  • In today's college curriculum, fashion illustration courses are regarded as fundamental sources of knowledge in the fashion industry and the fine arts. The purpose of this study was to critically examine current curricula and educational objectives of fashion illustration courses offered by domestic fashion-related universities and academic institutions, in order to help the development of more effective tertiary level fashion education. Based on the results of data analysis, we suggest the following recommendations: Firstly, university courses should focus on drawing-centered fundamental education. Secondly, design education linked to fashion illustration should be strengthened. Thirdly, creativity-boosting design education is necessary. The range of curricula that could foster creativity and problem-solving skills in professionals should be enlarged, and future education should place emphasis on lateral and creative thinking. The result of this study are expected to contribute to the development of better curriculum in fashion-related education.

  • In this study we overviewed the early private learning for children in Korea. For last 20 years the number of children who were involved in it increased and the starting age had been lowered. Now more than 90% of the children are exposed to it before going to school. Mean number of private lesson per child is between three to four (33.6%). 32.7% of preschoolers take more than 5 kinds of private lesson per week. Because of the frantic enthusiasm of the parents, most preschools and kindergartens are providing extra curricula in their programs. The main problem of the learning in Korea is that it does not run by government or universities with educational purposes but by commercial companies for profit.

Data were collected through national curriculum documents and social studies middle textbooks for 7-9 grades. We set up three questions for this studies; what kinds of information graphics are used in the textbooks, how the graphics are organized in the social studies middle school, and how the 7th social studies curriculum is related with the 7th national mathematics curriculum. Through the data analysis, we found that 1) Photographs, illustrations, information maps, etc., are used and frequencies of their usages are in descending order, 2) double lines graphs, circle graphs, and stripe graphs nip often adopted for the comparison of populations, 3) the relation of the two subjects curricula is not so good, especially in the curriculum steps of information mads scatter diagrams, and comparison of populations. Finally we suggest that new web site of data view or information graphics be provided for two curricula, workshop of information graphics are needed for social studies teachers.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of accreditation on curriculum in Korean engineering education. To analyze the curriculum, bulletins of three colleges accredited programs and three colleges non-accredited programs from 2002 to 2010 were compared. The conclusions of this study are as follows. First, the accreditation for engineering education has a considerable influence on curriculum by strengthening the concentration areas, setting general education directions to fit engineering needs, and reinforcing major and MSC(math, science and computer) subjects. Secondly, the accreditation for engineering education causes significant changes in the educational objectives and contents. Lastly, it has an indirect influence on the curricula of non-accredited programs, such as increasing the number of MSC credits and accepting engineering design courses. Thus, the process of curriculum improvement is revealed in more global standardized engineering curricula.
