MOWING PERFORMANCE OF BUSH CUTTER EQUPPED WITH A FIXED BLADE DEVEOPED TO PREVENT BODILY INJURIES IN OPERATION

  • In order to prevent bodily injuries frequently suffered in using bush cutters, especially from spattered stones, we developed a unique new cutting system equipped with a fixed blade on top of the rotary blade, and checked into the mowing performance of the cutter. From experimental test of mowing efficiency and measuring test of physical stress (O$_2$ consumption and heartbeat rates) , the new cutting system with a fixed blade proved that it keeps good cutting performance with lower peripheral speed of the rotary blade(22m/sec), compared to that of ordinary cutting blade, yielding more safety in operation. Weight of the cutter head is, however, heavier than that of ordinary machine by about 70% which increased a physical stress on the operator with slightly faster heartbeat rates. In mowing along edge of concrete wall, the operator enjoyed using the cutter with no anxiety , owing to function of the fixed blade.

  • Spent fuel rod cutting device should cut a spent fuel rod to an optimal size in order to fast decladding operation. In this paper, for developing spent fuel rod cutting device with cutter blade, rod properties such as dimension and material of zircaloy tube and fuel pellet are investigated at first and then, various methods of existing cutting devices used commercially are investigated and their performance are analyzed and compared. This device is designed to be operated automatically via remote control system considering later use in Hot-Cell (radioactive area) and the mdularization in the structure of this device makes maintenance easy. SUS and Zircaloy-4 are selected as cut material used in the test of spent fuel rod cutting device by cutter blade. In order for constructing the high durable cutter blade, various materials are analyzed in terms of quality, shape, characteristic, and heat treatment, etc. and from these results, spent fuel rod cutting device is designed and manufactured based on the considerations of durability, round shape sustainability of rod cross-section, debris generation, and fire risk, etc.

Determination of Optimum Cutter Shape for Peeling Altari Radish (알타리무 삭피용 최적 칼날형상의 구명)

  • This study was conducted to determine the optimum blade shape for peeling Altari radish. To figure out the required peeling force according to various angles of blade and rakes of peeling cutter, two peeling tests such as circumferential peeling and longitudinal peeling of Altari radish were carried out. Based on the pretest results, which performed to investigate the applicability of the optimum shape of cutter and to find out the cutting pattern according to the lapse of days after harvesting the radish, the peeling depth and width of the blade were fixed at 2 mm and 10 mm. From two methods of circumferential and longitudinal peeling test, the angles of rake and blade as cutter shape factors were affected on peeling force. But the peeling speed was not affected on it under the safety speed as 0.2 m/s, without blade vibrating on peeling operation. The rake angle was more effective factor than the blade angle, and the optimum angles of blade and rake were 10$^{\circ}$ and 55$^{\circ}$ respectively. The cutting surface by the longitudinal peeling was more smooth than that by the circumferential peeling. There was no problem in peeling work during 4 days after harvest because the freshness of the Altari radish was maintained.

  • With the recent development of intelligence and automation technologies for construction machinery, the demand for safety and efficiency of road-cutting operations has continued to increase. In response to this, a double-blade road cutter has been developed that can automatically cut roads. However, a double-blade road cutter has a load difference between the two blades due to the ground and wear conditions of the cutting blades. The difference in load between the two blades distorts the direction of travel of the cutter. In this study, a vision sensor-based driving guide technology was developed to correct the driving path of road cutters. In addition, we developed a load-sensing technology that detects blade loads in real-time and controls driving speed in the event of overload.

A Study on the Improvement of Manual Rice Cutters (인력대취검 개량제작시험연구)

  • 1. The field test of our experiment comparing the traditional syckle and the new manually pulled cutter showed that the working efficiency of the manually pulled cutter is about two times higher than that of the syckle. The operator can standerect while using the manually pulled cutter, thus reducing fatigue. Because of the reduction in body fatigue, the operator is able to work more total hours, making the manually pulled harvester three times more efficient than the syckle. 2. The optimum angle for the V-shaped cutter blade varies according to the number of the hiller, but in manufacturing the cutter, the range must be controlled between $35^{\circ}{\sim}45^{\circ}$. 3. The radius of curvature of the V-shaped blade is closely related to the blade angle. The best results were obtained when the radii of curvature were r=32cm with $35^{\circ}$ angle, r=153mm with $45^{\circ}$ angle, and r=220mm with $40^{\circ}$ angle. 4. The hardness distribution test of the blade showed great differences between foreign made and domestic made blades. The heat treatment method must be greatly improved for superior hardness distribution. 5. Although the efficiency of the manually pushed cutter is equal to that of the manually pulled cutter, the manually pushed cutter is not only more expensive to produce but also has a much more complicated structure than the manually pulled cutter. Because of our rural economic conditions, the power harvester which is utilized in foreign countries can not yet be introduced here. Thus, the manually pulled cutter should be popularized in our rural areas until economic conditions will allow us to introduce power harvesters. 6. The use of the manually pulled cutter will make it possible for an operator to harvest an area in only one-third of the time that it would take to harvest the same area with a traditional syckle, and it will make it possible for an operator to earn about 8,000 won for harvesting 10 Jung-bo: such benefits will help in increasing farm income and will contribute to farm modernization.

  • Recently, the development of aerospace and automobile industries brought new technological challenges, related to the growing complexity of products and new geometry models. High speed machining using 5-Axis milling machine is widely used for 3D sculptured surface parts. 5-axis milling of turbine blade generates the vibration, deflection and twisting caused from thin and cantilever shape. So, the surface roughness and the waviness of workpiece are not good. In this paper, The effects of cutter orientation and lead/tilt angle in 5-Axis high speed ball end-milling of turbine blade were investigated to improve the geometric accuracy and surface integrity. The experiments were performed at lead/tilt angle $15^{\circ}$ of workpiece with four cutter directions such as horizontal outward, horizontal inward, vertical outward, and vertical inward. Workpiece deflection, surface roughness and machined surface were measured with various cutter orientations such as cutting direction, and lead/tilt angle. The results show that when 5-axis machining of turbine blade, the best cutting strategy is horizontal inward direction with tilt angle.   • With the recent trend of intelligence and automation of construction work, a double-blade road cutter is being developed that automatically enables cutting along the cutting line marked on the road using a vision system. The road cutter can recognize the cutting line through the camera and correct the driving route in real-time, and it detects the load of the cutting blade in real-time to control the driving speed in case of overload to protect workers and cutting blades. In this study, a vision system mounted on a double-blade road cutter was developed. A cutting route recognition technology was developed to stably recognize cutting lines displayed on non-uniform road surfaces, and performance was verified in similar environments. In addition, a vision sensor protection module was developed to prevent foreign substances (dust, water, etc.) generated during cutting from being attached to the camera.

This investigation presents ecperimental results which show the effects of the blade variables such as types of diamond abrasives, grain size of diamond, concentration, and bond materials on the beavior of te blades. Based on the experimental results an optimum blade condition for the sawing of cubic zirconia was recommended.

  • In the dismantling process of nuclear spent fuels, the spent fuel rod cutting process, followed immediately by the decladding process, performs the cutting the spent fuel rods to a proper length for fast decladding operation. In this paper, we analyzed the chemical compositions, mechanical properties, and physical characteristics for SUS and zircaloy tubes in order to identify the feasibility of cutter-blade type in cutting SUS and zircaloy tubes. It is considered that material, shape and angle, and heat treatment for fabricating the highly durable cutter blade and also it is investigated that the round-shape sustenance of cross-section, amount of debris production, and fire occurrence for measuring the cutting performance on SUS and zircaloy tubes, spent fuel rod cutting device is designed to be operated automatically through the remote control system for use in Hot Cell(radioactive) area and the electro-driven mechanical parts are modularized for easy maintenance. Results from various experiments confirm the efficiency of this device.
