The Theoretical Power-factor Correction of a 3-phase Induction Motor using Customer STATCOM (수용가용 STATCOM을 이용한 3상 유도전동기의 이론적인 역률 보상)

  • This paper presents a novel power-factor correction method using customer STATCOM which generally improves the power quality of electric customers. Customer STATCOM detects the reactive currents of a induction motor(IM) and so injects compensation currents which is in 180$^{\circ}$ phase with load currents that the reactive power of IM is compensated. In particular, the paper proposes the general compensation current references in the synchronous coordinate system and makes converter output voltages using space-vector PWM. The compensation effect of customer STATCOM is confirmed through the simulation according to the operation condition of an induction motor (at no load and full load).

  • We fabricated 3-phase 380V 30KVA IGBT-type STATCOM for a medium-scale industrial customer. In this paper, we explain the basic operation of STATCOM. We propose the spec, of STATCOM and its control system and program configuration. Finally, we confirm the waveforms and results of an experiment on a 3-phase RLC load equivalent to the customer.

  • In this paper, a static synchronous compensator(STATCOM), which in general compensates reactive power, is proposed in order to balance the unbalanced loads. Reference values for the compensation of the unbalanced loads currents are determined by 3-phase circuit analysis result. Also the STATCOM control unit is designed considering the proposed compensation scheme for the unbalanced loads. As a result, the effectiveness of the STATCOM for balancing the load currents is verified by computer simulations.

  • Power quality refers to voltage quality and current quality. Voltage quality means supply reliance such as voltage sag, voltage swell. and short-time interruption. Current quality is related to power factor, harmonic distortion, negative-sequence and zero-sequence current. We fabricated Customer STATCOM to improve current quality such as reactive power, harmonic distortion, and load imbalance. In this paper. We summarize the spec, of STATCOM. its hardware configuration, and control system.

  • In this paper, a static synchronous compensator(STATCOM) is proposed in order to compensate both negative-sequence and reactive power. The STATCOM control unit is designed considering the proposed compensation scheme for the unbalanced loads. As a result, the effectiveness of the STATCOM for compensating both negative-sequence and reactive power is verified by computer simulations.
