  • A winding bend rig for measurement of springback ratio is made. It measures the bending angles before and after release of bending load which bends specimens with keeping a constant curvature. Thus the springback ratio can be obtained by using this bend rig. Analytical explanations for the spring back are tried by employing simple beam theory. For the analytical calculations with the theory, Young's modulus, fracture strain and stress-strain curve are necessary and these data are obtained from a tensile test. Using both of the beam theory and the results of tensile test, the springback ratio is also calculated. Comparisons of the two springback ratios, one is obtained from bending test and the other from tensile test, show a good agreement.

  • Though the increment of using computer vision system in modern industry, there are lots of difficulties to measure precisely because of measurement error distortion phenomenon. Among these reasons, the distortion of edge is dominant reason which is occurred by the blurred image. The blurred image is happened when camera can not discriminate its precise focus. To calibrate and generalize distortion phenomenon is important. Thus, we must fix the discrimination criteria which is collected by image recognition of precise focus. Also, radial distortion causes an inward or outward displacement of a given image point from its ideal location. This type of distortion is mainly caused by flawed radial curvature curve of the elements. Thus, we were analyzed the distortion in terms of the changed with lens magnification.

  • In this study, ultrasonic transducers for non-destructive contact measurement of whole fruits were developed. The design parameters for ultrasonic transducer such as acoustical impedance of fruits, kinds of piezoelectric materials, ultrasonic wave frequency, and transducer diameter were investigated. In order to match the acoustical impedance between piezoelectric material and fruit, various materials were fabricated and evaluated. Also to control the sensitivity and bandwidth of the ultrasonic transducer, various backing materials were fabricated and evaluated. Especially, the wear plate of the ultrasonic transducer was designed and fabricated considering the curvature of fruit. The central frequencies of two developed ultrasonic transducers were about 100 kHz and 200 kHz, respectively. With the developed ultrasonic transducers, non-destructive evaluation of the fruit will be possible.

  • Mean flow and turbulence properties of developing turbulent flows in a 90 degree square bend with span-wise rotation are measured by a hot-wire anemometer. A slanted wire is rotated into 6 orientations and the voltage outputs from them are combined to obtain the mean velocity and the Reynolds stress components. Combined effects of the centrifugal and Coriolis forces due to the curvature and the rotation of the bend on the mean motion and turbulence structures are investigated experimentally. Results show that the two body forces can either enhance or counteract each other depending on the flow direction in the bend.

  • This paper proposes a method for extracting tissue cells from an organism image by an electron microscope and getting the whole cell number and the area from the cell. In general, the difference between the cell color and the background is used to extract tissue cell. However, there may be a problem when overlapped cells are seen as a single cell. To solve the problem, we split them by using cell size and curvature. This method has a 99% accuracy rate. To measure the cell area, we compute two areas, the inside and boundary of the cell. The inside is simply calculated by the number of pixels. The cell boundary is obtained by applying super sampling, linear interpolation, and cubic spline interpolation. It improves the error rate, 18%, 19%, and 120% respectively, in comparison to the counting method that counts a pixel area as 1.

  • This stusy was to investigate the marginal fitness of porcelain-fused-to- metal crown after succesive firing cycle. Main variables were the degree of marginal curvature of labiocervical margin and the type of alloy. The exaggerated marginal curvature(EMC) was created by additional reduction at the faciocervical wall of the normallized marginal curvature (NMC)-typed ivorine tooth by using milling machine. The difference in the shape was the mid facial margin was placed 2mm apical to cemento- enamel junction in labial surface. Three types of alloy were high noble, noble, and base metal alloy. Test specimens were divided into 8 groups and each group had 8 specimens. Sixty four ceramometal crowns were made totally. Measurement stages were following degassing, opaquing. body porcelain firing, and glazing, and measuring sites were 4. (midmesial, midfacial, middistal, and midlingual). Digital, travelling measuring microscope (0.5 um precision, Olympus. Japan) was used under ${\times}250$ magnification. Within the limitation of this investigation, it was concluded as belows: 1. The pattern of marginal distortion was varied. Degassing stage was not a specific, causative stage that induce most of total marginal distortion during whole procedure fabricating a ceramometal crown. Body firing stage induced discrepancy relatively more than other firing stages. 2. The specimens that were Ni-based alloy and had EMC were distorted persistently following successive fabricating procedures. But marginal openings were decreased after glazing. 3. The release of metal grinding-induced stress was presumed as a cause that induce marginal distortion. 4. The amount of discrepancies of the labial and lingual margins were greater than that of the mesial and distal margin in the specimen that had EMC. 5. Silver-plated die was not enough to resist abrasion during repeated seating of metal copings on the die-holding device.

  • Production of green pepper has increased for ten years in Korea, as customer's preference of a pepper tuned to fiesta one. This study was conducted to develop an on-line fading algorithm of green pepper using machine vision and aimed to develop the automatic on-line grading and sorting system. The machine vision system was composed of a professive scan R7B CCD camera, a frame grabber and sets of 3-wave fluorescent lamps. The length and curvature, which were main quality factors of a green pepper were measured while removing the stem region. The first derivative of the thickness profile was used to remove the stem area of the segmented image of the pepper. A new boundary was generated after the stem was removed and a baseline of a pepper which was used for the curvature determination was also generated. The developed algorithm showed that the accuracy of the size measurement was 86.6% and the accuracy of the bent was 91.9%. Processing time spent far grading was around 0.17 sec per pepper.

  • Highly-Birefringent Photonic Crystal Fiber (Hi-Bi PCF) is composed of a single material, silica, so that its temperature sensitivity is extremely low. Therefore, we propose afiber based Sagnac interferometer for measurement of strain and curvature independent of temperature variation. The sensitivities of strain and curvature (both axes) are measured to be $1.41\;pm/{\mu}{\varepsilon}$ and $0.93nm/m^{-1}$(slow axis Y), $-1.6\;nm/m^{-1}$(fast axis X), respectively.

  • Turbulent Couette flow between coaxial cylinders with inner one rotating has been investigated experimentally and numerically. The radius ratio of the coaxial cylinders is 0.43. Mean velocity and turbulent stresses have been measured by hot-wire anemometer in the range of Reynolds number based on the velocity at rotating wall and the radial distance between walls, 60,900-187,000. For the numerical computation, the Reynolds stress model has been used as a turbulence closure model. Measurements of mean velocity show that the velocity profile of wall layer largely deviates from universal logarithmic law due to the effect of streamline curvature, especially in the region near the stationary outer cylinder. The results computed with the Reynolds stress model agree well with the experimental data in the prediction of circumferential intensity of turbulent fluctuations. However, the computed level of radial intensity is much higher than the measurement. Curvature-corrected versions of the Reynolds stress model improves the prediction of turbulent intensities, but the results are not fully satisfactory.
