  • FE models for complex or large-scaled structures that need detailed modeling of structural components are usually constructed using commercial analysis softwares. Updating of such FE model by conventional sensitivity-based methods is difficult since repeated computation for perturbed parameters and manual calculations are needed to obtain sensitivity matrix in each iteration. In this study, an FE model updating procedure avoiding such difficulties by using response surface (RS) method and a Pareto-based multiobjective optimization (MOO) was formulated and applied to FE models constructed with a commercial analysis package. The test building is a low-rise reinforced concrete building that has been seismically retrofitted. Dynamic properties of the building were extracted from vibration tests performed before and after the seismic retrofits, respectively. The elastic modulus of concrete and masonry, and spring constants for the expansion joint were updated. Two RS functions representing the errors in the natural frequencies and mode shape, respectively, were obtained and used as the objective functions for MOO. Among the Pareto solutions, the best compromise solution was determined using the TOPSIS (Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) procedure. A similar task was performed for retrofitted building by taking the updating parameters as the stiffness of modified or added members. Obtained parameters of the existing building were reasonably comparable with the current code provisions. However, the stiffness of added concrete shear walls and steel section jacketed members were considerably lower than expectation. Such low values are seemingly because the bond between new and existing concrete was not as good as the monolithically casted members, even though they were connected by the anchoring bars.

  • This paper presents a new small-sized damper featuring magneto-rheological (MR) fluid which can be applied to vibration control system. The proposed MR damper consists of cylinder, piston, a couple of bearings, oil-seals and magnetic circuit which has two coils. In this damper, approximately 5cc of MR fluid is used. The damping force of the MR damper is designed to be followed by linear shear-mode Bingham-plastic model. In order to verify the performance of the MR damper, an experimental apparatus is established. In the experimental test, the damping force of the MR damper is measured with respect to time, displacement and velocity. In addition, the time response of MR damper is measured when 1A of step current is applied. Finally, The proposed small MR damper is applied to vibration control. In this process, a simple 1-DOF system is modeled and controlled using PID controller.

  • A solar array simulator (SAS) consists of an engine that generates a setpoint according to panel characteristics, a power stage that provides the actual output, and a controller. Particularly, if the control method is not suitable due to the nonlinearity of the solar panel output curve depending on the irradiation amount and the temperature, and the variation of the curve factor depending on the various panel materials, then the panel simulation function cannot be performed properly. Current and voltage mode controls are usually used for the conventional control method. However, these control methods deteriorate the control performance near the maximum power point; thus, a hybrid control method using two or more controllers has been investigated. In this study, we analyze the hybrid control method using three controllers divided into different areas. The design equation of the controller is derived based on the small signal modeling of each controller, and the simulation performance of the solar array simulator verifies its stability and response speed.

  • This paper presents a result of performance evaluation fur non-contact scanning probe microscopy with respect to the vibration characteristics of cantilevers with tips. One of the current issues of the scanning probe microscopy technology is to increase the measurement speed, which is closely tied with the dynamic characteristics of cantilevers. The primary concern in this research is to investigate the relation between the maximum possible speed of non-contact scanning probe microscopy and the dynamic characteristics of cantilevers. First, the finite element analysis is made fur the vibration characteristics of various cantilevers in use. The computed natural frequencies of the cantilevers are in good agreement with measured ones. Then, each cantilever is tested with topographic measurement for a standard sample with the scanning speed changed. The performances of cantilevers are analyzed along with the natural frequencies of cantilevers. Experiments are also performed to test the effects of how to attach cantilevers in the piezo-electric actuator. Finally, measurement sensitivity has been analyzed to enhance the performance of scanning probe microscopy.

  • This paper describes the design and implementation of a 2.5kW (500V, 5A) simmer circuit that maintains the ionization of xenon gas inside the lamp. The design is based on a LCC resonant converter in continuous conduction mode (CCM) with above resonant frequency to take advantage of high power density from using parasitic elements such as the leakage inductance in a power transformer. In addition, since the converter has current source output characteristics, it is suitable for maintaining ionization of the lamp having the negative resistance load characteristic. To verify this converter design, PSpice modeling was performed. Finally, the developed simmer circuit is verified by a resistive load of rated performance and the Ionization maintenance operation of the xenon flash lamp.

  • This study aims at modeling the rotary drying of wood chips in co-current mode and estimating the drying time of larch (Larix kaemferi) wood chip. Drying data were obtained in a lab. scale fixed bed dryer operating with an air velocity of 1 m/sec. and at hot air inlet temperatures of $100^{\circ}C$, $200^{\circ}C$, and $300^{\circ}C$. The lab. scale fixed-bed drying rates for small, medium and large size larch wood chips that had been dried from 40% wet-based moisture content (MC) to 10% MC at $200^{\circ}C$ drying temperature were 17.3 %/min., 10.2 %/min. and 5.5 %/min., respectively. It was predicted that larch large size wood chips could be dried from 40% MC to 10% MC in about 23.0, 34.6, and 44.7 minutes at $300^{\circ}C$, $200^{\circ}C$ and $150^{\circ}C$, respectively. Expected drying times for medium size chips were about 8.6, 11.2 and 13.2 minutes and those for small size chips were 4.3, 5.5 and 6.4 minutes, respectively.

  • We propose a nearly lossless, compact, electrically modulated vertical directional coupler, which is based on the controllable evanescent coupling in a previously proposed graphene-assisted total internal reflection (GA-FTIR) scheme. In the proposed device, two single-mode waveguides are separate by graphene-$SiO_2$-graphene layers. By changing the chemical potential of the graphene layers with a gate voltage, the coupling strength between the waveguides, and hence the coupling length of the directional coupler, is controlled. Therefore, for a properly chosen, fixed device length, when an input wave is launched into one of the waveguides, the ratio of their output powers can be controlled electrically. The operation of the proposed device is analyzed, with the dispersion relations calculated using a model of a one-dimensional slab waveguide. The supermodes in the coupled waveguide are calculated using the finite-element method to estimate the coupling length, realistic devices are designed, and their performance was confirmed using the finite-difference time-domain method. The designed $3{\mu}m$ by $1{\mu}m$ device achieves an insertion loss of less than 0.11 dB, and a 24-dB extinction ratio between bar and cross states. The proposed low-loss device could enable integrated modulation of a strong optical signal, without thermal buildup.

  • The dye wastewater discharge from the textile industries mainly affects the aquatic environment. Hence, the treatment of this wastewater is essential for a pollutant-free environment. The purpose of this research is to optimize the dye removal efficiency for process influencing independent variables such as pH, electrolysis time (ET), and current density (CD) by using Box-Behnken design (BBD) optimization and Genetic Algorithm (GA) modelling. The electrocoagulation treatment technique was used to treat the synthetically prepared Reactive Black dye solution under batch mode potentiometric operations. The percentage of error for the BBD optimization was significantly greater than for the GA modelling results. The optimum factors determined by GA modelling were CD-59.11 mA/cm2, ET-24.17 minutes, and pH-8.4. At this moment, the experimental and predicted dye removal efficiencies were found to be 96.25% and 98.26%, respectively. The most and least predominant factors found by the beta coefficient were ET and pH respectively. The outcome of this research shows GA modeling is a better tool for predicting dye removal efficiencies as well as process influencing factors.

  • From the unprecedented 2011 spring flood, the residens reside by Lake Champlain and Richelieu River encountered enormous damages. The International Joint Committee (IJC) released the Lake Champlain-Richelieu River (LCRR) Plan of Study (PoS). One of the major tasks for the PoS is to investigate the possible scenarios that might happen in the LCRR basin based on the stochastic simulation of the Net Basin Supplies that calculates the amount of flow into the lake and the river. Therefore, the current study proposed a novel apporach that simulate the annual NBS teleconnecting the climate index. The proposed model employed the bivariate empirical decomposition to contamporaneously model the long-term evolution of nonstationary oscillation embeded in the annual NBS and the climate signal (here, Artic Oscillation: AO). In order to represent the variational behavior of NBS correlation structure along with the temporal revolution of the climate index, a new nonstationary parameterization concept is proposed. The results indicate that the proposed model is superior performance in preserving long and short temporal correlation. It can even preserve the hurst coefficient better than any other tested models.
