  • Conventionally embedded devices used simple operating system (OS); however, the number of embedded devices using Linux as OS is increasing to keep up with hardware's performance improvement and customer's various needs. While embedded devices using Linux can take advantage of expandability, generality, portability, Linux's flexibility nature may cause undesirable overheads because of its increased complexity. One such overhead makes boot stage optimization essential in most embedded systems, where many features are redundant and possible to be removed or reconfigured. This paper applies well-known software optimization technique for Linux's boot stage to an CLM9722 DTK, measures the results, and studies about limitation of such techniques from hardware dependancy on the standard framework of Linux. The booting time from power-on until completion were decreased by 33% approximately.

  • While demands for express service are rapidly increasing according to recent progress of electronic commerce, express service companies are struggling to take a larger delivery service market share through ongoing improvement in their service processes. Extension of cut-off time for express service centers can provide the express company with increase of total sales, but it may also cause to increase the possibility not to satisfy customer needs due to work delay in the consolidation terminal. Therefore, compromised decision for cut-off time of each service center should be made by taking operation characteristics of the consolidation terminal into account. This study suggests an approach for determining the cut-off time for express service centers according to operational characteristics of the consolidation terminal with the objective of maximizing expected incremental sales. The problem defined in this study can be represented as two successive models; one is an integer programing model in which the best cut-off time for each sales center are determined, and the other is a single machine scheduling model in which a working schedule in the consolidation terminal is obtained. A genetic algorithm is developed to solve the two models simultaneously. Finally, an example problem is carried out to verify applicability and performance of the algorithm with the data set collected from an express company.

  • This study deals with the effects of the extension of terrestrial TV VOD holdback on the viewing behavior focusing on IPTV & digital cable TV. And this study presents the implication by analyzing a time series trend of the digital media service. Thus researcher has analyzed the VOD performance trend of IPTV & digital cable TV, based on the real data of media player's internal fact sheet. First, researcher confirmed that the repetition of the peak value goes to January and August seasonally. Also, it was confirmed that the viewing rate of terrestrial broadcasting companies is affected by the hit drama program. And researcher confirmed that the terrestrial VOD, movie and kids VOD, and terrestrial VOD purchases is falling down by analyzing a time series relationship. Terrestrial broadcasting companies did an extension of the holdback for the purpose of trying to increase the viewership of the broadcast, but it was confirmed that it was reduced both purchasing desire VOD viewing and viewing of the broadcast audience rather. Thus the researcher expect the customer familiar policy of media players in the future.

  • Previous research on smartphone has been focused on personal performance, accessibility, and information gaps in information system quality. In order to analyze the relationship between the use of smartphone information and personal characteristics, this study conducted a survey of 300 tourists at Jeju Airport, by using three variables of self-efficacy, 'impulsiveness and demographic variables (age, sex, education level, etc.) of smartphone use with personal characteristics. In conclusion, self-efficacy and impulsiveness seem to be positively related to the use of smartphone because it seems to be a living environment in which the desired information can be acquired within a desired time. In addition, there seems to be a difference between a mobile native environment in which online and offline boundaries are always connected and an environment in which 40 to 50 digital literacies are connected. This can be interpreted as a result of additional analysis.

  • One of the goals of mass customization is to permit changes in the product to meet specific customer requirements without substantially impacting the cost or delivery schedule. In large assembly manufacturing industries, such as shipbuilding and commercial airplane production, customization takes place by changing components and/or modules, sometimes called interim products. Using shipbuilding as a case study, it is possible to study the impact of such changes using mass customization principles on the schedule. In large assembly manufacturing, mass customization changes would cause changes in engineering time and production time, based on the amount of change required by the customization. This work first proposes a structure for implementing mass customization in shipbuilding and then uses simulation of a simplified, theoretical shipbuilding process to evaluate the impacts of various levels of change on delivery performance.

  • Up-to-date business environment for manufacturers is very complex and rapidly changing. In other words, companies are facing a variety of changes, such as diversifying customer requirements, shortening product life cycles, and switching to small quantity batch production. In this situation, the companies are introducing the concept of JIT (just-in-time) to solve the problem of on-time production and on-time delivery for survival. Though many companies have introduced ERP (enterprise resource planning) systems and MRP (material requirement planning) systems, the performance of these systems seems to fall short of expectations. In this paper, the case study on introducing an APS (advanced planning and scheduling) system based on dispatching rules to a machining company and on finding a method to establish an efficient production schedule is presented. The case company has trouble creating an effective production plan and schedule, even though it is equipped with an MRP-based ERP system. The APS system is applied to CNC (computer numerical control) machines, which are key machines of the case company. The overall progress of this research is as follows. First, we collect and analyze the master data on individual products and processes of the case company in order to build a production scheduling model. Second, we perform a pre-allocation simulation based on dispatching rules in order to calculate the priority of each order. Third, we perform a set of production simulations applying the priority value in order to evaluate production lead time and tardiness of pre-defined dispatching rules. Finally, we select the optimal dispatching rule suitable for work situation of the case company. As a result, an improved production schedule leads to an increase in production and reduced production lead time.

  • This study, by adopting case study methodology, is focused on examining the present state and analyzing the cause of the digital divide, and suggesting policies for bridging the divide, specifically in view of SMEs. We have taken cases of manufacturing companies, visiting and interviewing 18 SMEs in 10 APEC member economies which show sharp difference in usage of ICT. In order to analyze the digital gap among SMEs, we used 5 variables that are composed of computer hardware, computer software, Internet, readiness of ICT, and performance of ICT adoption, while categorizing the cases into low and high tier based on the national ICT index. From a computer hardware perspective, the high tier (0.66) has almost double the number of PC’s per employee, compared with the low tiers (0.34). This gap can be explained by financial availability of low income and high tariff in the developing economies. In the computer software perspective, the SMEs in the low tier had some restrictive use of computer applications such as financial and accounting management and document management, while those in the high tier enjoyed more diversity in the use of applications such as inventory management, sales management, financial and accounting management, procurement management, CRM, and ERP. In view of the readiness of ICT, the difference in ICT infrastructure and financial status between the low and high tier was far wider than any other variables. As a result of ICT adoption, SMEs benefited in view of learning and growth, internal business processes, customer service, and financial affairs. To effectively bridge the digital divide between the low and high tier, actions such as setting up a secondary market of used computers among cooperating developed and developing countries, developing and diffusing good business applications, and building speedy, low-cost telecommunication infrastructures should be taken.

  • This research is for comparison of test statistics for homogeneity when the data is collected based on complex sample design. The survey data based on complex sample design does not satisfy the condition of independency which is required for the standard Pearson multinomial-based chi-squared test. Today, lots of data sets ara collected by complex sample designs, but the tests for categorical data are conducted using the standard Pearson chi-squared test. In this study, we compared the performance of three test statistics for homogeneity between two populations using data from the 2009 customer satisfaction evaluation survey to the service from Gyeongsangnam-do regional offices of education: the standard Pearson test, the unbiasedWald test, and the Pearsontype test with survey-based point estimates. Through empirical analyses, we fist showed that the standard Pearson test inflates the values of test statistics very much and the results are not reliable. Second, in the comparison of Wald test and Pearson-type test, we find that the test results are affected by the number of categories, the mean and standard deviation of the eigenvalues of design matrix.
