  • In this study, optimum designs of the air-bearing surface (ABS) are achieved using the reduced basis concept which can effectively reduce the number of design variables without cutting down on the design space. Even though the optimization method is easier and more applicable to handle than the trial-and-error method, its efficiency is largely dependent on the number of the design variables. Hence, the reduced basis concept is applied, by which the desired design can be defined as a linear combination of basis designs. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed approach by obtaining the optimum solutions of the sliders whose target flying heights are 25, 20, and 15nm.

  • In this study, the static and dynamic characteristics of turning process was modelled and the analytic realization of regen-erative chatter mechanism was discussed. In this regard, we have discussed on the comparative assessment of recursive times series modeling algorithms that can represent the machining process and detect the abnormal machining behaviors in precision turning operation. In this study, simulation and experimental work were performed to show the malfunction behaviors. For this purpose, new Recursive Extended Instrument Variable Method(REIVM) was adopted for the on-line system identification and monitoring of a machining process. Also, we can apply REIVE algorithms in real process for the detection of chatter frequency and dynamic property and analyze the stability lobe of the system by changing a parameter of cutting dynamics in regenerative chatter mechanics, if it is stable or unstable, Also, The stability lobe of chatter was analysed.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop an effective method for automated deburring of precision components. A high power laser is proposed as a deburring tool for complex part edges and burrs. For the laser experiments, rectangular-shaped carbon steel and stainless steel machined specimens with burr along one side were prepared. A 1500 Watt $CO_2$ laser was used to remove burrs on the workpieces. The prediction of the heat affected zone (HAZ) and cutting profile of laser-deburred parts using finite element method is presented and compared with the experimental results. This study shows that the finite element method (FEM) analysis can effectively predict the thermal affected zone of the material and that the technique can be applied to precision components.

  • The hard turning is a turning operation performed in high strength alloy steels (HRC>30) in order to reach surface roughness close to those obtained in grinding. This is possible because of availability of improved tool materials (polycrystalline cubic boron nitride. PCBN), ad more rigid machine tools. According to many previous work of hard turning mechanism, the maximum temperature of cutting can be raised up to 100$0^{\circ}C$. As the heat generation rate is very high, the thermal displacement of tool holder cannot be negligible. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to analyze effects of high heat generation at CBN tool tip to the thermal displacement of a tool holder in hard turning and finally geometric accuracy. The thermal behavior of a CBN tool holder is investigated by numerical simulation and experiment, and the result shows thermal elongation of microns order is possible during hard turning process.

  • In order to analyze linear motor driven feed system, preliminary studies have been conducted focusing on the performance evaluation of the system based on the various combination of control gain along with acceleration. Tentative simulation revealed that due to the complexity of control system reduced number of control condition is recommended. Actual machining process with conventional feed system using endmill tool was employed as a preliminary study. Several sensing methods including AE, acceleration sensors and tool dynamometer were used. Results revealed the consistency in AE and cutting resistance. There were inconsistent empirical results in accelerometer probably due to the insensitivity of the sensor signal with respect to the experimental system

  • In this paper, we propose new algorithm to minimize the total cost of overall system in WDM ring networks. The cost of system includes the number of SONET ADMs as well as the number of wavelength. As optical technologies and WDM components are developed, the dominant cost of system is the number of SONET ADMs which is electronic equipment. To reduce the number of SONET ADMs in nonuniform traffic, we propose two algorithms one is the algorithm to construct full circles as many as possible to minimize gaps by cutting and combining the connections. The other is the algorithm to groom circles Into a wavelength to share the maximum number of nodes. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is superior to conventional algorithm in nonuniform traffic

  • Burr makes troubles on manufacturing process due to of deburring cost, quality of products and automation. This paper described the results of experimental study on the influence of the cutting parameters on the formation of exit burrs in face milling. Using the results of experimental study, we classified the burr type and developed data bases to predict burr formation result. This program will be used to predict burr type and geometry at a specified location. Simulation results on deformation strain and temperature are also available. Also algorithm which calculate the exit angle is proposed.

  • In this paper we deal with tool interference problem in the case of compound surface machining. A new tool interference detection and correction method based on the envelope of the tool path is suggested to identify and correct the tool interference - not only within the local path of tool movement, but also outside of the tool path. Therefore, the developed strategy can be used to check the possible interference in any region of the surface. In order to analyze quantitatively the milled surface error produced by the tool interference, improved surface prediction model is also suggested in cutting process by general cutters. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated through simulation study.

  • This paper presents an overview of automated robotic system for skull drilling, which is performed to access for some neurosurgical interventions, such as brain tumor resection. Currently surgeons use automatic-releasing cranial perforators. The drilling procedure must be performed very carefully to avoid penetration of brain nerve structures; however failure cases are reported. The presented prototype system utilizes both preoperative and intraoperative information. Preoperative CT image is used for robot path planning. A NeuroMate robot with a six-DOF force sensor at the end effector is used for intraoperative operation. Intraoperative cutting force from the force sensor is the key information to revise an initial registration and preoperative path plans. Some possibilities are verified by path simulation but cadaver experiments are required for validation of this prototype.
