Development of Direct Metal Tooling (DMT) Process for Injection Mold Core with Curved Conformal Cooling Channel (곡선형 형상적응형 냉각채널을 갖는 금형 코어 제작을 위한 DMT 공정개발)

  • The cooling rate and the uniformity of mold temperature, in the injection molding process, possess great influences on the productivity and quality of replications. The conformal cooling channel, which is of a uniform spacing from the mold cavity by the metal additive manufacturing process, receives much attention recently. The purpose of this study is to develop a mold core with a curved conformal cooling channel for a pottery-shaped thick-wall cosmetic container through the hybrid method of direct metal tooling (DMT) process. In this study, we design a mold core that contains the curved cooling channel for the container. A method that divides the cavity is proposed and the DMT process is carried out to form the curved cooling channel. The test mold core, with the curved conformal cooling channel, has been fabricated by the proposed method to confirm the feasibility of the design concept. We show that no leakage is observed for the additive manufactured test mold core, and its physical properties demonstrate that it can be sufficiently used as the injection mold core.

Effect of Die Cooling Time on Component Mechanical Properties in a Front Pillar Hot Stamping Process (곡선형 냉각채널 금형을 사용한 프론트 필라 핫스탬핑 공정에서 금형냉각시간이 기계적 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • Researchers have recently begun to study hot stamping processes to shorten the mold cooling time and improve productivity. These publications explain that the mold cooling time can be reduced by using a curved cooling channel, where the mold surface is processed to a uniform depth, instead of a straight cooling channel that uses the conventional gun drilling machine. This study investigates the characteristics of the front pillar of an automobile after using a mold with a curved cooling channel. To analyze the change in properties, we used a 1.6 mm boron steel blank and heated the prototype at $930^{\circ}C$ for 5 minutes. Next, we formed the prototype with a load of about 500 tons while varying the mold cooling time between 1 and 10 seconds. We subjected each prototype specimen to a tensile strength test, a hardness test, and a tissue surface observation.

  • Nowadays, the touch screen panel (TSP) cover glass for mobile smart devices is being developed with a curved glass shape due to different design requirements. Because the sizes of mobile smart devices continue to increase, there has also been a great increase in the demand for large-area curved glass greater than 20 inches. In this study, heat and fluid flow analysis using CFD was performed to optimize the heating surface temperature distribution of the large curved glass formation system. Five cooling water flow paths in the cooling block were designed and analyzed for each case. A function that can quantitatively calculate the temperature uniformity of the heating surface was proposed and these values were obtained for the five models. The temperature distributions of the heating surface and the energy consumption of the heating system were also compared and comprehensively analyzed. Based on the analysis results of the five different cooling channel path models, the optimal path design could be presented.

Research on the Cooling Characteristics of Hot Stamping Process with Thermal Conductivity Die Steel (금형 열전도율에 따른 핫스탬핑 공정 냉각 특성 연구)

  • In this study, the cooling characteristics of dies were investigated in the hot stamping process of front pillars for automobile. Two identical dies were manufactured out of tool steels with different thermal conductivities. The dies were designed with curved channels for uniform cooling of the blank. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were also carried out, which can consider the heat transfer among the coolant, die, and blank. Measured and simulated thermal histories of dies were compared, and it was shown that high conductivity tool steel has an excellent cooling capacity compared to conventional tool steel.

Preliminary conceptual design of a small high-flux multi-purpose LBE cooled fast reactor

  • The design concept of a Small High-flux Multipurpose LBE(Lead Bismuth Eutectic) cooled Fast Reactor (SHMLFR) was proposed in the paper. The primary cooling system of the reactor is forced circulation, and the fuel element form is arc-plate loaded high enrichment MOX fuel. The core is cylindrical with a flux trap set in the center of the core, which can be used as an irradiation channel. According to the requirements of the core physical design, a series of physical design criteria and constraints were given, and the steady and transient parameters of the reactor were calculated and analyzed. Regarding the thermal and hydraulic phenomena of the reactor, a simplified model was used to conduct a preliminary analysis of the fuel plates at special positions, and the temperature field distribution of the fuel plate with the highest power density under different coolant flow rates was simulated. The results show that the various parameters of SHMLFR meet the requirements and design criteria of the physical design of the core and the thermal design of the reactor. This implies that the conceptual design of SHMLFR is feasible.
