Cultural Policy of English Language Education in South Korea

  • We aimed to understand how English textbooks in Korea reflect English education policies for improving the English language learners' cultural ability. In order to achieve the purpose of this study, we used the method of analyzing English textbooks because English textbooks are an important tool that most specifically reflects the English policy of a country. This study analyzed middle school English textbooks currently used in Korea. We analyzed nouns/pronouns related to cultures presented in the reading section included in each unit, and compared cultural diversity and cultural identity included in English textbooks in Korea. As a result, it was found that Korea tried to introduce the diverse cultures from the world and promote Korean traditional cultures into the world. So the cultural policy of English education in Korea can be evaluated to be appropriate for cultivating Korea young learners with the cultural capabilities which are essential to be successful leaders in the globalized world.

  • 다문화 사회와 다민족 국가의 도래는 새로운 시대적 변화이자 현상이다. 한국에 거주하는 이주민이 140만명이 넘는 사회적 변화는 한국적 상황에 적합한 새로운 이론과 정책의 필요성이 대두되었고, 우리나라 보다 먼저 다문화 사회로의 변화를 겪은 일본의 정책적 변화과정을 살펴보는 것은 매우 의미 있는 일이다. 본 연구에서는 한일 양국 간의 다문화정책의 추진이유, 법 제도 변화와 정책들을 비교분석하여 특징 및 차이점들을 알아 본 후 시사점을 도출하고 한국 상황에 맞는 새로운 다문화 정책 이론을 제시하였다. 새로운 한국적 다문화 정책은 첫째, 다양성 수용과 상호인정 둘째, 사회적 합의를 통한 정책의 방향성 수립 셋째, 다문화 규칙의 수립으로 경제적 규칙 및 정치적 규칙을 정립해야 할 것이다.

The Development of Science Education Program Based on Culturally Responsive Teaching

  • The purpose of this study was to design a development frame for multicultural science program and develop a corresponding program using the frame. This study organized a development frame to design a multicultural science education program based on the culturally responsive teaching theory. This development frame consisted of the elements of purpose, teaching examples, teaching and learning methods, and assessment. This program consisted of the guideline for class teaching courses, reading materials, student worksheet, and teachers' reference materials. Based on this development frame, a multicultural science education program was developed, which was comprised of seven activities for elementary and middle school students. Each activity of the program included the concept and inquiry related to science education. In particular, by connecting the concept of science with the cultural characteristics of various countries, the activity made students aware of cultural diversity and the commonness of science principles. Compared to other subjects, the science education field has not actively undertaken studies on multicultural education. In term of dealing with universal principles, science education is suitable for making students aware of commonness. Accordingly, this gives rise to the need to draw cultural characteristics based on basic studies such as the analysis of science textbooks in various countries and develop culturally responsive programs utilizing the outcomes.

베이징 국제 섬유비엔날레에 관한 연구 -한국, 중국, 일본의 출품작을 중심으로- (Research on the Beijing International Fiber Art Biennale -Focused on Entries from Korea, China and Japan-)

  • This paper is a study of culture and identity expressed in textile art works of the age of globalization, centering on the Beijing International Fiber Art Biennale. This study began with the idea that globalism would develop regional cultural diversity as well as contribute to the field of art. In 2000, the Beijing International Fiber Art Biennale held its first large exhibition, and a total of 10 biennales were held from then until 2018. Get an understanding of the Beijing International fiber art Biennale, and select award-winning works from one to ten times to learn about cultural characteristics and identity. The analysis was based on the works of awards from China and Japan, including Korea, which are the center of East Asian culture. The Beijing International Fiber Art Biennale has steadily increased the number of participating countries, writers and works, and once again opened the stage for the revival of textile art following the Lausanne International Tapestry Biennale. Through the Beijing International Fiber Art Biennale, textile artists hope to promote world harmony in textile art, respect cultural diversity and conduct equal dialogue between East and West cultures.

세계중요농업유산(GIAHS) 등재지역 농업유산의 특성 분석 (Analysis on Characteristics of Agricultural Heritage in GIAHS sites)

  • Since FAO introduced the Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems(GIAHS) in 2002, 36 sites of 15 countries so far have been listed on GIAHS. This study aims to find the important agricultural heritages of Korea and to prepare the methods for them to be selected as GIAHS. We have analyzed the proposals of the 36 GIAHS listed in order to study the characteristics of their components of the agricultural heritage which worked for being selected. To analyze the components of the agricultural heritage first, agricultural heritage was classified into 13 types and 42 components in light of GIAHS criteria. Then central themes were set to analyze the relevant contents in the proposals. They were, the type of GIAHS Site, significant agricultural landscape, the agriculture-forestry-fisheries-livestock linkage systems, the multi-layered, inter-cropping, circulation cultivation systems, the soil and water management systems, the conservation of agrobiological diversity and genetic resources, the history of the agricultural heritage, the succession of traditional farming techniques, the cultural diversity and so on. Most GIAHS are located in mountains, grasslands, rivers and coasts, desert than in plains, through which GIAHS assure us that it is the heritage of human challenge to overcome the harsh geographic environment and maintain a livelihood. In these sites the traditional farming techniques are carried on, such as mountain clearings, terraced rice paddies, and burn fields, and the unique irrigation systems and agricultural landscapes are well maintained, and the eco-friendly traditional farming techniques utilizing abundant forest resources and agriculture are well handed down. The origin or home of crop growing, a variety of genetic crop storage, the world's largest crop producer and preserving cultural diversity are also important factors for the selection.

  • A view of cultural heritage as a form of capital considers the long term, dynamic, evolutionary, inter-temporal and inter-generational aspects of cultural heritage. The principles of sustainability provide a basis on the broader issue of culture in economic development. They might be capable of specifying a pattern of development that is "culturally sustainable" in the same way as somewhat similar set of criteria derived for the natural world, the criteria for defining ecologically and environmentally sustainable development. Thus we might accept the principles of material and non-material advancement, intergenerational and intra-generational equity, the maintenance of cultural diversity, the precautionary principle, and the recognition of system interdependence as benchmarks in assessing a cultural development process.

  • 한국 영화산업에서 '다양성 영화'는 '저예산영화', '독립·예술영화' 등과 혼용되어 사용됐다. 영화의 개념이 온오프라인의 멀티플랫폼 시대로 전환되며 영화산업에서도 미디어 다양성에 대한 논의가 중요해졌다. 이와 함께 영화산업에서 소수자에 대한 포용성과 다양성을 확대하려는 움직임 역시 뚜렷하다. 최근 세계 영화산업은 활발해진 여성서사와 여성 핵심창작인력에 대한 성인지 관점의 연구와 정책을 기반으로 포용성 영화정책을 수용하며 발전해 가는 중이다. 본 연구는 영화산업을 둘러싼 여러 가지 차원의 다양성에 대한 선행연구와 논의를 바탕으로 한국 영화산업에서 다양성 개념을 재정립하고 소수자에 대한 포용성과 다양성을 확대하기 위한 정책방향을 제언한다.

다문화서비스 담당사서에게 요구되는 문화적 역량의 내용체계에 관한 연구 (Components of Cultural Competency for Multicultural Services Librarians)

  • 최근 한국사회에 외국인근로자, 결혼이주여성, 유학생 등 이주민의 수가 증가하면서 문헌정보학 분야는 새로운 도전에 직면하고 있다. 이주민의 증가는 문헌정보전문직으로 하여금 다양한 문화적 배경을 가진 이주민에게 적절하며 효과적인 서비스를 제공하기 위한 새로운 역량을 개발할 것을 요구한다. 이에, 이 연구에서는 다문화시대, 사서에게 요구되는 역량을 문화적 역량이라는 관점에서 고찰해 보았다. 구체적으로 다문화서비스 담당 사서에게 요구되는 문화적 역량이란 무엇이며, 그 구성요소는 무엇인지 등 사서의 문화적 역량에 대한 내용 체계를 검토하였다. 이를 위해 문헌연구와 다문화서비스를 이행하고 있는 사서, 다문화전문가와의 인터뷰를 통해 관련 데이터를 확보하였다. 연구결과, 사서에게 필요한 문화적 역량은 다문화에 대한 태도, 다문화에 대한 지식, 다문화에 대한 기술이라는 3가지로 구분되었으며, 그 세부적 요소로서 다문화 태도, 다문화구성원에 대한 지식, 다문화서비스에 대한 지식, 장서 서비스 프로그램 개발, 서비스전달, 언어의 다양성, 교육 및 인력개발 부문이 제시되었다.
