Cutting efficiency of apical preparation using ultrasonic tips with microprojections: confocal laser scanning microscopy study

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to compare the cutting efficiency of a newly developed microprojection tip and a diamond-coated tip under two different engine powers. Materials and Methods: The apical 3 mm of each root was resected, and root-end preparation was performed with upward and downward pressure using one of the ultrasonic tips, KIS-1D (Obtura Spartan) or JT-5B (B&L Biotech Ltd.). The ultrasonic engine was set to power-1 or -4. Forty teeth were randomly divided into four groups: K1 (KIS-1D / Power-1), J1 (JT-5B / Power-1), K4 (KIS-1D / Power-4), and J4 (JT-5B / Power-4). The total time required for root-end preparation was recorded. All teeth were resected and the apical parts were evaluated for the number and length of cracks using a confocal scanning micrscope. The size of the root-end cavity and the width of the remaining dentin were recorded. The data were statistically analyzed using two-way analysis of variance and a Mann-Whitney test. Results: There was no significant difference in the time required between the instrument groups, but the power-4 groups showed reduced preparation time for both instrument groups (p < 0.05). The K4 and J4 groups with a power-4 showed a significantly higher crack formation and a longer crack irrespective of the instruments. There was no significant difference in the remaining dentin thickness or any of the parameters after preparation. Conclusions: Ultrasonic tips with microprojections would be an option to substitute for the conventional ultrasonic tips with a diamond coating with the same clinical efficiency.

SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPIC STUDY ON THE EFFICACY OF ROOT CANAL WALL DEBRIDEMENT OF ROTARY NI-TI INSTRUMENTS WITH DIFFERENT CUTTING ANGLE (엔진 구동형 니켈-타이타늄 합금파일의 절삭각에 따른 근관성형 효과에 관한 전자현미경적 연구)

  • The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the effects of root canal cleanness following two Ni-Ti rotary instruments with different rake angle. Thirty-six sound, extracted human premolars with single root were randomly divided into three groups. The used rotary instruments were HEROShaper (Group 1, Micro-Mega, Besancon, France, n=12) and ProFile (Group 2, Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland, n=12). Control group (n=12) was only extirpated with barbed broach (Mani, Matsutani Seisakusho Co., Japan) Group 1 & 2 teeth were prepared to a #40/.04 taper at the apex followed by 1 mm using crown-down technique. After canal preparation and frequent irrigation with 5.25% sodium hypochlorite, the roots split longitudinally into a bucco-lingual direction. Root halves were cross-sectioned in apical third portion again. All root specimens were processed for SEM investigation and photographed. Separate evaluations by one endodontist were undertaken for smear layer on prepared walls with a five score-index for each using reference photograph in root halves. The penetration depth of smear layer into dentinal tubules was also estimated in the other halves. Following results were obtained: 1. Smear layer was observed on all the prepared walls with two experimental groups except control group. 2. Smear layer characteristics in two experimental groups; 1) HEROShaper group showed snowy, dusty appearance and were shown open dentinal tubuli on the prepared walls of almost specimens, and the thickness of smear layer covering onto dentinal surfaces was within 1-2 ${\mu}m$ in a few specimens. 2) ProFile group showed shiny, burnished appearance and complete root canal wall covered by a homogenous smear layer with no open dentinal tubuli in all specimens. The penetration of smear layer into dentinal tubules was found in all specimens and the thickness was at 2-4 ${\mu}m$ in all specimens. These results demonstrated that a completely clean root canal could not be achieved regardless of positive or negative rake angle, which is in accordance with the majority of previous studies on root canal cleanliness In conclusion, through irrigation with antibacterial solutions or chelating agents is recommended to remove the smear layer on prepared canal wall in spite of Ni-Ti instrumentation.

  • The purpose of this study was to roughness on the polished surface of visible light composite resins and was to observe the polished surfaces under Scanning Electrom Microscope(ISI DS 130 AKASHI Co. JAPAN). The surface roughness tester(Surfcom 700A Seimtsu profilometer Tokyo, Japan) was used to measure roughness of polished surfaces. In this study, 5 brands of visible of composite resins were examined, Pyrofile light bond Anterior Lite fil anterior Photo clearfil anterior & posterior Palfique light Anterior and posterior Silux Anterior. White point, Silicure point, Super snap Sof-Lex medium disk as cutting instrument, and celluloid matrix were used. The results obtained were as follows. 1. The Celluloid matrix produced the smoothest surfaces. 2. The surfaces made by Soflex medium disk was smoother than the surfaces made by any other polishing instruments. 3. The values of surface roughness made by White point, Silicon point and Super snap were similer. 4. Palfique light (AP) visible light composite resin showed the smoothest surface after polishing with Silicone point, Super snap disk and Soflex mediuem disk in all tested materials.

  • The purpose of this study was to measure roughness on the polished surfaces of composite resin, and was to observe the polished surfaces under Scanning Electron Microscope. White point, Silicone point, Super snap, and Sof-Lex medium disc as cutting instrument, and celluloid matrix were used. The results obtained were as follows. 1) The celluloid matrix produced the smoothest surfaces. 2) Microrest composite resin had smoother surface than any other composite resins after polishing. 3) The values of surface roughness made by White point, Silicon point and Super snap were similar. 4) The surfaces made by Sof-Lex medium disc was smoother than the surfaces made by any other polishing instruments.

  • Introduction: The aim of this paper is to discuss the mechanical and geometric features of Nickel-titanium (NiTi) rotary files and its clinical effects. NiTi rotary files have been introduced to the markets with their own geometries and claims that they have better ability for the root canal shaping than their competitors. The contents of this paper include the (possible) interrelationship between the geometries of NiTi file (eg. tip, taper, helical angle, etc) and clinical performance of the files as follows; - Fracture modes of NiTi rotary files - Non-cutting guiding tip and glide path - Taper and clinical effects - Cross-sectional area and clinical effects - Heat treatments and surface characteristics - Screw-in effect and preservation of root dentin integrity - Designs for reducing screw-in effect Conclusions: Based on the reviewed contents, clinicians may have an advice to use various brands of NiTi rotary instruments regarding their advantages which would fit for clinical situation.

  • European spruce and maple were to be estimated as raw material of violin family instruments with linear modal analysis to provide the information data for the design of their bodies. Wood specimens cut in different direction were excited by impact hammer to measure the resonant frequency with typical vibrational modes. In spite of lower density than maple, European spruce showed the excellent acoustical properties with higher resonant frequency. And edge-grained spruce had more even frequencies than flat-grained ones to be more acceptable as front plate of violin. Resonant frequency was positively correlated with wood density of each specimen and the coefficients of edge-grained specimens were higher than those of flat-grained specimens of both wood species.

Assessment of Microbial Quality on the Preparation of Stir-Fried Dried-Shrimp with Garlic stems in the Meal Service Operation for the Elderly (노인급식에서 제공되는 마늘쫑 새우 볶음의 미생물학적 품질평가)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify HACCP-based CCP and CP from the microbial quality assessment on the process of side dish (stir-fried dried-shrimp with garlic stems) production in the meal service operation for the elderly. Total plate counts (TPC) of fresh garlic stalks were $7.80{\times}10^{3}$ CFU/g and they were above the standard value of microbial growth potential. The TPC, Coliform and E.coli were not detected in the dried shrimps. The TPCs after rinsing and slicing the garlic stems were $2.5{\times}10^{2}$ CFU/g and $5.5{\times}10^{2}$ CFU/g, respectively. The TPC number of cook’s hand and cutting board were also exceeded the standard limit with values of $2.2{\times}10^{2}$ CFU/g and $10.0{\times}10$ CFU/g, respectively. However, the TPC, Coliform and E.coli were not detected in the other cooking instruments. The identified CCP in inspection step was fresh garlic stems and that of prepreparation step was slicing the stems after blanching. Cook’s hand and cutting board were also verified as CCP and the other steps in cooking process and utensils tested were identified as CP’s. These result’s suggest that it is important to control the microbial contamination of raw materials at purchasing step and the sanitary education program should be developed for the employees for continuous supplement of safe and sound meal service for the elderly.

NIRS Calibration Equation Development and Validation for Total Nitrogen Contents Field Analysis in Fresh Rice Leaves (벼 생엽의 질소함량 현장분석을 위한 NIRS 검량식 개발 및 검증)

  • This study was evaluated high end research grade Near Infrared Reflectance Spectrophotometer (NIRS) to field grade multiple Near Infrared Reflectance Spectrophotometer (NIRS) for rapid analysis at fresh rice leaf at sight with 238 samples of fresh rice leaf during year 2012, collected Jeollabuk-do for evaluate accuracy and precision between instruments. Firstly collected and build database high end research grade NIRS using with 400 nm ~ 2500 nm during from year 2003 to year 2009, seven years collected fresh rice leaf database then trim and fit to field grade NIRS with 1200 nm ~ 2400 nm then build and create calibration, transfer calibration with special transfer algorithm. The result between instruments was 0.005% differences, rapidly analysis for chemical constituents, Total nitrogen in fresh rice leaf within 5 minutes at sight and the result equivalent with laboratory data. Nevertheless last during more than 8 years collected samples for build calibration was organic samples that make differentiate by local or yearly bases etc. This strongly suggest population evaluation technique needed and constantly update calibration and maintenance calibration to proper handling database accumulation and spread out by knowledgable control laboratory analysis and reflect calibration update such as powerful control center needed for long lasting usage of fresh rice leaf analysis with NIRS at sight. Especially the agriculture products such as rice will continuously changes that made easily find out the changes and update routinely, if not near future NIRS was worthless due to those changes. Many research related NIRS was shortly study not long term study that made not well using NIRS, so the system needed check simple and instantly using with local language supported signal methods global distance (GD) and neighbour distance (ND) algorithm. Finally the multiple popular field grades instruments should be the same results not only between research grade instruments but also between multiple field grade instruments that needed easily transfer calibration and maintenance between instruments via internet networking techniques.

Transfer and Validation of NIRS Calibration Models for Evaluating Forage Quality in Italian Ryegrass Silages (이탈리안 라이그라스 사일리지의 품질평가를 위한 근적외선분광 (NIRS) 검량식의 이설 및 검증)

The result between instruments was 0.000%~0.343% differences, rapidly analysis for chemical constituents, NDF, ADF, and crude protein, crude ash and fermentation parameter such as moisture, pH and lactic acid, finally forage quality parameter, TDN, DMI, RFV within 5 minutes at sight and the result equivalent with laboratory data. Nevertheless during 3 years collected samples for build calibration was organic samples that make differentiate by local or yearly bases etc. This strongly suggest population evaluation technique needed and constantly update calibration and maintenance calibration to proper handling database accumulation and spread out by knowledgable control laboratory analysis and reflect calibration update such as powerful control center needed for long lasting usage of forage analysis with NIRS at sight. Microbial Analysis of Processing and Evaluation of Shelf life of Fried Bean Curd (유부의 가공공정중 미생물 분석과 저장 수명 평가)

  • This study was undertaken to find out distribution and contamination sources of microbes on the processing steps and to estimate quality index and shelf life of fried bean curd. It was necessary that the sanitation for water, processing environment and instruments at digestion, formation, cutting and processes after frying must be controlled and microbial growth at digestion and formation must be inhibited, to process efficiently and to improve shelf life of fried bean curd. It was evaluated that quality indexes as to sensory evaluation, especially texture, mold generation and total viable cell counts will be useful to estimate shelf life of fried bean curd and that shelf life of fried bean curd was 6 days.
