This experiment was conducted to evaluate on agronomic traits of Korean local adlay (Coix lachryma L.) germplasm, 281 cultivars (lines). The largest collected cultivars was from Kyungsangbukdo (56 cultivars), and the next was in the order of Cheonlabukdo (48 cultivars), Kyungsangnamdo (44 cultivars), Kyunggido (39 cultivars) Chungcheongnamdo (23 cultivars), Kangwondo (23 cultivars), Cheonlanamdo (17 cultivars), and Chungcheongbukdo (16 cultivars) in distribution of collected region for 281 cultivars. In the growth stages, days to emergence from seeding were required $16.4{\pm}2.03$ days, days to heading from emergence was required $73.6{\pm}5.87$ days, days to ripening from heading was required $52.3{\pm}4.91$ days and cultivation period was required $142.5{\pm}5.87$ days. Culm length was $210.3{\pm}16.39$ cm, no. of tiller per plant was $10.4{\pm}2.13$, culm diameter was $11.7{\pm}1.09$ mm, fruiting position was $4.6{\pm}0.82$ node, no. of main culm node was $11.1{\pm}0.78$, degree of lodging was $5.3{\pm}3.42$ and severity of leaf blight was $56.1{\pm}0.78$ in the growth characteristics of the germplasm. In the yield of component, no. of grains per $m^2$ was $5,938{\pm}2,152$, percentage of ripening was $67.7{\pm}33.12$, 1,000 grains weight was $123.8{\pm}33.76$ g and grain weight was $473.0{\pm}207.90$ g. Grain weight was correlates significantly positively with no. of main culm node, percentage of ripening and no. of grains per $m^2$ among agronomic traits. Correlation coefficient between grain weight and 1,000 grain weight was positive, while grain weight and severity of leaf blight was significantly negative. Correlation coefficient between grain weight and days to ripening from heading was significant negatively.
The growth characteristics and appropriate fertilizer-managements in the rejuvenating bamboo grove were studied with Phyllostachys reticulata. The bamboo soil was the sandy loam with rich humus. In the fertilized plots, the N-fertilizer was significantly absorbed, and it was necessary to fertilize the K-fertilizer continuously. According to the development of rejuvenating after flowering, the temperature and relative illumination became lower. while the moisture became higher. The relationship between the diameter at eye height (D) and the culm length (H) of each bamboo can be expressed as follow; $H=2.5538D^{0.5031}$ The leaf area is the major factor for the production of the bamboo grove. Therefore in the rejuvenating grove, we should refrain form pruning or felling of not -flowering bamboo. The theoretical distribution of the internodal length was obtained by the distribution curve line of the internodal length derived from the regular distribution curve line. Relatively long and even internodal length was found in the fertilized plots 2 and 4. The relation between $D^2H$ and dry weight of culm or dry weight of the above ground part were given by linear regression in both relations respectively on the logarithmic coordinates, but the propertional relation was not established in these relations. The biomass of the above ground part obtained by the allometry method showed high values in the fertilized plots 2.5 and 6. The appropriate amounts of the three elements, N, P and K for the maximum dry matter were 24.19, 15.51, 8.63 kg/10a, respectively.
Bamboo is one of the major biomass resources in the world. To obtain valuable information for effective use of bamboo resources in Korea, the anatomical characteristics of the commercial Korean bamboo species (Phyllostachys pubescens, Phyllostachys nigra, and Phyllostachys bambusoides) were analyzed. The structures in bamboo culm were observed by optical and scanning electron microscopy. Also the crystalline properties as relative crystallinity and crystallite width were measured by an X-ray diffraction method. The three Korean bamboo species had the vascular bundle type I with tylosoid in intercellular space. In the outer part of culm, vascular bundles showed denser spacing than inner part. The fiber length in outer part samples of the three bamboo species showed longer than inner part samples. Furthermore, the fiber length showed a significant difference between inner part and outer part in three bamboo species, showing the longest fiber length in Phyllostachys bambusoides. Phyllostachys pubescens showed the greatest diameter in vessel and parenchyma on cross section. Parenchyma cells in Phyllostachys pubescens and Phyllostachys bambusoides showed similar length and width in both radial and tangential sections. The relative crystallinity and crystallite width in outer part samples of the three bamboo species showed higher values than those in inner part samples, with the greatest values from Phyllostachys bambusoides.
This survey was carried out to collect the basic informations for the improvement of cultivation in job's tears (Coix lachryma-jobi L.) by investigating the general facts, farming practices, growth characteristics, grain yield, and chemical properties of soil in Yonchon-gun farms. The age of farmers were over 51 and the cultivated area was small. Most farmers were self-laboring and produced seeds on their land. Sowing method was usually drilling by hand, 64% of farms had the density of 2000-3500 plant per 10 a, amount of fertilizer application was diverse and the number of pest control was a few. The averages of plant height, number of main culm node, culm diameter, tiller number of plant, thousand grain weight, and grain yield were 184 cm, 10, 10 mm, 14, 108 g, and 341 kg/10a, respectively. The averages of pH, organic matter, $P_2O_5$, K, and EC of soil after harvest were 5.8, 1.1 g/kg, 385 mg/kg, 0.48 cmol+/kg, and 0.21 dS/m, respectively. Grain yield and hardness were negatively correlated -0.7442 at the level of P=0.01.

The damage of plant growth and alteration of cellular tissues of barley infected by Barley yellow mosaic virus (BaYMV) was explored. The infected plots significantly damaged in all of measured factors by the disease. In severely diseased plant, the viral infection affected on plant growth like as shorten culm length about 25cm, 36% constrained ratio, comparing to healthy. The yield decreased over 70% in diseased plots by fewer numbers of spike and kernel per square meter and spike, respectively. BaYMV constructed typical inclusion body like a pinwheel type inside barley leaves, and the infection affected on cellular elongation or growth not cell division in examined three parts as stem, neck of panicle and node, related to dwarfness of infected barley. The stem tissues were most severely affected on cell growth as restrained epidermis cell length in diameter and vascular bundle size. In neck of panicle tissues, distribution and size of tissues of fiber and cortex parts, respectively, showed differences between healthy and infected plants. In node part, healthy plant showed bigger tissue size as 1.5 times than infected plant. Theses results suggest that BaYMV infection could affect on the cell growth not cell division, and which resulted shorten culm length in plant growth and decreased yield, finally.
Clay-coated rice seeds (clay-coated seeds A and B) were directly sown on dry paddy and their growth and yield were compared with the normal drill-sown seeds on dry flat paddy. In clay-coated seeds, germination was 1 day earlier and the emergence rate was higher up to 5% than that of normal drill-sown seeds. But the apparent number of seedling stand per $m^2$ was lower than that of normal drill-sown seeds, which is due to the smaller amount of seeding in clay-coated seeds. At the early growth stage, the plant height of clay-coated seeds A was taller than that of drill-sown seeds, while the plant height of clay-coated seeds B was 0.7 cm shorter than that of drill-sown seeds. At the late growth stage, however, the difference was insignificant in both cases. The maximum tillering stage was 10 days earlier in drill-sown seeds. Lodging index was the lowest in clay-coated seeds B and there was no difference between clay-coated seeds A and drill-sown seeds. The ratio of stem base weight, culm diameter and culm wall thickness were higher in clay-coated seeds, while the lower internodes (4th, 5th and 6th) length was shorter in claycoated seeds than in drill-sown seeds. In clay-coated seeds, the number of panicle per $m^2$ was smaller, while the number of spikelet per panicle was a little larger than in drill-sown seeds. The rate of ripened grain and brown rice 1,000 grain weight were lower in the clay-coated seeds, thus the yield was $98{\sim}99%$ level of drill-sown seeds. Considering that the amount of seeding in clay-coated seeds was two-thirds of that in drill-sown seeds, it is expected that clay coating method could become an additional technique for direct seeding cultivation.
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of plant number per hill (PNH) on growth and yield of foxtail millet in drained paddy fields. Crop growth, development, and yield in the field were examined for 2 years to assess the efficiency of proposed cropping system. The greatest culm length of 138 and 148 cm in the first and the second year, respectively, at the harvest stage was observed in plots with one plant per hill. The greatest culm diameter of 7.79 and 7.67 mm in the first and second year, respectively, was measured in plots with one plant per hill. The greatest tiller number of foxtail millet in plots with one plant per hill was 2.9 and 2.7 in the first and the second year, respectively. However, there was no significant difference between plots with four and five plant per hill. Among the measured yield components, the spike length and seed number per spike were one plant per hill in both years. The highest grain yield of foxtail millet ($324kg{\cdot}10a^{-1}$ and $333kg{\cdot}10a^{-1}$ in the first and second year, respectively) was obtained from plots with two plants por hill, followed by plots one, three, four, and five plants per hill.
The goal of this study was to investigate how the characteristics of growth and yield are affected by various planting densities in wide-row drill seeding cultivation suitable for mechanized harvesting. Two cultivars ('Hwanggeum' and 'Leebackchal') of proso millet (Panicum miliaceum L.) were planted at varying planting densities [row spacing (20, 30, and 50 cm) and plant spacing (3, 5, 10, and 15 cm)]. The culm length was highest at the planting density of $50{\times}3cm$ and $50{\times}5cm$ for 'Hwanggeum' and $20{\times}3cm$ for 'Leebackchal'. The culm diameter became thinner as the planting density increased. The number of tillering and panicle length showed the same tendency to increase in quantity or length as planting density decreased and was highest at $50{\times}15cm$ when the planting density was lowest. The number of seeds per individual increased as planting density decreased. The thousand grain weight showed no significant differences among treatment plots. The greatest yield of 'Hwanggeum' was obtained at a planting density of $50{\times}3cm$ ($314.9kg{\cdot}10a^{-1}$) and that of 'Leebackchal' was obtained at $50{\times}3cm$ and $50{\times}5cm$ ($358-356kg{\cdot}10a^{-1}$).
In order to find out the effects of the time and degree of defoliation on the seed yield, oil content and fatty acid composition of perilla seed, two cultivars, Namhae and Geumnung, were grown in two years, 1985 and 1987. Defoliation was initiated after 110 days from sowing with two-week interval. Defoliation degree was manipulated into four levels i.e. 0, 25, 50 and 75 per cent based on the total leaf area per plant. The results are summarized as follows: Flowering date, maturing date, culm length, culm diameter and branch numbers were not significantly influenced by the defoliation time and degrees, but by the cultivars. The higher levels of defoliation was made, the lower seed yield and 1000-seed were obtained, and either the earlier or the later time of defoliation, the less influence on seed yield were observed for both cultivars. Severe defoliation caused a significant decrease in oil content. The composition of unsaturated and saturated fatty acids was significantly decreased by severe defoliation (above 25 per cent). In conclusion, with a view to achieving higher seed yield and oil content with good quality, it is advisable to defoliate perilla leaf less than 25 per cent based on total leaf area at either or later growth stages.
This experiment was carried out in the green house at Tokyo University of Agriculture in 1992 to investigate the relationship between lodging resistances and specific morphological characters and to examine the effects of nitrogen top-dressing and growth retardant on changes of the endogenous ethylene content in rice plant. Inabenfide did not affect significantly yield, yield component, chlorophyll content, and $CO_2 assimilation but, decreasing plant height when growth regulators were applied at booting stage, decreasing internode elongation, and increasing culm thickness and diameter of the third and fourth internode. While, nitrogen top-dressing usually showed to effect increasing vegetative growth such as plant height, tiller number, and morphological characteristics but, were not significantly affected the chlorophyll content and $CO_2 assimilation. Ethylene evolution was dramatically changed with nitrogen top-dressing and growth retardant. Application of Inabenfide at 15 days before heading inhibited ethylene evolution in the all nitrogen levels. Higher nitrogen top-dressing showed higher ethylene evolution than that of low nitrogen level. High positive correlation was detected between nitrogen application and ethylene evolution.
