  • An experiment was carried out for the fully developed turbulent flow of water in tube coils on the condition of uniform heat flux. The present work was conducted for various ranges for Dean number(1794~1321), Prandtl number (2.5~4.5), curvature ratio parameters (22~60). Heat transfer to steady viscous flow in coiled tubes of circular cross section was studied for fully developed velocity and temperature fields under the thermal boundary condition of uniform heat flux. The peripherally local Nusselt number correlated as a function of Dean and Prandtl numbers. We studied the flow in heat coiled tubes under the influence of both centrifugal and buoyancy forces in order to gain insight into the flow pattern. In the present study, we obtained three emperical formulas, $Nu_v=0.0231Re^{0.84}Pr^{0.4}(a/R)^{0.13}$ (vertical) $Nu_c=0.0241Re^{0.86}Pr^{0.4}(a/R)^{0.08}$ (corrugated) $Nu_h=0.0227Re^{0.84}Pr^{0.4}(a/R)^{0.09}$ (horizontal).

  • Direct numerical simulations (DNS) is carried out to study fully-developed turbulent concentric annular pipe flow with two radius ratios at $Re_{Dh}\;=\;8900$. In case of $R_1/R_2\;=\;0.5$, the present result for the mean flow is in good agreement with the previous experimental data. Because of the transverse curvature effects, the distributions of mean flow and turbulent intensities are asymmetric in contrast to those of other fully-developed flows (channel and pipe flow). From the distributions of skewness of radial velocity fluctuations, it co be identified that all of the characteristics of channel, pipe and turbulent flow on a cylinder in axial flow can be appeared in concentric annular pipe flow.

  • A direct numerical simulation is performed for turbulent heat transfer in a concentric annulus at $Re_{Dh}=8900\;and\;Pr=0.71$ for two radius ratios ($R_{1}/R_{2}=0.1\;and\;0.5$) and $q^{\ast}=1.0$. Main emphasis is placed on the transverse curvature effect on near-wall turbulent thermal structures. Near-wall turbulent structures close to the inner and outer walls are scrutinized by computing the lower-order statistics. The fluctuating temperature variance and turbulent heat flux budgets are illustrated to confirm the results of the lower-order statistics. The present numerical results show that the turbulent structures near the outer wall are more activated than those near the inner wall, which may be attributed to the different vortex regeneration processes between the inner and outer walls.

  • The objective of this research is to evaluate of seismic performance for reinforced concrete bridge piers with lap splices of longitudinal reinforcement steels using predicting of nonlinear hysteric behavior. For the purpose, enhanced analytical trilinear hystretic model has been proposed to simulate the force-displacement hysteretic curve of RC bridge piers under repeated reversal loads. The moment capacity and corresponding curvature in the plastic hinge have been determined, and the enhanced hysteretic behavior model by five different kinds of branches has been proposed for modeling the stiffness variation of RC section under cyclic loading. The strength and stiffness degradation index are introduced to compute the hysteretic curve for various confinement steel ratios, In addition, the modified curvature factor has been introduced to forecast of seismic performance of longitudinal steel lap spliced and retrofitted specimens. The results of this research will be useful to predict of seismic performance for longitudinal steel with lap spliced and its retrofitted specimens.

  • Expressions for the calculation of ductility index for concrete girders with different ratios of prestressed and classical reinforcement were proposed using load-displacement, load-strain and load-curvature relation. The results of previous experimental static tests of several large-scale concrete girders with different ratio of prestressed and classical reinforcement are briefly presented. Using the proposed expressions, various ductility index of tested girders were calculated and discussed. It was concluded that the ductility of girders decreases approximately linearly by increasing the degree of prestressing. The study presents an expression for the calculation of the average ductility index of classical and prestressed reinforced concrete girders, which are similar to the analysed experimental test girders.

  • The friction factors according to the flow regimes in helical coil tubes depend on the coil diameter, the tube diameter, and the coil pitch. In previous studies, correlations for the laminar flow regime in helical coil tubes have been proposed. However, studies on the transition flow regime and the turbulent flow regime are insufficient and further researches are necessary. In this study, characteristics of the friction factors for the laminar, transition and turbulent flow regimes in helical coil tubes were experimentally investigated. The helical coil tubes used in the experiments were made of copper. The curvature ratios of the helical coil tubes, which means the ratio of helical coil diameter to inner diameter of the helical coil tube are 24.5 and 90.9. Experiments were carried out in the range of $529{\leq}Re{\leq}39,406$ to observe the flows from the laminar to the turbulent regime. The friction factors were obtained by measuring the differential pressures according to the flow rates in the helical coil tubes while varying the curvature ratios of the helical coil tubes. Experimental data show that the friction factors for the helical coil tube with 24.5 in the curvature ratio of the helical coil tube were larger than those in the straight tube in all flow regimes. As the curvature ratio of the helical coil tube increases, the friction factor in turbulent flow regime tends to be equal to that of the straight tube. In addition, it was confirmed that the transition flow regimes in the helical coil tubes were much wider than those in the straight tube, also the critical Reynolds numbers were larger than those in the straight tube. The results obtained in this experimental study can be used as basic data for studies on the water hammer phenomenon in helical coil tubes.

  • An analytic similarity shape solution was studied for a two-dimensional floating and fluid-filled membrane structure. The static shape of a membrane structure can be expressed as a set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations. The integration of curvature leads to an analytic solution for the shape, which contains unknown boundary values. Matching the upper and lower shapes at the free surface incorporated with their buoyancy allowed the unknowns to be determined. Some characteristic values of similarity shapes were evaluated and shapes are illustrated for various density ratios and volume efficiency ratios.

  • The present article reported the thermal buckling strength of the sandwich shell panel structure and subsequent improvement of the same by embedding shape memory alloy (SMA) fibre via a general higher-order mathematical model in conjunction with finite element method. The geometrical distortion of the panel structure due to the temperature is included using Green-Lagrange strain-displacement relations. In addition, the material nonlinearity of SMA fibre due to the elevated thermal environment also incorporated in the current analysis through the marching technique. The final form of the equilibrium equation is obtained by minimising the total potential energy functional and solved computationally with the help of an original MATLAB code. The convergence and the accuracy of the developed model are demonstrated by solving similar kind of published numerical examples including the necessary input parameter. After the necessary establishment of the newly developed numerical solution, the model is extended further to examine the effect of the different structural parameters (side-to-thickness ratios, curvature ratios, core-to-face thickness ratios, volume fractions of SMA fibre and end conditions) on the buckling strength of the SMA embedded sandwich composite shell panel including the different geometrical configurations.

  • Fiber reinforced composite materials have outstanding specific strength and specific stiffness. So the use of composite materials increases in various kinds of industrial fields including sports goods such as bicycles. Composite materials are used to make structural parts with various kinds of shapes. Specially, rectangular composite tubes are used to make a few of composite bicycle frames, but there has been a few of research on this issue. Rectangular composite tubes are designed to have appropriate radius of curvature and endure bending and torsional loads. In this research, nine kinds of rectangular composite tubes having aspect ratios 1:1, 1:1.5, 1:2 and radius of curvatures R5, R10, R15 were fabricated. The carbon fiber reinforced composite material was used to make tubes having same cross sectional areas. The stacking sequence of tubes is $[0/90/{\pm}45]s$. Experimental evaluation was accomplished to apply bending and torsional load to the tubes. Experimental results show that bending and torsional characteristics depend on radius of curvature and aspect ratio of rectangular composite tubes.

  • Second-order rate constants ($k_N$) have been measured spectrophotometrically for nucleophilic substitution reactions of 2,4-dinitrophenyl phenyl thionocarbonate 4 with a series of Z-substituted pyridines in 80 mol % $H_2O$/20 mol % DMSO at $25.0{\pm}0.1^{\circ}C$. The Br${\o}$nsted-type plot for the reactions of 4 exhibits downward curvature (i.e., ${\beta}_1$ = 0.21 and ${\beta}_2$ = 1.04), indicating that the reactions proceed through a stepwise mechanism with a change in rate-determining step. It has been found that 4 is less reactive than its oxygen analogue, 2,4-dinitrophenyl phenyl carbonate 3, although the thionocarbonate is expected to be more electrophilic than its oxygen analogue. The $pK_a$ at the center of the Br${\o}$nsted curvature, defined as $pK_a^o$, has been analyzed to be 6.6 for the reactions of 4 and 8.5 for those of 3. Dissection of $k_N$ into the microscopic rate constants $k_1$ and $k_2/k_{-1}$ ratio has revealed that the reactions of 4 result in smaller $k_1$ values but larger $k_2/k_{-1}$ ratios than the corresponding reactions of 3. The larger $k_2/k_{-1}$ ratios have been concluded to be responsible for the smaller $pK_a^o$ found for the reactions of 4.
