Always Learning from Each Other: Cultural Identity Development in Two Generations of Korean Immigrant Fathers

  • Using a life course framework, we compare and contrast the processes of acculturation for first- and second-generation Korean immigrant fathers in the United States. In-depth life history interviews were conducted with 20 first-generation and 15 second-generation fathers in the Midwest. With a modified grounded theory approach of constant comparison, we first explored how these fathers developed their identities in the midst of cultural and social transitions. These men's identity construction was shaped by socio-economic statuses and accessibility to cultural resources, with a marked shift over time toward integration of Korean and American identities. We then examined how these identities informed the men's socialization of their children, and the children's socialization of their parents.

  • This qualitative research was designed to explore the use of housing among Korean Chinese people in Harbin, China. Focusing on the use which based on the epistemology of housing adjustment, this was particularly designed to examine its cultural assimilation and acculturation on the way of life course, it employed the in-depth interview on the oral history of 5 interviewees in their 60s and 70s, individualized interviews were conducted from May 28 to 31 in 2010. Key findings were summarized as follows; 1. The free market reform in China resulted in privatization that allowed respondents to become homeowners, and the ownership was viewed as part of family asset centered upon a sense of solidarity. 2. Although homeowners in multi-story houses were responsible to decorate interior spaces, the common features in using interior spaces were found: entrance had no thresholds; kitchen was small, lack of storage cabinets, tile-flooring; washers were installed inside bathroom; and newly built apartment didn't have proper space to store Korean fermented foods. It was observed that housing adaptation outweighed housing adjustment. Those who used to live in Chinese houses with indoor-wearing-shoes or Russian houses with indoor-wearing-slippers were receptive to the use of dining table and bed, and the community heating system discouraged the use of individual electric water heater because of high electricity cost. 3. In daily life, eating habit wasn't much changed to the Chinese style, meals were shared, dish sterilizer was popular, and Kimchi fridge wasn't used. Because of the influence of the Chinese culture, such Korean traditions as ancestral rites and bedroom allocation tradition faded away, but traditional family values remained unchanged. In conclusion, Korean Chinese people experience normative housing deficits and adaptation selectively incurred. It's implied that residential design meets the needs resulting from the dual culture in terms of cultural assimilation and acculturation.

  • 본 연구는 서울에서 대학재학 및 어학연수중인 외국인 유학생을 대상으로 이문화에 대해 어떤 태도를 갖고 있으며, 문화적응에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 분석하여 이들이 대학생활과 한국생활에 잘 적응하고, 향후 기업의 인적자원으로 활용하기 위한 가이드라인을 제공하고자 한다. 실증분석을 통해 도출된 결과는 첫째, 이문화 태도의 '문화적 거리감'은 '사회관습문화'요인에 영향을 미치고,'문화적 유연성'과 '이문화 인식'은 인간관계요인에 유의적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 이문화 태도에서 '문화적 유연성'과 '이문화 인식'이 한국생활 만족도에 유의적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 체류기간이 3-4년 정도인 유학생은 '사회관습'요인, 2-3년은 '전통문화'요인을 가장 높게 인지하는 것으로 나타났다. 넷째, 외향적인 성향과 여성이 '인간관계'요인, 동양인이 '생활문화'요인을 더 높게 인지하는 것으로 나타났다.

다문화가정 아동의 언어능력과 부모-자녀 응집성이 자아존중감 및 문화적응에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Korean Proficiency and Parent-child Cohesion on Self-esteem and Acculturation among Children from Multicultural Families)

  • Purpose: There is evidence that parent-child cohesion is a potentially influential factor in children's self-esteem and acculturation. However, no research to date has examined cohesion with parents as a potential pathway between Korean proficiency and self-esteem or acculturation among children from multicultural families. This study was done to address these limitations by examining whether and to what extent cohesion with parents mediated the effect of Korean proficiency on self-esteem and acculturation among children from multicultural families. Methods: Data were collected from a sample of 138 mothers and their children living in Seoul, Daegu, Kyungi province, and Kyungpook province. Multiple regression analysis was used to examine the relationships between the variables of interest. Mediation effects of cohesion with parents were tested by following the procedure recommended by Baron and Kenny (1986). Results: Cohesion with parents partially mediated the relationship between Korean proficiency and self-esteem. For children's acculturation, the effect of Korean proficiency was partially mediated through father-child cohesion. Mother-child cohesion completely mediated the relationship between Korean proficiency and acculturation. Conclusion: These findings suggest that to help children from multicultural families experiencing difficulties with self-esteem or acculturation, it might be useful to develop programs that are aimed at strengthen cohesion with parents.

다문화가족 청소년의 사회적 자본 및 문화변용스트레스가 학교적응에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Social Capital and Acculturation Stress on School Adaptation of Adolescents of Multi-cultural Family)

  • 본 연구는 다문화가족 청소년 185명을 대상으로 그들의 사회적 자본과 문화변용스트레스 수준을 측정하고 이것이 학교적응에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 본 연구의 주요결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 조사대상자들의 사회적 자본수준을 측정한 결과 그 평균이 2.24(SD=.32)로 나타나 보통수준보다 낮은 것으로 조사되었으며, 그들의 문화변용스트레스는 2.54(SD=.58)로 나타나 보통수준보다 조금 더 높은 것으로 조사되었다. 둘째, 조사대상자의 학교적응 수준은 2.26(SD=.39)로 조사되어 보통수준보다 낮은 것으로 나타났으며, 학년, 학업수준, 경제수준, 동거부모 형태, 모 한국어 능력 등에 따라 학교적응은 집단별로 통계적으로 유의미한 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 조사대상자의 사회적 자본의 네트워크(${\beta}$=.225), 모 한국어 능력(${\beta}$=.195), 문화변용스트레스(${\beta}$=-.175), 사회적 자본의 대인신뢰(${\beta}$=.171) 및 규범(${\beta}$=.161), 동거부모 형태(${\beta}$=.156), 학업수준(${\beta}$=.151), 경제수준(${\beta}$=.145) 등의 순서로 학교적응에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 연구결과에 기초하여 정보통신의 적극적으로 활용으로 다양한 집단의 참여와 교류를 유도하고 대인간의 신뢰구축 및 네트워크 형성을 도모하며, 다양한 콘텐츠를 개발하고 이용하여 다문화수용성을 제고하는 등의 방안을 제언하였다.

국제결혼가정 아동의 문화정체감과 문화적응유형 및 심리사회적 적응에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Cultural Identity, Acculturation Patterns and Psychosocial Adjustment of Children in International Marriage Families)

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between cultural identity and the psychosocial adjustment levels of children in international marriage families by focusing on the effects that different types of cultural identity have on children's overall psychosocial adjustment. The data for this study came from a survey conducted on 122 third to sixth grades children with foreign mothers living in Seoul and Gyeonggi-Do. As a result, it was found that children's identification with Korean culture was on average higher than their identification with their mother's culture. Secondly, in terms of identity type, assimilation and separation types appeared to be the most dominant, followed by the integration and marginalization types. Finally, it was found that cultural identities had significant effects on children's psychosocial adjustment in international marriage families. In particular, the level of self-esteem was the highest for children in the integrated group, while it was the lowest for those in the marginalized group. These results indicate that identification with the mother's culture is just as important as one's Korean identity when it comes to determining the degree of psychosocial adjustment of children in international marriage families.

다문화가정의 한국 식생활 적응을 위한 식생활관리 행동 (Meal Management Behaviors for Korean Dietary Acculturation of Multicultural Families)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze meal management behaviors for Korea dietary acculturation among multicultural families in Korea. The study compared differences in meal management behaviors among 90 multicultural families. Results of the study were as follows: cultural adaptation to Korea got higher with increasing age; marriage immigrants with longer marriage duration and with children showed higher cultural adaptation to Korea. Regarding food value of marriage immigrant women, 'eating favorite food' was the highest in the 20s, while 'satisfaction with Korean dietary lifestyle' was high in Chinese and in those with longer residency. Most of them replied 'myself' for the meal manager of their multicultural family. When surveyed on major difficulties in Korean meal management, existence of children showed significant difference for 'cooking', and period of residency and existence of children made significant difference for 'taste'. In conclusion, meal management behavior of multicultural families was influenced by socioeconomic factors. Further research is needed for more quantitative analysis and understanding of the effect of dietary patterns on nutritional status and quality of life in multicultural families.

출신성분에 따른 탈북여성의 문화적응 기제에 관한 비교분석 (The Synthetic comparative analysis of cultural Acculturation mechanism from North Korean women Elite-class in South Korea)

  • 본 연구는 현재 남한에 입국한 북한이탈주민의 71% 이상을 차지하고 있는 탈북여성의 남한사회 적응과 관련하여 출신성분에 따른 Berry의 문화적응 이론의 재검증을 시도한 연구이다. 이를 위해 북한의 출신성분제도, Berry의 문화적응 이론, 관련 선행 연구들을 검토하였고 IRB심의가 끝난 2014년 12월 15일~2015년 2월 30일까지 FGI 및 설문조사를 통해 탈북여성이 겪는 사회적 정체감과 문화적 유능감을 밝혀보고자 연구를 수행하였다. 연구결과 출신성분에 따른 남 북한정체감(심리적 문화적응 전략), 문화적 유능감, 지각된 동화 압력, 문화이질감의 차이가 없는 것으로 나타났으며 문화적응은 개별적인 사례 특성에 따라 다른 것임을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 연구결과에 기반하여 구체화된 발전과제를 제시하였으며 본 연구의 의의와 함께 후속연구의 과제를 제안하였다.

여성결혼이민자가 체험한 교육문화와 문화적응에 관한 질적 사례연구 (A Qualitative Case Study on the Educational Culture Experienced by Married Immigrant Women and their Acculturation)

  • This study investigated the educational culture experienced by married immigrant women in their own country, as well as their internalizing process of the educational culture in Korea, using a qualitative case study. The purpose of this study was to help married immigrant women solve the problem of acculturation based on their own educational and cultural experiences and to overcome limitations of previous studies, which dealt with the problem of acculturation superficially. Participants were 17 married immigrant women from eight countries who resided in Jeonnam and Jeonbuk provinces. They were selected by the sampling strategy of maximum variation. Data were collected through archives and in-depth interviews and analyzed using within-case analysis and cross-case analysis. The results showed that married immigrant women had no experience of attending private institutions and had good memories of their school life. Based on these kinds of experiences, they criticized Korean mothers who urged their children to attend private institutions. They respected their children's opinions and allowed their children to select private institutions. Despite married immigrant women apparently suffering from acculturation, they educate their children according to their own philosophy and method of education. That is, they solve the problem of acculturation actively and independently. Consequently, in order to help married immigrant women solve the problem of acculturation, it is necessary to respect the difference in the cultures and frame a system that develops the activity and subjectivity of married immigrant women.

해외거주 귀국 대학생들의 "모국" 문화재적응: 문화정체성을 중심으로 (College Students' Re-Acculturation to their "Home" Country: Focusing on their Cultural Identity)

  • 현대 한국의 문화적, 인종적 다양성이 크게 증가하는 가운데, 일정기간 해외 거주 후 한국으로 귀국함으로써 한국사회 내의 문화적 다양성을 증가시키는 인구가 있다. 특히 매년 2만명이 넘는 학령기 해외거주 귀국자들 중 한국에서 대학교에 진학한 학생들을 대상으로 심층면접을 실시하여 그들의 문화(재)적응 과정을 조사하였다. 해외거주 기간을 5년 이상으로 한정하여, 15명(남7명, 여 8명)의 귀국대학생을 면접한 결과, 11개의 주제가 도출되었다. 이 주제들은 크게 2개의 대분류로 나뉘었는데, 귀국학생들의 과거 경험이 다문화 사회의 일원으로서 살아가는 데에 자산으로 기능한 경우와, 반대로 다양한 문화적 경험이 오히려 개인의 문화적 정체성을 형성하는 데에 방해가 된 경우가 그것이다. 어느 부류에 속하는가를 결정짓는 변인은 한국인으로서의 문화적 정체성과 "경험에 대한 개방성"이라는 성격특질인 것으로 나타났다. 문화적 정체성은 다른 주제들의 유기적 관련성을 이어주는 핵심이었고, 경험에 대한 개방성은 회상적 연구의 특성 상 연구참가자들이 지난 경험에 대해 선택적인 기억을 하고 이를 통합하는 과정에서 사용된 인지적 책략일 수도 있음을 논하였다. 사회적 환경과 개인의 성격특질이 교차적으로 작용하는 단면으로서의 문화(재)적응 현상을 관찰한 결과들을 토대로, 현대 한국사회의 문화적 다양성을 연구하는 데 있어서의 함의 및 적용점을 논하였다.
