Due to the Japan's Kobe earthquake in 1995, a cut-and-cover tunnel, which is one of subway facilities, collapsed unexpectedly. As a result, also in Korea, seismic performance needs to be secured for the cut-and-cover tunnel and currently, the subway seismic design standard is based on the seismic performance. However, there is no standard for the damage level or stability level of a member for securing the seismic performance, and the definition of multi-level seismic performance is not sufficient. By contrast to this situation, in the Japan's evaluation method of seismic performance, design earthquake ground motion having reflected there into the subway driving stability is clearly defined and the seismic performance required for structures is classified in detail. This study analyzes the Japan's systematic evaluation method of seismic performance for cut-and-cover tunnels of subway.
Wide tunnels, such as those with high filling, can suffer limited applicability and also reduced structural stability. Therefore, to improve these limitations of precast cut-and-cover tunnel segments, this study proposes rib reinforcement of the vaults of the precast segments. Large-sized experiments assess the effectiveness of the various rib-reinforced precast arch cut-and-cover tunnel structures, and compare them against otherwise similar non-rib-reinforced specimens. The results show that the rib-reinforced precast cut-and-cover segments are suitable for building wide tunnels with high filling.

The thickness of the material can be thinned because arch cut-and-cover tunnel has the support mechanism by the axial force, and the ground reaction force due moderate deformation can be expected thereby making it be dynamically advantageous, therefore the arch cut-and-cover tunnel has become more widely used. An important characteristic of the arch cut-and-cover tunnel is that the thickness of the material can be thinned because precast arch type has the support mechanism by the axial force. However, there is a different stress state surrounding the structures between normally excavated tunnels and cut-and-cover tunnels, it should be considered at designing. Therefore, finite element method was carried out to examine the mechanical behavior of the precast arch cut-and-cover tunnel considering construction procedure.

World widely, the occurrences of earthquakes have been increased recently. Speculating from cases of earthquakes in the world, it is reported that damages have been made underground structures like cut-and-cover tunnels, especially on the upper of tunnel with a shallow depth and the backfilled area adjacently by earthquakes. Earthquakes have a tendency to increase recently in Korea but it is deficient in seismic design criteria. In this study, Shaking table test on both soil and EPS blocks was performed to analyze the efficiency of the seismic performance of the cut-and-cover tunnels according to characteristic of backfill materials and embanking material. It turned out to be effective in improving the seismic performance according to analysis of strain and bending stress of tunnel by earthquakes.
The bored tunneling method is generally preferred for urban tunnel construction, However the cut & cover tunnel is still necessary for special conditions, such as metro station and access structures. In some case, deep excavation for cut & cover construction is planed of irregular and unusual shape, as a consequence, the convex and concave corner is often encountered during that excavation. In particular, discontinuity or imbalance of the support structure in the convex corner can lead to collapse, which may result in damages and casualties. In this study, the behavior of the convex corner of retaining structure were investigated using 3-dimensional numerical models established to be able to simulate the split-shaped behavior of convex corners. To improve the stability in the vicinity of the convex corner, several stabilizing measures were proposed and estimated numerically. It is found that linking two discretized wales at the convex corner can effectively perform the control of deformation. Furthermore, it was also confirmed that the stabilizing measures can be enhanced when the tie-material linking two discretized wales is installed at the depth of the maximum wall deflection.
The selected structure for the value engineering review is one section of cut and cover tunnel for Seoul Subway Line 9. The primary focus of the review is on the optimisation of the structures to save cost on the existing Line 9 contracts through variation of the design criteria as it affects the permanent works. This is to be achieved through comparison with design criteria for other selected international subways. Criteria resulting from the review must not compromise public safety and durability for the 100 year design life.

There is a few problems in the preliminary seismic performance evaluation procedure of subway infrastructures, such as cut-and-cover tunnel structures and bridge structures, recently because the characteristics of subway infrastructures are not properly considered in the procedure. In particular, the evaluation procedure of vehicular bridge structures is applied to subway bridges without any modification. Moreover, the present evaluation procedure is lack of both theoretical and empirical backgrounds, which makes the evaluation less reliable. This paper presents problems in the existing preliminary evaluation procedure and proposes possible modification(revision) to the procedure.
Underground structures such as a tunnel have been considered as safer than structures on the ground during earthquake. However, severe damages of underground structures occurred at subway tunnel during 1995 Kobe Earthquake and such damages are gradually increased. In this study, a dynamic behavior of a cut and cover tunnel surrounded by weathered soils is investigated using Mohr-Coulomb Model. Parametric study was carried out for boundary conditions, tensile strength, and earthquake magnitudes. The results of numerical analyses in terms of ground deformations and stresses acting on the lining were quite dependent on the side boundary condition (free or fix conditions) and tensile strength of surrounding soils. The ground was deformed upward at the end of earthquake when the side boundary condition was fixed, whereas residual deformations were not predicted when it was free. When the tensile strength of a soil was set to the same as its cohesion, residual deformation was less than 1cm, regardless of side boundary conditions or input accelerations. In addition to that, stress conditions at the maximum deformation and end of earthquake were within an allowable range and considered as safe. Proper boundary conditions and material properties such as tensile strength are quite important because they may significantly impact on the results of dynamic analyses.

In a performance-based design, the structural safety is estimated from pre-defined damage states and corresponding damage indices. Both damage states and damage indices are well defined for above-ground structures, but very limited studies have been performed on underground structures. In this study, we define the damage states and damage indices of a cut-and-cover box tunnel which is one of typical structures used in metro systems, under a seismic excitation from a series of inelastic frame analyses. Three damage states are defined in terms of the number of plastic hinges that develop within the structure. The damage index is defined as the ratio of the elastic moment to the yield moment. Through use of the proposed index, the inelastic behavior and failure mechanism of box tunnels can be simulated and predicted through elastic analysis. In addition, the damage indices are linked to free-field shear strains. Because the free-field shear strain can be easily calculated from a 1D site response analysis, the proposed method can be readily used in practice. Further studies are needed to determine the range of shear strains and associated uncertainties for various types of tunnels and site profiles. However, the inter-linked platform of damage state - damage index - shear wave velocity - shear strain provides a novel approach for estimating the inelastic response of tunnels, and can be widely used in practice for seismic designs.
