The main problems of computational complexity in object tracking are definition of objects, segmentations and identifications in non-structured environments with erratic movements and collisions of objects. The object's information as a region that corresponds to objects without discriminating among objects are considered. This paper describes the algorithm that, automatically and efficiently, recognizes and keeps tracks of interest-regions selected by users in video or camera image sequences. The block-based feature matching method is used for the region tracking. This matching process considers only dominant feature points such as corners and curved-edges without requiring a pre-defined model of objects. Experimental results show that the proposed method provides above 96% precision for correct region matching and real-time process even when the objects undergo scaling and 3-dimen-sional movements In successive image sequences.
Increasing usage of tank cars and their intrinsic instability due to sloshing of contents have caused growing maintenance costs as well as more frequent hazards and defects like derailment and fatigue of bogies and axels. Therefore, varieties of passive solutions have been represented to improve dynamical parameters. In this task, assuming 22 degrees of freedom, dynamic analysis of partially filled tank car traveling on a curved track is investigated. In order to consider stochastic geometry of track; irregularities have been derived randomly by Mont Carlo method. More over the fluid tank model with 1 degree of freedom is also presented by equivalent mechanical approach in terms of pendulum. An active suspension system for described car is designed by using linear quadratic optimal control theory to decrease destructive effects of fluid sloshing. Eventually, the performance of the active suspension system has been compared with that of the passive one and a study is carried out on how active suspension may affect the dynamical parameters such as displacements and Nadal's derailment index.
In the correction of dental Class III molar relationship in skeletal Class II patients, uprighting of the mandibular posterior segments without opening the mandible is an important treatment objective. In the case reported herein, a C-tube miniplate fixed to the lower labial symphysis and connected with a nickel-titanium reverse-curved archwire provided effective uprighting of the lower molars, without the need of orthodontic appliances on the mandibular anteriors. Using this approach, an appropriate magnitude of force is exerted on the molars while avoiding any negative effect on the mandibular anteriors.
This study purports to analyze equally stressed surfaces in tension-membrane structures through a geometrically nonlinear approach. It adopts the formulation of a 4-node quadrilateral isoparametric plane stress element considering the orthotropic characteristic of membrane textures. Tension structures, which include cables and tension membranes, such as a cable dome initially exhibit unstable conditions because no initial internal stiffness such as bending stiffness is present. Such a structural system requires prestressing to the tension members to attain a stable state. A tension-membrane structure retains a stable three dimensional curved surface as a structural shape. This analytical process for finding the geometry is referred to as Shape Finding Analysis. In order to assess the validity of this study, we examine equally stressed surfaces of saddle and catenary shape shell structures and carry out pertinent stress analyses
A methodology on application of the discrete singular convolution (DSC) technique to the free vibration analysis of thin plates with curvilinear quadrilateral platforms is developed. In the proposed approach, irregular physical domain is transformed into a rectangular domain by using geometric coordinate transformation. The DSC procedures are then applied to discretization of the transformed set of governing equations and boundary conditions. For demonstration of the accuracy and convergence of the method, some numerical examples are provided on plates with different geometry such as elliptic, trapezoidal having straight and parabolic sides, sectorial, annular sectorial, and plates with four curved edges. The results obtained by the DSC method are compared with those obtained by other numerical and analytical methods. The method is suitable for the problem considered due to its generality, simplicity, and potential for further development.
The ability of a robot system to comply to an environment via the control of tool-environment interaction force is of vital for the successful task accomplishment in many robot application. This paper presents the implementation of external force control for two dimensional contour following task using a commercial robot system. Force accommodation is used since a constraint imposed in our work is not to modify the commercial robot system. A linear, decoupled model of two dimensional contour following system in the discrete time domain is derived first. Then the experimental verification of linear control is obtained using a PUMA 560 manipulator with standard Unimation controller, Astek FS6-120A six axis wrist force sensor attached externally to the arm and LSI-11173 microcomputer. Experimentally obtained data shows that the RMS contact force error is 0.8246 N when following the straight edge and 2.3768 N when following 40 mm radius curved contour.
Once the Chip has developed a mixed mode of side-curl and up-curl, it would generally curl to strike the too] flank. The development of the bending stresses and shear in the chip would ultimately lead to chip failure. This paper attacks this problem from a mechanics-based approach. by treating the chip as a 3-D elastic curved beam, and applying appropriate constraints and forces. The expressions for bending. shear and direct stresses are developed through an energy-based criterion. The location of the maximum stresses is also identified and explained for simulated test conditions.
Based on the reinterpretation of the well-known relationship between shear and the rate of change of bending moment in a reinforced concrete beam subject to combined shear and moment loads, the shortcomings of present truss models are discussed. The core of the theory is that a new perspective on the shear strength can be gained by viewing the internal stress filed in terms of the superposition of two base components of shear resistance; arch action and beam action. The arch action can be designed using the simple truss having curved compression chord, while the beam action between the two chords can be modeled using a parallel chord truss with MCFT or RA-STM. The compatibility of deformation associated to the two action is taken into account by employing a characteristic factor a. The new model was examined by the Stuttgart beam shear tests, and the results show that the present approach provides good estimates of stirrup contribution and concrete contributions.
The shape of small or curved object is usually reconstructed using a single camera by moving its lens position to find a sequence of the focused images. Most conventional methods have used a window with fixed shape to test the focus measure, which resulted in a deterioration of accuracy. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a new approach of using a shape adaptive window. It estimates the shape of the object at every step and applies the same shape of window to calculate the focus measure. Focus measure is based on the variance of the pixels inside the window. This paper includes the experimental results.
Rails are continuously exposed to severe environments due to increases in train service frequency, passing tonnage, and speed. Wear is one of the most common types of damage observed on rails. The surface of railsis heat treated to secure safety at critical sites, such as curved tracks or turnouts. Ultrasonic nanocrystal surface modification (UNSM), a new approach for rails, was examined to strengthen the rail surface. The effect of UNSM on the wear resistance of rail specimens was compared with that of heat treatment. Wear resistance was improved after UNSM treatment due to increased hardness and surface compressive residual stress.
