Phylogenetic Status of an Unrecorded Species of Curvularia, C. spicifera, Based on Current Classification System of Curvularia and Bipolaris Group Using Multi Loci

  • A seed-borne fungus, Curvularia sp. EML-KWD01, was isolated from an indigenous wheat seed by standard blotter method. This fungus was characterized based on the morphological characteristics and molecular phylogenetic analysis. Phylogenetic status of the fungus was determined using sequences of three loci: rDNA internal transcribed spacer, large ribosomal subunit, and glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase gene. Multi loci sequencing analysis revealed that this fungus was Curvularia spicifera within Curvularia group 2 of family Pleosporaceae.

애완용 토끼에 있어서 Curvularia lunata에 의한 각막진균증 1예 (Keratomycosis in a Pet Rabbit Due to Curvularia lunata)

  • 데마슘과 사상균의 일종인 Curvularia lunata가 식물파편으로 오염된 흙에 의해 눈에 외상을 입은 젊은 수토끼(Orytolaggus cunuculis)에서 각막궤양을 일으킨 것으로 밝혀졌다. 이 토끼는 직경 1.5 mm의 각막궤양, 각막부종, 전방축농, 눈물 등을 나타내었다. 각막 소파시료의 KOH 표본과 진균배지에서의 분리를 통해 진균이 확인되었다. 눈의 외상은 진균성각막염의 발생소인이었다. 토끼장의 흙은 Curvularia lunata의 집락을 많이 형성하였으며, 이것이 감염원으로 추정되었다. 이것은 애완용 토끼에서 Curvularia lunata에 의한 안진균증의 최초의 보고인 것으로 판단된다. 외상의 병력이 있는 동물임상의 다양한 상황에서 Curvularia lunata의 병인론적 역할이 연구되어야 함을 강조하였다.

Curvularia trifolii에 의한 크리핑벤트그래스 잎마름병 발생 (First Report of Curvularia Leaf Blight Caused by Curvularia trifolii on Creeping Bentgrass in Korea)

  • 2014년 7월부터 9월까지 경상남도 합천 지역의 크리핑벤트그래스(Agrostis stolonifera) 퍼팅 그린에서 Curvularia trifolii에 의한 Curvularia 잎마름병이 관찰되었다. Curvularia 잎마름병은 크리핑벤트그래스 잎몸에서 수침상으로 시작되어 진한 괴사반점으로 변한 다음, 크기가 확대되어 회갈색 또는 밝은 갈색의 동그란 타원형 병반이 되었다. 반점의 둘레는 자주 분홍 또는 진한 갈색의 경계를 갖으며 둥그런 무리(halo)를 보였다. 괴사 반점들은 융합되어 불규칙한 모양이 되었고 잎끝 또는 잎 전체가 말랐다. 마른 잎몸은 회백색이나 황갈색을 나타냈다. 그 균은 균학적 특성과 16S rDNA 서열 분석에 의해 동정되었다. 병원균의 분생포자는 크기가 짧았고, 보통 3개의 격막을 가졌으며, 곧거나 자주 휘었는데 양끝 세포는 일반적으로 가운데 세포보다 투명하였다. 3개의 격막을 지닌 분생포자의 배지상 크기는 $26{\sim}28{\times}11{\sim}12{\mu}m$였다. 기주에 대한 균의 인공접종으로 병원성이 확인되었다. 본 논문은 C. trifolii가 크리핑벤트그래스에 Curvularia 잎마름병을 일으키는 우리나라 최초의 보고이다.

  • 1998년 병든 화본과작물, 목초, 잔디 및 야생잡초의 잎점무늬와 마름병징으로부터 Curvularia spp. 16균주를 분리하였다. 이들 균주를 균학적 특징을 기초로 동정한 결과 C. cymbopogonis, C. inaequalis, C. intermedia, C. lunata, C. lunata var. aeria, C. ovoidea, C. pallescens C. senegalensis로 동정되었다. 이중에서 C. cymbopogonis, C. lunata var. aeria, C. ovoidea, C. senegalensis는 국내에서 처음 보고되는 미기록종들이다.

  • Fungi are ubiquitous and indispensable components of nearly all ecosystems on earth, including freshwater environments. A survey of fungal diversity in freshwater environments of Korea led to the identification of four unrecorded Pezizomycotina (Ascomycota) species in 2016 and 2017, based on morphology and molecular phylogeny; these included Cladorrhinum australe, Curvularia muehlenbeckiae, Curvularia pseudobrachyspora (Dothideomycetes), and Diaporthe longicolla (Sordariomycetes).

Antifungal Activity of an Alkaloid Allosecurinine against Some Fungi

  • An allosecurinine alkaloid was assayed against spore germination of some saprophytic and pathogenic fungi e.g., Alternaria alternata, A. solani, A. brassicicola, A. brassicae, Curvularia lunata, C. pallescens, C. maculans, Curvularia species, Colletotrichum species, C. musae, C. gloeosporioides, Erysiphe pisi, Fusarium udum, Helminthosporium echinoclova, H. pennisetti, H. spiciferum, and Heterosporium sp. It inhibited mild spore germination of all the fungi tested. Curvularia lunata, Curvularia sp., Collectotrichum sp., C. musae and Heterosporium sp. were most sensitive as complete inhibition of spore germination was observed at very low concentrations.

  • Several fungal isolates were isolated from diseased monochoria(Monochoria vaginalis, weed of paddy field), which has an resistance to sulfonyl urea(S.U.) herbicide, and were evaluated in the laboratory and greenhouse as potential mycoherbicide. Eight fungi, Alternaria sp., Colletotrichum sp., Curvularia sp., Paenicillium sp and etc. were observed in the isolates. Pathogenicity testing were done on the monochorias in the greenhouse. Monochorias were inoculated with suspensions containing conidia of each isolate at the rates of 1.0 ${\times}$ 10$\^$5/ conidia/ml and 0.1% Tween 80 with hand-gun sprayer. Curvularia sp. and an unidentified fungal isolate caused 90-95% mortality on the monochorias 15∼20 days after inoculation. However the other isolates induced slight symptom of disease on the monochorias. In the early stage of disease development sun-burn appearance was shown at the infected site and the last infected leaves and stems were withered to death. Subsequently the pathogenicity on the rice was evaluated with above two effective isolates. From the test an unidentified isolate showed pathogenicity on the rice but Curvularia sp., named as DBB2003, didn't. Now the mass production and formulation using Curvularia sp. DBB2003 are in progress and the field test will be followed. Combination product with Curvularia sp. DBB2003 and chemical herbicide will be more effect to control the monochoria resisted on S.U. herbicide and need to be further tested.

Antifungal Activity of 4',7-Dimethoxyisoflavone Against Some Fungi

  • The 4',7-dimethoxyisoflavone was isolated from the leaves of Albizzia lebbeck for the first time. This flavonoid showed antifungal activity against some plant pathogenic fungi tested in vitro, e.g., Alternaria melongenae, A. brassicicola, A. brassicae, Curvularia maculans, C. pallescens, C. lunata, Curvularia species, Colletotrichum species, Helminthosporium penniseti and H. speciferum. The sensitivity of different fungi to this chemical varied considerably. A. brassicae was most sensitive as complete inhibition of germination was observed in all the concentrations(100 to 1000 ppm) of the chemical. Similar effect on H. speciferum and Curvularia species was also recorded at 500 ppm, whereas H. penniseti did not germinate at 250 ppm. A. melongenae and A. brassicicola also did not germinate at 1000 ppm while 750 ppm was inhibitory to C. lunata and C. maculans. Germination in almost all fungi was significantly inhibited at each concentration in comparison to control except Curvularia sp. and H. speciferum. Use of 4',7-dimethoxyisoflavone to control some plant diseases under field conditions has been suggested.

한국(韓國)에서의 Curvularia에 의한 잔디의 입고병(立枯病)에 관(關)한 분류학적(分類學的) 연구(硏究) (The Taxonomical Studies of Curvularia Blight of Turf (Arostis canina L.) in Korea)

  • On September 1972, a blight disease of turf (Arostis canina L.)was found in a golf link in Seoul Country Club at Seoul, Korea. Yellow circular patches of 15-20cm in diameter were observed and spreaded irregulary to collapse of themselves. The roots of the diseased plants were dark in color and were in a final state of decay. We isolated Curvularia sp. from the diseased plants and investigated the morphological and cultural characters. Its characters as follows: Mycelia septate, branched, hyaline or yellowish brown colored. Conidiophores septate, thin brown, unbranched. $65-270{\times}3.5-5{\mu}$. Conidia clustered at the tips of conidiophores, boat form or slightly curved with 1-5 septa, brown; both end cells hyaline; the third cell much larger than the others. $26.1-33.3{\times}9.5-10.1{\mu}$ (4 cell's conidium). The pathogenicity of the fungus to host plant was confirmed by soil inoculation method. We classified the fungus according to Gilman's method as a species Curvularia geniculata (Tracy and Earle) Boedjin.
