and printed circuit board are electroless Ni-P plating followed by immersion Au plating (ENIG) to ensure connection reliability. The deposition behavior and film properties of electroless Au plating are affected by P content, grain size and mixed impurity components in the electroless Ni-P alloy film used as the underlayer plating. In this study, the correlation between electroless nickel plating used as a underlayer layer and cyanide-free electroless Au plating using thiomalic acid as a complexing agent and aminoethanethiol as a reducing agent was investigated.

  • Internal connections between device, package and external terminals for connecting packaging and printed circuit board are normally manufactured by electroless Ni-P plating followed by immersion Au plating (ENIG process) to ensure the connection reliability. In this study, a new non-cyanide-based immersion and electroless Au plating solutions using thiomalic acid as a complexing agent and aminoethanethiol as a reducing agent was investigated on different underlayer electroless Ni-P plating layers. As a result, it was confirmed that the deposition behavior and film properties of electroless Au plating are affected by grain size and impurity of the electroless Ni-P film, which is used as the plating underlayer. Au plating on the electroless Ni-P plating film with a dense surface structure showed the highest bonding strength. In addition, the electroless Au plating film on the Ni-P plating film has a smaller particle size exhibited higher bonding strength than that on the large particle size.

  • Two pyridinecarboxamide dicyanidecobalt(III) building blocks and two mononuclear seven-coordinated macrocycle manganese(II) compounds have been rationally selected to assemble cyanide-bridged heterobimetallic complexes, resulting in three cyanide-bridged $Co^{III}-Mn^{II}$ complexes. Single X-ray diffraction analysis show that these complexes $\{[Mn(L^1)][Co(bpb)]\}ClO_4{\cdot}CH_3OH{\cdot}0.5H_2O$ ($\mathbf{1}$), $\{[Mn(L^2)][Co(bpb)]\}ClO_4{\cdot}0.5CH_3OH$ ($\mathbf{2}$) and ${[Mn(L^1)][Co(bpb)]\}ClO_4{\cdot}H_2O$ ($\mathbf{3}$) ($L^1$ = 3,6-diazaoctane-1,8-diamine, $L^2$ = 3,6-dioxaoctano-1,8-diamine; $bpb2^{2-}$ = 1,2-bis(pyridine-2-carboxamido)benzenate, $bpmb2^{2-}$ = 1,2-bis(pyridine-2-carboxamido)-4-methyl-benzenate) all present predictable one-dimensional single chain structures. The molecular structures of these one-dimensional complexes consists of alternating units of $[Mn(L)]^{2+}$ ($L=L^1$ or $L^2$) and $[Co(L^{\prime})(CN)2]^-$ ($L^{\prime}=bpb2^{2-}$, or $bpmb2^{2-}$), forming a cyanide-bridged cationic polymeric chain with free $ClO_4{^-}$ as the balance anion. The coordination geometry of manganese(II) ion in the three one-dimensional complexes is a slightly distorted pentagonal-bipyrimidal with two cyanide nitrogen atoms at the trans positions and $N_5$ or $N_3O_2$ coordinating mode at the equatorial plane from ligand $L^1$ or $L^2$. Investigation over magnetic properties of these complexes reveals that the very weak magnetic coupling between neighboring Mn(II) ions connected by the diamagnetic dicyanidecobalt(III) building block. A best-fit to the magnetic susceptibility of complex ${\mathbf}{1}$ leads to the magnetic coupling constants $J=-0.084(3)cm^{-1}$.

  • The recovery of gold in cyclone type electrolytic cell was conducted from solution for stripping gold of PCB by cyanide. The electrolytic recovery behaviors of gold was investigated by reaction time and addition of electrolytic sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and gold plating additive (KG-120). Because the electrolysis generated NaOCl reacted with the cyanide in the leachate by alkaline chlorination, more than 99% of the cyanide was removed at a $NaOCl(g)/CN^-(g)$ ratio of 1.0. When NaOCl was added during the recovery of the gold from cyanide leachate in the cyclone electrolytic cell, the recovery of gold was 98% at the ratio of $NaOCl(g)/CN^-(g)$ from 0.5 to 2.5 in 480 minutes and decreased rapidly over the ratio of 3.0. Gold was recovered more than 99% by adding 1.5 and 4.5%(v/v) of KG-120 with NaOCl in 480 minutes. In particular, when the concentration of KG-120 was 3.5 and 4.5%(v/v), more than 96% of gold was recovered within 240 minutes and the initial recovery rate was relatively faster. The optimum concentration of KG-120 is 3.5%(v/v) considering the economic feasibility and efficiency.

  • Polyphenol oxidase was purified from acetone powder extract of the root of Ixeris sonchifolia. The enzyme obtained by ammonium sulfate fractionation and sephadex G-200 gelfiltration gave 51-fold purification over the crude extract. The purified enzyme showed activity toward chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid and pyrocatechol. The kinetics of thermal inactivation of the enzyme followed first-order reaction. Potassium cyanide and cysteine were potent inhibitors.

  • Aromatic aldehydes are efficiently self-condensed into $\alpha$-hydroxy carbonyl compounds by polystyrene-supported ammonium cyanide as an excellent organocatalyst in C-C bond formation. The reaction proceeds in water under mild reaction conditions. The polymeric catalyst can be easily separated by filtration and reused several times without appreciable loss of activity.
