A Case Report of Fibromyalgia Improved by Korean Medical Treatment (섬유근육통의 한방치료 증례보고 1례)

  • Introduction: The aim of this study is to report the effect of traditional Korean medical treatment on fibromyalgia. Case presentation: A patient with fibromyalgia was treated with acupuncture, pharmacopuncture (Bee venom, Hwangryunhaedok-tang), cupping therapy, moxibustion therapy and herbal medicine for 37 days. To reduce the patient's symptoms, we provided herbal medicine three times a day, as well as acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, cupping therapy and moxibustion therapy once a day for 37 days. To evaluate the results of this treatment, we used the Numeral Rating Scale (NRS), Score of Sleeping Quality (SSQ) and Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ). After treatment, the patient showed that pain was reduced, the score of NRS was improved, FIQ improved from 91 to 69 and SSQ improved from 3 to 1. No adverse reaction was noted. Conclusion: According to the result, traditional Korean medical treatment can be effective and safe for the treatment of fibromyalgia.

A Clinical Case of Oriental Medical Treatment for the Pregnant Woman with HNP at L-spine (임신 중 요추간판 탈출증 환자의 한의학적 치료효과)

  • Objectives : This study was performed to report the effect and safety of oriental medical treatment in the pregnant woman diagnosed to herniation of nuclues pulposus(HNP) at L5-S1 with central protrusion and left S1 nerve root. Methods : A 32-year old pregnant woman diagnosed HNP at L5-S1 at local hospital was admitted with low back pain and left leg rad pain. We treated her by acupuncture, a herbal medicine, cupping treatment and measured visual analogue scale(VAS), Oswestry disability index(ODI) and Roland-Morris disability qustionnaire(RMDQ) from 5th March 2010 to 26th March 2010. Results : After treatment, most symptoms decreased, VAS score changed 10 to 2, ODI changed 388, RMDQ changed 13 to 6. Conclusions : In this study, oriental medical treatment was effective and safe in pregnant woman with HNP at L-spine. But the rigorous studies will be needed to define clearly that oriental medical treatment is effective and safe in pregnant women with HNP at L-spine.

Analysis of the Effects on the Level of Pain and Functional Improvement After Integrated Korean Medicine in Patients with Shoulder Impingement Syndrome: A Retrospective Chart Review

  • Background: This study investigated the clinical effectiveness of Korean medicine (KM) treatment for shoulder impingement syndrome (SIS). Methods: There were 61 patients who were diagnosed with SIS in the Jaseng hospital network of KM (7 hospitals located in Korea: Gangnam, Daejeon, Bucheon, Haeundae, Bundang, Ulsan, and Gwangju) between January 1st, 2015 and December 31st, 2020 who were retrospectively reviewed. The patients were grouped according to complications, intake of analgesics, duration of illness preadmission, and treatment. Treatments consisted of herbal medicine, acupuncture, cupping, Chuna, pharmacopuncture, bee venom pharmacopuncture, medicinal steaming, Daoyin exercises, and physical therapy. By comparing the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), Shoulder Pain and Disability Index, and European Quality of Life 5-Dimensions questionnaire scores, the effectiveness of integrated KM treatment was evaluated. Results: There were 14 males and 47 females. For inpatients diagnosed with SIS, the mean NRS score decreased from 5.78 ± 1.33 to 3.40 ± 1.43 (p < 0.001). The mean Shoulder Pain and Disability Index score decreased from 53.87 ± 14.76 to 38.56 ± 18.87 (p < 0.001), and the mean European Quality of Life 5-Dimensions questionnaire increased from 0.67 ± 0.13 to 0.76 ± 0.09 (p < 0.001) after KM treatment. Medicinal steaming (0.398; p < 0.001), acupuncture (0.290), cupping (0.288), bee venom pharmacopuncture (0.282), and Daoyin exercises (0.262; p < 0.05) had a positive correlation with improved changes in the NRS score. Conclusion: Conclusion: Treatment with integrated KM treatment improved the pain, range of motion, shoulder function, and quality of life of patients with SIS.

Three Cases of Postpartum Hyperhidrosis Patients Treated with Korean Medical Treatment Including Sanhuhyulpung-tang (산후혈풍탕을 포함한 한방치료로 호전된 산후다한 치험 3례)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to report the effects of Korean medical treatment including Sanhuhyulpung-tang on three postpartum patients who suffered from hyperhidrosis. Methods: We treated three patients complained of postpartum symptoms including hyperhidrosis. The patients were treated by Traditional Korean Medicine including herbal medicine, acupuncture, moxibustion, and cupping therapy. Sanhuhyulpung-tang is a herbal medicine prescription which is used in clinical practice for the treatment of postpartum sweating, anxiety, flushing, and joint pain. Three patients were hospitalized for treatment for 6, 8, and 19 days respectively. During hospitalization, patients took Sanhuhyulpung-tang three times a day, and acupuncture, moxibustion, and cupping were performed once a day. To evaluate the degree of improvement, we used VAS score of the patient's chief complaint during hospitalization. Results: After the treatment, symptoms including hyperhidrosis were improved. The degree of excessive sweating decreased to 30% in two patients, and 55% in one patient. Combined symptoms including lower coldness, burning sensation, chilling, and multiple site pain also improved on discharge day. Conclusions: This case report shows that Korean medicine treatment including Sanhuhyulpung-tang can improve postpartum symptoms including hyperhidrosis.

A case of Seborrheic dermatitis treated by Bangpungtongsungsangamibang (방풍통성산가미방을 병행한 지루성 피부염 치험 1례)

  • Objectives : Seborrheic dermatitis is an inflammatory skin disorder affecting the scalp, face, and torso. Typically, it presents with scaly, flaky, itchy, and red skin. It may be aggravated by illness, psychological stress, fatigue, sleep deprivation, change of season. The purpose of this study was to report the clinical effects of herbal medicine on Seborrheic dermatitisMethods : We employed oriental medical treatments; herbal-medication (Bangpungtongsungsangamibang), acupuncture, moxibustion and cupping therapy. At the same time, the patient sweated out the skin poison. We treated him two times a week with oriental therapy method. He took medicine three times a day after a meal. During taking medicine, we let him avoid fatty food, flour based food, and alcohol. We took a picture the patient's body parts and compared the symptom with previous symptom. With the picture, we evaluated the patient's condition.Results : After taking treatment - 77 times' acupuncture, moxibustion and cupping therapy during 9 months and taking herbal-medicine, the skin condition of the patient was much improved. At first, he was troubled with itching and hot feeling at reddish area, time after time the itching and hot feeling was weakened. The reddish area was changed to scaly and flaky skin and changed to normal state.Conclusions : Herbal medicine (Bangpungtongsungsangamibang) with oriental medical treatments was an effective in the treatment of Seborrheic Dermatitis and it helped to improve regenerating the skin in the body.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study is to report the patient diagnosed as calcific tendinitis located at supraspinatus, who improved by Oriental medical treatment, through analysis of radiograph. Methods : The patient was managed by acupuncture, moxibustion and cupping without medication and physical therapy. We measured the shoulder state by radiograph and evaluated with UCLA shoulder rating scale. Results : After 5 week treatment, the pain of patient and The UCLA functional average score was improved. Also we found that the deposits of calcific tendinitis was almost disappeared in radiograph. Conclusions : The results suggest that acupuncture, moxibustion and cupping can be effective in reducing the pain and the deposits of calcific tendinitis. We think that it need the further study and clinical trial for calcific tendinitis.

  • Medical disputes are increasing year by year in korean medical institutions as the frequency of patient's visiting korean medical institutions goes high and the reliability relations between korean medical doctors and patients are getting worse than the past. Frequently occurring accidents in korean medical acts fall into some categories such as medical treatment of acupuncture${\cdot}$moxibustion${\cdot}$cupping, korean herbal medication, korean medical physical therapy, wrong diagnosis. Frequently occurring accidents include these cases. Infection due to improper treatment process of acupunctrue or wet-cupping ; skin-burns caused by moxibustion, infrared therapy or haet therapy ;toxic hepatitis or kidney dysfunction induced by herbal medication ; progression of disease or missing of opportunity of timely transfer because of wrong diagnosis. It will prevent medical accidents to a great extent for korean medical doctors to have scientific diagnostic techniques and lab. test results at hand in korean medical institutions.

A Retrospective Study of Acute Lumbar Sprain Patients on the Effect of Korean Medicine Treatment with Dokhwal-tang (Duhuo-tang) (급성 요추부 염좌로 입원했던 환자군의 독활탕 치료 효과에 대한 후향적 고찰)

  • Objectives This study investigated the effect of korean medicine treatment with Dokhwal-tang (Duhuo-tang) on Lumbal sprain patients by comparing with other herbal medicines. Methods 17 lumbar sprain patients of group treated with Dokhwal-tang (Duhuo-tang) were treated with Dokhwal-tang (Duhuo-tang), acupunture, cupping, oriental physical therapy. 13 lumbar sprain patients of group treated with other herbal medicines were treated with 9 prescriptions of herbal medicine, acupunture, cupping, oriental physical therapy. ODI (Oswestry diability index), VAS (Visual Analogue Scale) were checked to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment. Results 1) ODI, VAS of patients treated with Dokhwal-tang (Duhuo-tang) were all improved and there were statistical significance (p<0.05). 2) VAS of group treated with Dokhwal-tang (Duhuo-tang) and that of group treated with other herbal medicines were all improved significantly. And treatment period of group treated with Dokhwal-tang (Duhuo-tang) was shorter than that of group treated with other herbal medicines. But there was no statistical significance between VAS of group treated with Dokhwal-tang (Duhuo-tang) and that of group treated with other herbal medicines. 3) In comparing medical history period on group treated with Dokhwal-tang (Duhuo-tang), ODI, VAS of hyper-acute phase group and acute phase group were improved but them of sub-acute phase group were less improved. Conclusions According to the study, korean complex therapy with Dokhwal-tang (Duhuo-tang) might improve acute lumbar sprain.

A Case Report on a Hwabyung Patient with Binge Eating (폭식을 주소로 한 화병(火病)환자 치험(治驗)1예(例))

  • Hwabyung is a culture-bound anger syndrome in Korea. It manifests as one or more of a wide range of physical symptoms, in response to emotional stress. This case describes a 26-year old woman diagnosed as Hwabyung by HBDIS. She complained chiefly of binge eating and sleep disorder. She also complained of chest discomfort, abdominal discomfort, foreign body sensation in the throat, burning sensation and so on. We treated the patient with herbal medication, acupuncture, cupping, and moxa. After treatment, her condition improved. Standardized patients (SP) were used in teaching and practicing interviewing and physical examination skills for This report suggests that traditional Korean treatment such as herbal medication, acupuncture, cupping, moxa is effective for the treatment of Hwabyung patients.

Treatment of Wrinkles with Oriental Medicine (주름 치료의 한의학적 고찰)

  • Background and Objective : Wrinkle treatment with oriental medicine is popular these days. But there are few reports about it. This study is performed to introduce wrinkle treatment with oriental medicine. Methods : We searched the oriental literature and reports related with wrinkles and wrinkle treatment. We study about treatment methods with Oriental Medicine like herbal medicines, acupuncture, cupping, moxibustion, etc. Result and Conclusions : Among the treatment method, acupuncture seems to use wound care mechanism. We propose oriental medicine as an effective and beneficial therapy for wrinkle treatment.
