  • Thermal power generation accounts for the highest percentage of domestic power generation, among which coal-fired boiler generation accounts for the highest percentage. Coal boilers generate harmful substances and fine dust during coal combustion and have a serious effect on air pollution. So, fluidized-bed boilers have been introduced as eco-friendly coal boilers. It uses a fluid medium which affect the combustion temperature of coal. Because of it fluidized-bed boilers emit less pollutants than original one. Water-wall tubes play an important role in this fluidized bed boiler. Due to the fluid medium, the wall damage is more severe than the existing boiler. However, there is no quantitative maintenance technique in Korea yet. Remote field eddy current testing is a non-destructive evaluation technique that is often used for inspection of inner and outer wall of tube. it can inspect with non-contact and high speed. However, it is an inspection that proceeds from inside the pipe, and the water-wall tube is not able to enter the interior. In this study, we designed and simulated an external remote field eddy current sensor suitable for water-wall tube of a fluidized - bed boiler using simulations. By obtaining a signal similar to the existing remote field eddy current test, the criteria for the external remote field eddy current sensor design can be presented.

  • Recently, as a result of increasing concern about eco-friendly power, the demand for the power stations using environmentally friendly powers such as photovoltaic energy, wind force, tidal power, and tidal current has been increasing worldwide. Among these power stations tidal current power plant requires strong current generated by the topographic characteristics of the ocean floor. Uldolmok waterway producing very strong current is an ideal location for a tidal current power generation. However the occurrence of anthropogenic underwater noise generated by the tidal current power station may affect the marine environment. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the noise radiated from the station and predict the range influenced by the radiated noise. In this paper, the measurements of radiated noise spectrum level by the tidal current power station are presented, and the source level per unit area is estimated. Finally, the propagation properties of the radiated noise in the Uldolmok waterway is evaluated from the model simulation using the parabolic equation method, RAM.

  • This paper is about power transfer between heterogeneous systems in zero-energy buildings. Currently, electricity used in buildings, from renewable energy generation power in buildings, consists of alternating current networks. In order to use electricity, alternating current must be converted to direct current, which typically results in a loss of 10%. In order to solve this problem, research is needed to reduce power loss as much as possible by implementing both a DC network and an AC network in a zero-energy building. Therefore, in this paper, an inter-link converter capable of bidirectional power transfer between DC and AC networks applied to zero-energy buildings is developed. The structure of the inter-link converter to be developed was proposed and its feasibility was verified through simulations and experiments.

  • A marine collision accident occurred at the Jin-do water way. A barge loaded with heavy equipment of Power Generation Plant was being towed at its side by two tugs "A" and "B" from Byeg-pa harbour to the designated position to be used for power generation plant near Jin-do bridge. The Power Generation Plant was 40-meters high loaded atop the barge. When the "tugs and tow" were approaching the Jin-do the bridge, the two towing tugs lost maneuvering control of the barge and it went off-course, hit first the waterway embankment and finally struck the lower part of bridge's span and post musing the barge to capsize and sunk its cargo into the sea. The bridge also suffered damages where the top of the Plant struck At the time of the accident, there was a strong tidal current at the waterway. This paper calculates the safe towing force of barges with heavy loads when traversing in a strong tidal current situation in narrow waterway.

  • Novel class AB CMOS second-generation current conveyors (CCII) using 0.6.mu.m n-well CMOS process for high-frequency current-mode signal processing were developed. The CCII for low power operation consists of a class AB push-pull stage for the current input, a complementary source follower for the voltage input, and a cascode current mirror for the current output. In this architecture, the two input stages are coupled by current mirrors to reduce the current input impedance. Measurements of the fabricated CCII show that the current input impedance is 875.ohm. and the bandwidth of flat gain when used as a voltage amplifier extends beyond 4MHz. The power dissipation is 1.25mW and the active chip area is 0.2*0.15[mm$\^$2/].

  • One of the most serious problems in KEPCO power system is the load centralization in the capital area. The load capacity in the capital area is almost 40% of the total load. However, the generation capacity in this area is just 16% of the total generation. The inequality, between the power demand and supply, in this area needs the power transmission from other regions. The simplest method to solve the problem is the installation of power plants or the addition of high-capacity transmission line in the metropolitan area. However, because of the concentration of human and material resources, there is a difficulty in the installation of the generation and transformer facility. As a result, instead of the installation of large scale facilities, the approach to maximize the application of existing facilities is required. In this research, we will develop a scheme with an HVDC installation for enhancing power transfer capability by utilizing the existing transmission lines.

  • A considerable amount of research material discussing designs and properties of High Temperature Superconducting Fault Current Limiter (HTS FCL) is available. However, a shortage of research concerning positioning of HTS FCL in power grid is felt. In this paper a feasibility study of HTS FCL positioning in Smart Grid through simulation analysis is carried out. A complete power network (including generation, transmission and distribution) is modeled in Simulink / SimPowerSystems. A generalized HTS FCL is also designed by integrating Simulink and SimPowerSystem blocks. The distribution network of the model has a wind turbine attached to it forming a micro grid. Three phase fault have been simulated along with placing FCL models at key points of the distribution grid. It is observed that distribution grid, having distributed generation sources attached to it, must not have a single FCL located at the substation level. Optimized HTS FCL location regarding the best fault current contribution from wind turbine has been determined through simulation analysis.

  • An ideal circuit breaker should supply electric power to loads without losses in a conduction state and completely isolate the load from the power source by providing insulation strength in a break state. Fault current is relatively easy to break in an Alternating Current (AC) circuit breaker because the AC current becomes zero at every half cycle. However, fault current in DC circuit breaker (DCCB) should be reduced by generating a high arc voltage at the breaker contact point. Large fire may occur if the DCCB does not take sufficient arc voltage and allows the continuous flow of the arc fault current with high temperature. A semiconductor circuit breaker with a power electronic device has many advantages. These advantages include quick breaking time, lack of arc generation, and lower noise than mechanical circuit breakers. However, a large load capacity cannot be applied because of large conduction loss. An extinguishing technology of DCCB with polymeric positive temperature coefficient (PPTC) device is proposed and evaluated through experiments in this study to take advantage of low conduction loss of mechanical circuit breaker and arcless breaking characteristic of semiconductor devices.

  • A fuel cell (FC) system includes a fuel processor plus subsystems to manage air, water, and thermal energy, and electric power. The overall system is high-priced and needs peripheral devices. In this paper, a FC simulator is designed and constructed with the electrical characteristics of a fuel cell generation (FCG) system, using uses a simple buck converter to overcome these disadvantages. The characteristic voltage and current (V-I) curve for the FC simulator is controlled by a simplified linear function. In addition, to verify FCG system performance and operation, a full-bridge DC/DC converter and a single-phase DC/AC inverter were designed and constructed for FC applications. Close agreement between the simulation and experimental results confirms the validity and usefulness of the proposed FC simulator.
