  • This paper describes a method of calculating the feedrate for the constant cutting speed at a CL-point in 5-axis machining. Unlike 3-axis machining, 5-axis machining has the flexibility of the tool motions due to two rotation axes. But the feedrate at joint space differs from the feedrate at a tool tip(the CL-point) of the 3D Euclidean space for the tool motions. The proposed algorithm adjusts the feedrate based on 5-axis NC data, the kinematics of a machine, and the tool length. The following calculations is processed for each NC block to generate the new feedrate; 1) calculating the moving distance at the CL-point, 2) calculating the moving time by the given feedrate, 3) calculating the feedrate of each axis, 4) getting the new feedrate. The proposed algorithm was applied to a 5-axis machine which had a tilting spindle and a rotary table. Totally, the result of the algorithm reduced the machining time and smoothed the cutting-load by the constant cutting speed at the CL-point.

  • In the past, prism patterns have been linear triangular shapeswith a $90^{\circ}$ angle; however, new micro prism patterns having acute angles or obtuse angles have recently been the subject of demandin the display, lighting and photovoltaic industries. Micro-cutting experiments for micro-prism patterns having $60^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$, and $120^{\circ}$ angles on an electroplated Ni mold were performed and it was found in this study that the specific cutting resistance increased with a decrease in the tool angles (prism pattern angles). The cause of this variation had been thought to be the increase of the ploughing force due to tip rounding and the friction force due to the edge effect. However, the depth of the cut was large enough that it was possible to neglect these effects. Therefore, this study introduced the concept of representative stress of indentation. The measured stress was varied according to the indentation depth eventhoughthetestedspecimenswereidentical ; the varied stress was termed the representative stress. According to indentation theory, the strain that the Ni mold experienced increased with a decrease in the tool angle. Based on the stress-strain relationship, higher strain means higher stress and higher specific cutting resistance. Therefore, the specific cutting resistance was higher at smaller tool angles that had higher strain and stress.

  • In the present paper are calculated and compared the stresses on the normal tools and the restricted tools which have three various rake angles by Least Square Method. The results obtained are summerized as follows. The tool displacement at rake angle .alpha. = 12 .deg. and .alpha. = 0 .deg. is positive value in the principal cutting direction and negative value in the feed direction. At rake angle .alpha. = -12 .deg. the displacement is negative value in both of directions. The principal stress of the restricted and normal tool is maximum at the tip of the tool, the shear stress is maximum after a certain distance from the tip. The result of FEM and P.E method shows that in the range of rapid decreasing of normal stress of the tool edge, the shear stress is maintaining a certain value. This is due to the friction characteristic of the chip.

  • The marine medium-speed diesel engines are operated by two methods; one is the electric motors, and the other air starting motors. Even though air starting motor is dependent of the engine types and sizes, it has been widely used in this area due to its simplicity, convenience and reliability. However most of them are currently imported from overseas due to the lack of the cutting-edge technology in terms of design and manufacturing. Therefore, from the point of this view, the air starting motor needs to be produced by our own techniques. The purpose of this paper is to give the designing parameters in order to make a proper "Air Starting Motor" using CFD. The aerodynamic approaches were given to understand the internal flow characteristics of the air starting motor. In addition, we have carried out the effects of tip clearance. In the calculations the tip clearance of air starting motor has been varied between 0% and 5.7% of blade span.

  • So far,in deep drilling process there are several manufacturing problems such as hole deviation, hole over size, circularity, straightness and surface roughness. Whit regard to these problems, we atudied the abrasion process on carbided tip of BTA drill and got the follow test results through the abrasion characteristic test and analysis on cutting mechanism for the drill tooth and guide pad. 1) In SM55C drilling process, the most stable and reasonable drilling speed range for optmum abrasion characteristic of drill tooth was 60m.min. 2) The total drilling torque was about 60kg .deg.cm on condition drilling speed 60m/min and 0.15mm/rev. These results show that the theoretical burnising torque is well accord with the tested torque which is working on guide pad.

  • In the previous paper, part I, the principal stresses were investigated on the normal tools and the workpieces whose materials were the same epoxy resin. In this paper, are measured and compared the stresses on the normal tools and restricted tools which have three various rake angles. Each restricted tool above has the same restricted angle. The workpieces used in this experiment are made of high quality lead. The photoelastic measuring device is attached to the saddle of the lathe and carried at the same speed as the cutting tool is feeded. The results obtained are summarized as follows; The shear stresses on the tip of the restricted tools of the rake angle .alpha.=12.deg. and .alpha.=0.deg. are less than those of normal tools. But, for the rake angle .alpha.=-12.deg., the former is greater than the latter. The result of photoelastic method shows that in the range of rapid decreasing of normal stress on the tool edge, the shear is maintaining a certain value.

  • Honing, lapping, polishing and superfinishing are applied for a precision machining to finish the metal surface, but these precision machining are micro-cutting by hard and micro-abrasive grains. Frictional machining is the new method to finish mirrorlike surface without using those abrasive grains. The frictional machining produces high pressure and high temperature instantly by compressing a tool material against the metal surface in sliding motion. The metal surface is given plastic deformation and plastic flow by the above mentioned frictional motion, but the surface roughness of the metal surface is influenced by physical and chemical reaction in surrounding atmosphere. Therefore, the atmosphere around the metal optimum atmosphere in the frictional machining. The part 1 of the study was performed in liquid atmospheres. Diesel oil, lubricant, grease, lard oil, bean oil and cutting fluid were used as such atmospheres. Medium carbon steel SM 50 C was used as a workpiece and ceramic tip was applied as a frictional tool. The result of the experiment showed characteristic machining conditions to generate the best surface roughness in each atmospheres.

  • Recently, the use of assembled-type drills as environmentally friendly products has expanded because the shanks of drills can be reused by replacing the tip when the tools are worn or cut. In addition to their precision and endurable stiffness with respect to the cutting force, assembled-type drills need no stricture because of thermal deformation, which makes replacement easily. In this study, we developed novel assembled-type drills and compared their characteristics, such as the precision, stiffness, and thermal deformation, with those of conventional drills. The new drills exhibited a precision over IT 8 class and no changes in dimensions due to thermal deformation, such that we can change the assembly easily with durability.

  • Transparent and hard materials such as sapphire are used for many industrial applications as optical windows, hard materials on mechanical contact against abrasion, and substrate materials for opto-electronic semiconductor devices such as blue LED and blue LD etc. The materials should be cut along the proper shapes possible to be used for each application. In case of blue LED, the blue LED wafer should be cut to thousands of blue LED pieces at the final stage of the manufacturing process. The process of cutting the wafer is usually divided into two steps. The wafer is scribed along the proper shapes in the first step. It is inserted between transparent flexible sheets for easy handling. And then, it is broken and split in the next step. Harder materials such as diamonds are usually used to scribe the wafer, while it has a problem of low depth of scribing and abrasion of the harder material itself. The low depth of scribing can induce failure in breaking the wafer along the scribed line. It was also known that the expensive diamond tip should be replaced frequently for the abrasion. (omitted)
