A systematic procedure to evaluate fatigue damages and to predict remaining fatigue lives is introduced for a steel railway bridge. Fatigue damages are evaluated by using the currently available fatigue damage theory. Fatigue lives with the condition of fatigue crack initiation are estimated by the probabilistic approach based on the reliability theory as well as the simplified procedure. A equivalent deterministic procedure is also suggested to assess the remaining fatigue life under various traffic conditions. Numerical simulations are used to assess dynamic stress histories with correction factors. Loading models are obtained from the passenger volume data. Train coincidences are also considered. Based on the results, the fatigue life is found to be underestimated by without considering the coincidence of trains on the bridge. The simplified method proposed in this study are found to yield approximately the same results as the systematic procedure.
Strengthening with near surface mounted carbon fibre reinforced polymers (NSM-CFRP) is a strengthening technique that have been used for several decades to increase the load carrying capacity of reinforced concrete members. In Iraq, many concrete buildings and bridges were subjected to a wide range of damage as a result of the last war and many other events. Accordingly, there is a progressive increase in the strengthening of concrete structures, bridges in particular, by using CFRP strengthening techniques. Near-surface mounted carbon fibre polymer has been recently proved as a powerful strengthening technique in which the CFRP strips are sufficiently protected against external environmental conditions especially the high-temperature rates in Iraq. However, this technique has not been examined yet under repeated loading conditions such as traffic loads on bridge girders. The main objective of this research was to investigate the effectiveness of NSM-CFRP strips in reinforced concrete beams under repeated loads. Different parameters such as the number of strips, groove size, and two types of bonding materials (epoxy resin and cement-based adhesive) were considered. Fifteen NSM-CFRP strengthened beams were tested under concentrated monotonic and repeated loadings. Three beams were non-strengthened as reference specimens while the remaining were strengthened with NSM-CFRP strips and divided into three groups. Each group comprises two beams tested under monotonic loads and used as control for those tested under repeated loads in the same group. The experimental results are discussed in terms of load-deflection behavior up to failure, ductility factor, cumulative energy absorption, number of cycles to failure, and the mode of failure. The test results proved that strengthening with NSM-CFRP strips increased both the flexural strength and stiffness of the tested beams. An increase in load carrying capacity was obtained in a range of (1.47 to 4.49) times that for the non-strengthened specimens. Also, the increase in total area of CFRPs showed a slight increase in flexural capacity of (1.02) times the value of the control strengthened one tested under repeated loading. Increasing the total area of CFRP strips resulted in a reduction in ductility factor reached to (0.71) while the cumulative energy absorption increased by (1.22) times the values of the strengthened reference specimens tested under repeated loading. Moreover, the replacement of epoxy resin with cement-based adhesive as a bonding material exhibited higher ductility than specimen with epoxy resin tested under monotonic and repeated loading.

In this study, fatigue growth behavior of the transverse crack, which was the most dangerous damage among the various types of rail defects, was investigated using the notched keyhole specimen under constant amplitude loadings. Fatigue limit of smooth specimen in rail steel at R=0 was 110MPa, and the fatigue crack initiation life in the region of the low stress amplitude (ie. long life) occupied the major portion of the total fatigue life. The fatigue strength under variable amplitude loading was converted to the equivalent fatigue strength based upon. Miners rule, which was estimated approximately 9% lower than that under constant amplitude loading. Also, in the low ΔK(sub)rms region ($\leq$21MPa√m), fatigue crack growth rate (da/dN) under constant amplitude loading was higher than that under variable amplitude loading, whereas the tendency was reversed in the high ΔK(sub)rms region. It is believed that this behavior is due to the transition of fracture appearance.
In the present study, an innovative steel bracket and haunch hybrid scheme is devised, for retrofitting of earthquake damaged deficient beam-column sub-assemblages. Formulations are presented for evaluating haunch force factor under combined load case of lateral and gravity loads for the design of double haunch retrofit. The strength hierarchies of control and retrofitted beam-column sub-assemblages are established to showcase the efficacy of the retrofit in reversing the undesirable strength hierarchy. Further, the efficacy of the proposed retrofit scheme is demonstrated through experimental investigations carried out on gravity load designed (GLD), non-ductile and ductile detailed beam-column sub-assemblages which were damaged under reverse cyclic loading. The maximum load carried by repaired and retrofitted GLD specimen in positive and negative cycle is 12% and 28% respectively higher than that of the control GLD specimen. Further, the retrofitted GLD specimen sustained load up to drift ratio of 5.88% compared with 2.94% drift sustained by control GLD specimen. Repaired and retrofitted non-ductile specimen, could attain the displacement ductility of three during positive cycle of loading and showed improved ductility well above the expected displacement ductility of three during negative cycle. The hybrid haunch retrofit restored the load carrying capacity of damaged ductile specimen to the original level of control specimen and improved the ductility closer to the expected displacement ductility of five. The total cumulative energy dissipated by repaired and retrofitted GLD, non-ductile and ductile specimens are respectively 6.5 times, 2.31 times, 1.21 times that of the corresponding undamaged control specimens. Further, the damage indices of the repaired and retrofitted specimens are found to be lower than that of the corresponding control specimens. The novel and innovative steel bracket and haunch hybrid retrofit scheme proposed in the present study demonstrated its effectiveness by attaining the required displacement ductility and load carrying capacity and would be an excellent candidate for post-earthquake retrofit of damaged existing RC structures designed according to different design evolutions.
Fatigue life prediction methodology of the rubber component made of vulcanized natural rubber under variable amplitude loadings was studied. The displacement-controlled fatigue tests were conducted at different levels and the maximum Green-Lagrange strain was selected as damage parameters. A fatigue life curve of the rubber represented by the maximum Green-Lagrange strain was determined from the nonlinear finite element analysis. The transmission load history of SAE as variable amplitude loading was used to perform the fatigue life prediction. And then a signal processing of variable loading by racetrack and simplified rainflow cycle counting methods were performed. The modified miner's rule as cumulative damage summation was used. Finally, when the gate value is 30%, the predicted fatigue life of the rubber component agreed well with the experimental fatigue lives with a factor of two.

Purpose: This study was conducted to develop an instrument to measure coping in emergency situations. Methods: The process included construction of a conceptual framework, generation 60 primary items, verification of construct validity and extraction of final items. The.60 preliminary items were reviewed for content validity by seven experts and were tested to evaluate inter-item correlation coefficient by three groups of elementary school students. From November 1 to December 10, 2008, data were collected from 920 elementary school students according to residential characters (major city, small town, rural area). Item analysis, factor analysis with rotation Varimax and Cronbach's alpha were used to analyze the data. Results: 1) There were 45 items in the final instrument categorized into 8 factors. 2) The factors were labeled as "Call for help and check" (8 items), "Care for common symptoms" (6 items), "Appropriate response for the situation" (5 items), "Evacuation" (6 items), "Care for tissue damage" (8 items), "Care for injury by heat, cold or foreign body" (6 items), "Offer help" (4 items) and "Rescue & escape" (2 items). 3) Cumulative percent of variance was 53.10% and eigen values ranged from 1.04 to 13.38. 4) Cronbach's alpha for the total was .943 and ranged from .527 to .869. Conclusion: Validity and reliability of the scale are confirmed in this study showing its utility for measuring coping in emergency situations with elementary school students. Utilization of the scale will also contribute to designing appropriate coping education programs for elementary school students.
The goal of this study was to develop an accelerated life test for an implement working pump for an agricultural tractor. The field experiments were conducted to measure the load of an implement working pump during major agricultural operations such as plow tillage, rotary tillage, baler operations, and wrapping operations. The measurement system for an implement working pump load was constructed using a pressure sensor, the engine rotational speed, and the hitch pump displacement. The measured implement working pump load was calculated as an equivalent load for each agricultural operation using the Palmgren-Miner rule, which is a cumulative damage method. The equivalent load was calculated using the total load data and peak load data when the total data included the operation of an implement working. The annual usage time of the agricultural tractor was applied to develop two integrated equivalent loads. The acceleration factor was calculated to develop an accelerated life test and was calculated from the two integrated equivalent loads, the maximum pressure, and the flow rate conditions of the hitch pump. In Korea, the warranty life of a tractor is 2,736 hours, and the time required for the test to guarantee the operational life of tractors was calculated as 7,561 hours. The acceleration factors were calculated as 453.6 and 38.3, respectively, from the total load data and peak load data. The fatigue test time can be shortened by 16.7 and 197.4 hours according to the result of the acceleration factors.

The estimation of the fatigue design life for large welded structures is usually performed using the liner cumulative damage method such as Palmgren-Miner rule or the equivalent damage method. When a fatigue crack is detected in a welded steel structure, the residual service life has to be estimated base on S-N curve method and liner elastic fracture mechanics. In this study, to examine the 3D fatigue crack behavior and estimate the fatigue life of out-of-plane gusset fillet welded joint, the fatigue tests were carried out on the model specimens. Investigations of three-dimensional fatigue crack propagation on gusset welded joint was used the finite element analysis of FEMAP with NX NASTRAN and FRANC3D. Fatigue crack growth analysis was carried out to demonstrate the effects of aspect ratio, initial crack length and stress ratio on out-of-plane gusset welded joints. In addition, the crack behaviors of fatigue tests were compared with those of the 3D crack propagation analysis in terms of changes in crack length and aspect ratio. From this analysis result, SIFs behaviors and crack propagation rate of gusset welded joint were shown to be similar fatigue test results and the fatigue life can also be predicted.

Recent intensification of climate change has led to an increase in damages caused by droughts. Currently, in Korea, the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) is used as a criterion to classify the intensity of droughts. Based on the accumulated precipitation over the past six months (SPI-6), meteorological drought intensities are classified into four categories: concern, caution, alert, and severe. However, there is a limitation in classifying drought intensity solely based on precipitation. To overcome the limitations of the meteorological drought warning criteria based on SPI, this study collected emergency water supply damage data from the National Drought Information Portal (NDIP) to classify drought intensity. Factors of SPI, such as precipitation, and factors used to calculate evapotranspiration, such as temperature and humidity, were indexed using min-max normalization. Coefficients for each factor were determined based on the Genetic Algorithm (GA). The drought intensity based on emergency water supply was used as the dependent variable, and the coefficients of each meteorological factor determined by GA were used as coefficients to derive a new Drought Severity Classification Index (DSCI). After deriving the DSCI, cumulative distribution functions were used to present intensity stage classification boundaries. It is anticipated that using the proposed DSCI in this study will allow for more accurate drought intensity classification than the traditional SPI, supporting decision-making for disaster management personnel.
Inundation damage is increasing every year due to localized heavy rain and an increase of rainfall exceeding the design frequency. Accordingly, the importance of hydraulic structures for flood control and defense is also increasing. The hydraulic structures are designed according to its purpose and performance, and the amount of flood is an important calculation factor. However, in Korea, design rainfall is used as input data for hydrological analysis for the design of hydraulic structures due to the lack of sufficient data and the lack of reliability of observation data. Accurate probability rainfall and its temporal distribution are important factors to estimate the design rainfall. In practice, the regression equation of temporal distribution for the design rainfall is calculated using the cumulative rainfall percentage of Huff's quartile method. In addition, the 6th order polynomial regression equation which shows high overall accuracy, is uniformly used. In this study, the optimized regression equation of temporal distribution is derived using the variable selection method according to the principle of parsimony in statistical modeling. The derived regression equation of temporal distribution is verified through the significance test. As a result of this study, it is most appropriate to derive the regression equation of temporal distribution using the stepwise selection method, which has the advantages of both forward selection and backward elimination.
