  • The importance of plant factory which blend agriculture and manufacture has been discussed widely. This company has researched hydroponics technique for cultivation which has been mainly developed in the sites of Okinawa and Hyougo Prefecture. In 1987, we stopped the previous research there, and started a new one far plant factory at the Agricultural Research Center of Chiba Prefecture. In 1989, we built four experimental plant factories (120㎡) at Chiba Oil Factory Refinery in Ichihara-city, developing techniques of cultivation, equipment production and environmental control for cultivation system of tomato, strawberry and leaf vegetables. • In this paper, a new approach to the automation of the cultivation in a green house is suggested and a practical automatic control cultivation system is implemented. To automatically control and optimize the very nonlinear and time-varying growth of farm products, a hybrid strategy(FECA, Fuzzy Expertized Control Algorithm) is proposed which serially combines a fuzzy expert system with the fuzzy logic control. The fuzzy expert system(FMES, Fuzzy Model-based Expert System is intended to overcome the non-linearity of the growth of farm products. The part of fuzzy controller(FLC, Fuzzy Logic Controller) is incorporated to solve the time-variance of the growth of farm products. Finally, the efficiency and the effectiveness of the implemented agricultural automation system is presented through the cultivation results.

  • Wood-cultivated ginseng, including roots in its dried form, is produced in forest land without using artificial facilities such as light barriers. To identify suitable sites for the propagation of wood-cultivated ginseng, factor combination technique (FCT) and linear combination technique (LCT) were used with geographic information system and the results were superimposed onto an actual wood-cultivated ginseng plantation. The LCT more extensively searched for suitable sites of cultivation than that by the FCT; further, the LCT probed wide areas considering the predominance of precipitous mountains in Korea. In addition, the LCT showed the much higher degree of overlap with the actual cultivation sites; therefore, the LCT more comprehensively reflects the cultivator's intention for site selection. On the other hand, the inclusion of additional factors for the selection of suitable cultivation sites and experts' opinions may enhance the effectiveness and accuracy of the LCT for site application.

  • This study was conducted to develop the hanging type circular-patterned system that at maximizing the spatial efficiency of strawberry cultivation to increase yields, while also reducing labor and improving energy efficiency. The system consists of a cultivation bed units, longitudinal moving device, bed lifting device, front and rear transfer devices, lateral transfer device, nutrient supply device, and control unit. Performance testing revealed that the operational motor for longitudinal movement should have a torque of at least 0.1Nm based on the design weight and traction force of the cultivation bed unit. The power consumption required to move one cycle was calculated to be approximately 149Wh when performing harvesting or maintenance tasks for all 10 cultivation beds. Vibration angles measured during bed movement showed that the lateral transfer resulted in a roll angle ranging from -0.62° to 0.68° and a pitch angle ranging from -3.79° to 5.26°. For longitudinal transfer, the roll angle ranged from -3.37° to 3.36°, and the pitch angle ranged from -0.45° to 0.49°.

  • Recently, the rice growing time was extended by the global warming. This study was conducted to investigate the possibility of rice double cropping system in southern Korea. The first transplanting was with six cultivars ('Kilala397', 'Baekilmi', 'Joun', 'Hanseol' and 'Jungmo1031') on April 15. All cultivars could be harvested at the end of July. Adaptable cultivars for the first cultivation were 'Kilala397', Baekilmi' and 'Joun'. The rice yields at the first cultivation was about 95% of local average yield. Although the yield was slightly less, the first cultivation was considered to have economic benefits, because of the high market price of rice. In the second transplanting was with five cultivars ('Manjong', 'Joun', 'Deabo', 'Jinok' and 'Kilala397') on April 15. All cultivars could be harvested in early November. Adaptable cultivars for the second cultivation were 'Jinok' and 'Kilala397'. The rice yields at the second cultivation was about below the 60% of local average yield, because there was the less growth than normal season cultivation. Consequently, southern Korea' annual rice double cropping system is considered to have no economic value yet. However, the research should be continued considering the temperature rise of global warming.

  • A new cultivation diary system based on environment sensor data and Web 2.0 with Flex is suggested, to improve the previous system using the subjective data of cultivators. The proposed system is designed by applying an object-oriented model called mini-architecture, in order to enhance the reliability of software as well as promote stability to overall system design. The environment sensor data such as temperature and humidity are used to develop the new reliable diary. Also, an active interface based on Web 2.0 and Android as the user GUI are implemented to maximize the convenience while recording the cultivation diary. The result of the performance evaluation shows that the data from sensors has 99.1% of correlation with that of analogue.

  • An Aero-NFT nutriculture system using microcomputer for cultivation of greenhouse melon was developed and the performance of the system was evaluated through experiments. The system could control temperature, EC and pH of the nutrient solution within the error ranges of $\pm$ 0.2$^{\circ}C$, $\pm$ 0.2 mS/cm, $\pm$ 0.1 pH, respectively. The results of cultivation experiment showed that temperature, EC and pH of the nutrient solution were generally controlled within the setting ranges during cultivation period. The growth results were good until pinching, but the fruit quality of melons was not high except sweetness and shape. To optimize performance of the system, more techlical information for nutriculture of greenhouse melon was needed.
