  • We investigated the most effective cutting interval for underwater nutrient removal through cut off the emergent part of hydrophytes at artificial vegetation island (AVR) which was installed for the purpose of water quality improvement in Lake Paldang. We divided the planting area of Phragmites japonica into three parts according to the cutting intervals. The shoot height and relative growth rate of P. japonica, nutrient contents and biomass of cut off P. japonica were measured at each cutting interval. The amount of nutrients which were removed through cut off at each cutting interval was calculated. P. japonica showed full growth, 80% and 60% of full growth before first cut off at three-months, two-months and one-month cutting interval condition respectively. Three-month cutting interval condition showed the largest biomass of cut off P. japonica and one-month cutting interval condition showed the least. However the cut off P. japonica showed the highest content of nutrients at one-month cutting interval condition and the least at three-month cutting interval condition. The amount of phosphorus and nitrogen removal at two-month cutting off condition is the largest among three cutting interval conditions indicating that cut off the emergent part of P. japonica every two months is the most effective to remove the nutrients from water at AVR in eutrophic lakes.

  • An experimental investigation of the machining characteristics of compact vermicular cast iron whose matrix were formulated under two kinds of annealing conditions has been conducted. The various characteristics of the machinability of CA cast iron depending upon its matrix and cutting condition have been obtained from the experiment. The results are as follow. As depth of cut increases, the shear stress slightly decreases in order $P_1, \P_2, \P_3$ which are classified by ferrite matrix of CV cast iron. As depth of cut increases, the normal stress increases, and annealing effect in heavy cutting is smaller than that in light cutting. The cutting energy slightly decreases, as depth of cut increases and the effect of annealing on cutting energy in light cutting is higher than that in heavy cutting. The cutting equation in this study are as follow. $P_1\:\2{\phi}\ + \1.49({\beta} - {\alpha} )=84^{\circ}$ $P_2\:\2{\phi}\ + \1.36({\beta} - {\alpha} )=82^{\circ}$ $P_3\:\2{\phi}\ + \1.34({\beta} - {\alpha} )=79^{\circ}$ Machining constants in this study for $P_1, P_2, P_3$give $74^{\circ} , 66^{\circ}, 61^{\circ}$ Tool wear increases as depth of cut increases, and decreases as ferrit matrix increases.

  • Undercutting using an actuated disc cutter (ADC) involves more complex cutting mechanism than traditional rock cutting does, requiring the application of various new cutting parameters, such as eccentricity, cutter inclination angle, and axis rotational speed. This study presents cutting-edge laboratory-scale testing equipment that allows performing ADC tests. ADC tests were carried out on a concrete block with a specified strength of 20 MPa, using a variety of cutting settings that included penetration depth (p), eccentricity (e), and linear velocity (v). ADC, unlike pick and disc cutting, has a non-linear cutting path with a dynamic cutting direction, requiring the development of a new method for predicting cutting force and specific energy. The influence of cutting parameters to the cutter forces were discussed. The ratio of eccentricity to the penetration depth (e/p) was proposed to evaluate the optimal cutting condition. Specific energy varies with e/p ratio, and exhibits optimum values in particular cases. In general, actuated undercutting may potentially give a more efficient cutting than conventional pick and disc cutting by demonstrating reasonably lower specific energy in a comparable cutting environment.

  • The meachanism for cutting epoxy resins specimens which were specially provided was experimentally investigated to obtain a fine surface finish. the specimens were cut the three-dimensional undrer dry conditions using a lathe. the relationship between the topography of the cut surface due to the change rate of temperature of the cutting condition using sintered carbides (P20, K10, KT150) was investigated. the main results obtained are as follows: 1) The change rate of temperature of the cutting edge is increased in nearly proportion ot cutting speed feed rate depth of cut. 2)The profile of surface roughness were regulated k10 but irregulated P20 KT150. 3) The surface roughness value decreased K10 rather than P20 KT150. 3) The surface roughness value decreased K10 rather than P20 KT 150.4)The cutting resistance increased thrust force rather than cutting force due to the visco-elastic material of epoxy resins.

  • In this paper, three different types of commercial tools -P20, NC123K and ceramic- have been used to cut austempered ductile iron(ADI). In the austempered condition the materials are hard, strong and difficult to machine. Thus, we selected a optimum tool material among three different types of used tools in machining of austempered ductile iron. It was used acoustic emission (AE) to know cutting characteristic for selected tool and investigate characteristic of AE signal according to cutting condition and relationship between AE signal and flank wear land of the ceramic tool. The obtained results are as follows ; (1) The ceramic tool among three different types of tools is the best in machining austempered ductile iron. (2) In case of ceramic tool, the amplitude level of AE signal(AErms) is mainly affected by cutting condition and it is proportional to cutting speed. (3)There have been the relationship of direct proportion between the amplitude level of AE signal and flank wear land of the tool. (4) It was observed that the value of AErms was only affected by cutting speed. Therefore it is possible to in-process detec- tion of ceraic tool's wear in case the initial value of AErms at each cutting speed decided.

  • TiAIN was deposited onto ISO P2O Cutting Insert Tip substrate by FVAS at the substrate temperature of 80$^{\circ}C$. Cutting and wear test have been performed with TiAIN coated and uncoated WC cutting tools, respectively. Uncoated WC cutting tool has been tested under similar cutting condition for comparison. Cutting force and tool wear of coated and uncoated carbide cutting tools were investigated by cutting length. In cutting test, cutting force of the coated insert tip was larger than the uncoated insert tip by tool wear. Configuration and wear of the coated tool were more stable and resistant than the uncoated. In tool life by the tool wear, the coated cutting tool life was rather longer than the uncoated when tested at high speed (V=250 m/min) than low speed (V=200 m/min), Cutting force, tool wear and life were analysised by tool dynamometer amp(3ch) and oscilloscope.

  • The orthogonal cutting method of the nodular graphite cast iron in the lathe turning, whose structure were formulated under two kinds of annealing conditions, has been experimentally studied and the results investigated. The various characteristics of machinabilities of the nodular cast iron, depending upon its structure, have been obtained from the results as follows. (1) As depth of cut increases, the shearing strain decreases and tend gradually to increase with increase of ferrite matrix. (2) As depth of cut increases, the shearing stress slightly decreases for P$_{1}$, but it tends to increase for both of P$_{2}$ and P$_{3}$ under the same condition. The annealing effect in the process of light cutting was found to be greater than heavy cutting. (3) The cutting energy slightly decreases with the increassing of the depth of cut, and the effect of decreasing the cutting energy by the annealing is higer the light cutting than the heavy cutting. (4) The cutting equations as follow. P$_{1}$ : 2.phi.+1.58(.betha.-alpha.)=92 deg. P$_{2}$ : 2.phi.+1.40(.betha.-alpha.)=84 deg. P$_{3}$ : 2.phi.+1.37(.betha.-alpha.)=82 deg. (5) The machining constants for P$_{1}$, P$_{2}$ and P$_{3}$ which are the test-pieces in this study and classified according to the containing quantity of ferrite matrix given respectively in 78deg., 70 deg., and 68 deg. From these it can be known that the machining constants slightly decreases with increasing of the quantity of ferrite matrix contained in the nodular graphite cast iron.

  • The characteristics of tool wear and the machinability in cutting of GFRP have been studied. The wear behavior of carbide insert tools(P20, M10, K10) and Cermet in TiC grade was studied by turning of changing the cutting condition. Machinability could be estimated as the following empirical formula, CT$^{n}$ =W The main results obtained are as follows: (1) Dependence of rate of tool wear on cutting speed; with increases of cutting speed, the rate of tool wear initially increases gradually(1st range), then it increases proportionally to cutting speed(2nd range), and finally the rate is constant(3rd range). (2) When the contact length has a main, effect on tool wear, the cutting speed does nit affect the tool wear. On the contrary, the cutting speed has a main effect on tool wear, the contact length does not affect the tool wear. (3) The order of machinability is K10, M10, P20 and Cermet in TiC grade.

  • It is one of the most important things to determinate optimized cutting conditions which satisfy productivity and cost simultaneously in production and CAPP systems. These days many researchers have figured out the optimizing way for solutions of multi-object function to find the approach methods using algorithm such as genetic algorithm or tabu search, etc., instead of mathematical methods. The main creation of objective function is proposed by empirical method but which is difficult to set it up and to analysis. In this paper, an optimization method of cutting condition is shown using the ANN and GA for the multi-objective function in high speed machining.
