Simultaneous Optimization of Multiple Quality Characteristics in Laser Beam Cutting Using Taguchi Method

  • Taguchi methods have been used for a long time to improve the product quality and process performance of a manufacturing system, Few researchers have applied this methodology in laser beam cutting (LBC) of sheet metals and found the considerable improvement in cut qualities. In all experimental investigations of LBC so far, the objective was to optimize the single quality characteristic at a time. In this paper the simultaneous optimization of multiple quality characteristics such as Kerf width and material removal rate (MRR) during pulsed Nd:YAG LBC of thin sheet of magnetic material (high Silicon-steel) has been presented using Taguchi's quality loss function. The results show the considerable improvement in multiple S/N ratio as compared to initial cutting condition. Also, the comparison of results from single and multi-objective optimization have been presented and it was found that the loss in quality is always possible shifting from single quality to multiple quality optimization.

  • This paper presents the effects of assistant gas pressure on laser cutting. To investigate the effects of assistant gas pressure, pressure measuring system was constructed with good handling and precision at low price. The measured results discussed compare with that of laser cutting of STS304. The assistant gas pressure varied with the variation of distance between nozzle and workpiece. The peak pressure existed at some distance and could be known by using the deviced pressure measuring system. The higher assistant gas pressure helps to remove the dross and the exothermic energy out of the material. The quantity of dross beneath the workpiece decreases and the kerf width narrows at measured peak pressure.

Cutting Technique for Biodegradable Rope using a CW CO2 Laser with TEM00 mode

  • A 23 W continuous wavelength $CO_2$ laser system exited by a high-frequency LCC resonant converter is adapted to cut a biodegradable rope fabricated with polybutylene succinate. As the biodegradable rope consists of three twisted strands, the thickness changes relative to the position of the laser beam and we thus propose a method to determine exact cutting depth. In order to obtain the parameters related to the rope cutting, the experimental and theoretical cutting depths are compared and analyzed for a range of laser heat sources. The melted thickness and groove width of the cut biodegradable rope are also examined. The proposed theoretical cutting depth depends on the incident power and target velocity ratio. From these experimental results, the biodegradable rope with a diameter of 22 mm can be cut with a heat source of 50 J/cm resulting in a melted thickness of 1.96 mm and a groove width of 0.65 mm. The laser system is shown to be perfect tool for the processing of biodegradable rope without the occurrence of raveling.

  • Three dimensional cutting is considered as an equivalent orthogonal cutting through the plane containing both the cutting velocity vector and the chip flow velocity vector in dynamic cutting process. An analytical expression of dynamic cutting force is obtained from the cutting parameters determined by the static cutting. Particular attention is paid to the energy supplied to the vibratory system of cutting tool with two degree of freedom. In this approach, the phase lag of the horizontal vibration of the tool behind the vertical vibration and the direction angle of the fluctuating cutting force is considered in point of stability limits. Chatter vibration can be effectively suppressed by relatively increasing the spring constant and the damping coefficient of the cutting system in the vertical cutting force direction. A good agreement is found between the stability limits predicted by theoretical value and experimental results.

  • New type of rock excavation method using a waterjet system is being developed to secure economic feasibility and to reduce vibrations during excavation. In waterjet rock excavation, overlapping of cutting width is essential for high efficiency. In this study, cutting experiments for granite specimens were performed using abrasive waterjet system according to the overlapping ratio and standoff distance. Based on the experimental results, the granite cutting performance was analyzed according to the overlapping ratio. In addition, removal shapes of the cross-section were analyzed in terms of the cutting depth, width, and volume after waterjet cutting. When the overlapping ratio is less than 58%, rock specimens are partially removed due to the insufficient overlapping ratio. However, when the overlapping ratio exceeds 67%, overcutting phenomenon is observed. For the partial overlapping ratio (i.e., 25~75%), cutting efficiency is increased in the removal volume. This study is expected to be used as the important basic data for determining the optimum overlapping ratio when the waterjet system is applied for rock excavation.

  • High-pressured jetting is now widely used in the advanced cutting processes of polymers, metals, glass, ceramics and composite materials because of some advantages such as heatless and non-contacting cutting. Similarly to the focused laser beam machining, it is well known as a type of high-density energy processes. High-pressured jetting is going to be developed not only to minimize the cutting line width but also to achieve the short cutting time as soon as possible. However, the interaction behavior between a work piece and high-velocity abrasive particles during the high-pressured jet cutting makes the impact mechanism even more complicated. Conventional high-pressured jetting is still difficult to apply to precision cutting of micro-scaled thin work piece such as thin metal sheets, thin ceramic substrates, thin glass plates and TMM (Thin multi-layered materials). In this paper, we proposed the advanced high-pressured jetting technology by introducing a new abrasives supplying method and investigated the optimal process conditions of the cutting pressure, the cutting velocity and SOD (Standoff distance).

  • A field experiment was conducted in order to investigate the seasonal changes of leaf grwoth and related characteristics in three cultivars of orchardgrass; Potomac, Kay and Sumas. The results were summarized as follows: 1. Leaf elongation was increased in a nearly linear phase during first and third cutting stages. It was increased slowly in early 10 days to 15 days after cutting and increased rapidly there-after during the rest cutting stages. In cultivars, Potomac was showed higher leaf elongation than other cultivars during all cutting stages. There was no difference of leaf width within cutting stages, but the leaf width of fall regrwoth was narrow. Sumas had relatively short and wide leaves. 2. Leaf dry weight and leaf area in first cutting stage were larger than others. Leaf area was increased rapidly form 15 days after cutting and leaf weight was increased rapidly from 20 days over all cutting stages. The increase in leaf area and dry weight were slow down after 30 days. 3. Number of epidermal cells was increased rapidly after cutting and the rate of increase was slow down after 30 days. In a cross section of leaf tissue, the part of mesophyll was occupied with about 60% of total area and larger area than other tissue, the part of mesophyll was occupied with about 60% of total area and larger area than other tissues. Leaf tissue had a large vacancy at early growth period after harvest and was filled gradually with mesophyll. This result was related to the increase of leaf dry matter.

An analytical expression of dynamic cutting force is obtained from the cutting parameters determined by the static three dimensional cutting experiments. Particular attention is paid to the energy supplied to the vibration of the tool behind the vertical vibration and the direction. The phase lag of the horizontal vibration of the tool behind the vertical vibration and the direction angel of the fluctuating cutting force must be regarded in point of stability limits. Chatter vibration can effectively be suppressed by enlarging the dynamic rigidity of the cutting system in the vertical cutting force direction. A good agreement is found between the stability limits predicted by theory and the critical width of cut determined by experiments.

  • Face milling is required to study cutting process with a view of multipoint cutter. This experimental study mainly deals with the single and multi-insert cutting characteristics using coated tool. Because metal cutting of the single and multi-insert has a large relation to the improvement of productivity, the economic cutting process can be achieved by the analysis of proper metal cutting mechanism. Therefore, machining characteristics of face molling in this paper has been studied by investigating the role of different insert number which is concerned with mean cutting force, the RMS values of AE(acoustic emission) signal, tool life and surface roughness in milling SS 41 and SUS 304. The cutting force and AE signal are monitored to make an analysis of cutting process. The surface roughness of the specimens machined by inserts of different numbers is measured at different speeds, feeds and depth of cut. The width of flank wear is also observed.

  • This work was tamed out to apply a laser welding technique in joining between a Zn coated low carbon steel plate(SECC) and a free cutting carbon steel shaft(SUM24L) with or without W coating. Experiments were carried out and analysed by applying the FD(factorial design)method to obtain the optimum Laser welding condition. Optical microscopy, SEM, TEM and XRD analyses were performed in order to observe the microstructures in the fusion zone and the HAZ. Mechanical properties of the welded specimens were examined by microhardness test, tensile test and twist test. There was no flawed Zn in the fusion zone by EDS analysis. This means that during the welding process, Zn gas could be eliminated by appropriate shielding gas flow rate and butt welding gap. Ni coating itself did not influence on the tensile strength and hardness. However, twist bending strength and the weld depth of the Ni-coated free cutting carbon steel were lower as compared with those of the uncoated free cutting carbon steel. It was attributed to a lower absorbance of laser beam to the shin Ni surface. According to the results of the factorial design tests, the twist bending strength of welded specimens was primarily affected by pulse width, laser power, frequency and speed.
