Distribution Patterns of Organophosphorous Insecticide Chlorpyrifos Absorbed from Soil into Cucumber (토양에 잔류된 살충제 Chlorpyrifos의 오이 흡수이행 및 분포 양상)

  • The transfer pattern of chlorpyrifos present in soil to cucumber plants were assessed and reported with plant growth, concentration dependency, and duration. Cucumber seedlings cultivated in a growth chamber for 30 days and a greenhouse for 120 days. Weight and length of cucumbers cultivated in the chamber increased with the increasing time, while the uptake of chlorpyrifos by cucumber increased a period from 0 to 15 days and decreased after 15 days. Uptake rates of chlorpyrifos into a cucumber plant were 1.0~1.3% to initial amounts treated with 20 and 40 mg/kg to soil. Most chlorpyrifos residues were detected in root, followed by stem and leaf. Results of the greenhouse test showed that chlorpyrifos amounts in cucumber fruits were present less than LOQ (0.02 mg/kg), and chlorpyrifos was mainly found in the root of the cucumber plant. Chlorpyrifos absorbed in a cucumber under greenhouse condition was smaller than that in chamber condition as 0.03~0.04%. Degradation patterns of chlorpyrifos in soils were similar during indoor and outdoor tests with half-lives of 25.8~73.0 days. These results may be useful for establishing the management strategy of residual pesticides in soil environment.

Effects of Dietary Protein and Lipid Levels on Growth and Body Composition of Juvenile Sea Cucumber Stichopus japonicus (배합사료의 단백질 및 지질 함량이 어린 돌기해삼 Stichopus japonicus의 성장 및 체조성에 미치는 영향)

  • We investigated the proper dietary protein and lipid levels for growth and body composition of juvenile sea cucumber Stichopus japonicus. Three replicate groups of the sea cucumber(average weight of 1.1 g) were fed the experimental diets containing different levels of protein(10, 20, 30 and 40%) and lipid(3, 7 and 11%) for 10 weeks. At the end of the feeding trial, survival of each group was over 87%, and there was no significant difference among the groups. Weight gain and specific growth rate(SGR) of sea cucumber were significantly affected by dietary protein(P<0.005) and lipid levels(P<0.001). The highest weight gain and SGR were observed when sea cucumber fed the diet containing 30% protein with 3% lipid(P<0.05). Weight gain and SGR of the sea cucumber fed the diet containing 3% lipid were higher than the other groups at the same protein level except for 40% protein group(P<0.05). Protein content of the sea cucumber fed the diet containing 30% protein with 3% lipid was significantly (P<0.05) higher than those fed 20% protein diets with 7% or 11% lipids and 10% protein diet with 7% lipid. Moisture, lipid and ash contents of the whole body were not significantly different among the groups. Fatty acid compositions such as linoleic acid, EPA(20:5n-3) and DHA(22:6n-3) of the whole body were affected by those of dietary lipid sources. The results of this study indicate that the diet containing 30% protein and 3% lipid is optimal for growth of juvenile sea cucumber.

  • Ethaboxam is the first proprietary fungicide developed in Korea, registered in 1998 and commercialized in 1999 by LG Chemical Ltd., Korea. It is a derivative of aminothiazole carboxamide and formulated into 25% wettable powder for practical application in fields. Ethaboxam effectively controlled cucumber downy mildew caused by Pseudoperonospora cubensis, potato late blight caused by Phytophthora infestans, and pepper Phytophthora blight caused by P. capsici, and was superior or comparable to the commercial standards, when foliarly sprayed 3∼5 times until dripping off at approximately 7-day intervals during the growing season. Ethaboxam was required at least 125 mg/liter and 250 mg/liter for effective control of cucumber downy mildew, and potato late blight and pepper Phytophthora blight, respectively. There was not phytotoxicity observed o leaves, stems or fruits of cucumber, potato and pepper from any trial.

A Study on the cucumber growth by soil warming and warmed water irrigation using solar energy system(3) (태양열 시스템을 이용한 가온관수와 지중가온 방법에 의한 오이의 생육 연구(3))

  • This study was carried out to estimate the warmed water irrigation and the warmed soil efficiency on protected cultivation of cucumber in winter season. The water of 28$^{\circ}C$ was continuously supplied for soil warming and that is $25^{\circ}C$ for warmed water irrigation. Cucumber growth was analyzed when tile soil kept up the optimum temperature in the root zone. The cucumber growth are compared with the warmed soil plots. isolated warmed soil plots and non-warmed soil plots. The cucumber growth in warmed soil plots and isolated warmed soil plots were 20~50% higher than non-warmed soil plots compare to that by the warmed irrigation. In the non-warmed soil plots, the stem diameter and the number of leaves in the warmed water irrigation plots are 10% higher than those in the normal water irrigation plots. The yields in isolated warmed soil plots were 37~38% higher than non-warmed soil plots and those in warmed soil plots were 85~96% higher than non-warmed soil plots. The fruit length, weight and diameter in warmed soil plots were 15% higher than those in the non-warmed plots.

  • An expert system to diagnose cucumber's diseases and nutritional disorders(ESCD) was developed using HCLIPS. The knowledge base was made through interviews with farmers who had cultivated cucumbers for years and experts who had a specialty of cucumber's diseases and disorders. The photographs of cucumber's diseases and nutritional disorders were used to assist users to comprehend queries of the ESCD. The ESCD was able to diagnose 11 fungal and bacterial diseases and 10 nutritional disorders, which could be frequently found in the fields and greenhouses. Diagnosis accuracy of the developed ESCD was validated by the farmers and the expert who joined the development.

Development of a Robotic Manipulator for a Cucumber Harvester (오이 수확용 로봇 매니퓰레이터 개발)

  • This study developed a manipulator for robotic harvester to harvest cucumber. The manipulator was designed and built fur transferring an end-effecter from a fixed point to a specified cucumber. Its development involved the integration of a manipulating system with a PC compatible, DC motors, geared boxes, timing belts, and a motor controller board. Software, written in Quick basic. combined the functions of motor control with various circumstances. In order to move smoothly and rapidly the manipulator, it's shoulder link and elbow link were minimized by using rotational inertial moment without a motor and a geared box. After 30 replications of exercising the manipulator, it was concluded that the precision values of the X, Y and Z axes were less than 0.5mm, 7.25mm and 0.35mm, respectively. The precision data indicated the manipulator was not missing any steps fur the harvester to reach a target cucumber.

  • For thestudying and utilizing the thorn sea cucumber synthetically, the method preparing polysaccharide and polypeptide from sea cucumber was studied. The comparatively rational craft for preparing crude polysaccharide is fresh raw materials deal with oar form, $60\%$ of the ethanol precipitate after hydrolyzed by pretense and vibrated with ultrasonic wave auxiliary. The purification of polysaccharide and removal of protein fromcrude polysaccharide were made through precipitation method using the acetate. The polypeptide is obtained by concentrating in vacuum, freeze-drying after mixing precipitations of two times. Polysaccharide acute poisoning experiment indicate there is no bad reaction when LD50>5000g/kg, there strain rate of liver tumor H11 approach present generally acknowledged tumor treat medicine cyclophosphamide, and there is no side effect. The fatigue resistance function of polypeptide experiment also indicates that the fatigue resistance ability of mouse which fed on added sea cucumber polypeptide has a great improvement.

Changes in the Keeping Quality of Strawberry and Cucumber treated with Korean Medical Herb Extracts (대황 및 황련 추출물을 처리한 딸기 및 오이의 저장중 품질 변화)

  • Strawberry and cucumber were dipped with Korean medical herb extracts such as Rheum palmatum L. and Coptis chinensis Franch. to maintain the keeping quality during storage at 5$^{\circ}$C and 10$^{\circ}$C, respectively. Treatment with 500 ppm solutions gor strawberry retarded weight loss, microbial load increase, and decay during storage. Decay ratio was shown 68.8% for control, 45.0% for Rheum palmatum L. and 42.5% for Coptis chinensis Franch. at 10 days. Strawberry treated with Coptis chinensis Franch. showed a higher hardness and soluble solid content than others. Cucumber treated with 1,000 ppm solutions revealed a different O$_2$ and CO$_2$ concentrations after 16 days. Korean medical herb extracts showed an antimicrobial activity for the quality retention of cucumber during storage. Ascorbic acid content was generally increased till 8 days, but decreased thereafter.

  • Biological control of aphids using "banker-plants with the parasitoiid, Aphidius colemani Viereck (BPAC)" was carried out on cucumber in greenhouse. The BPAC consisting of barley seedlings infested with Schiraphis graminum (Rondani) enhanced the early establishment of Aphidius colemani in the greenhouse and prolonged the control of Aphis gossypii on May 8, 2001 The BPAC was placed in the greenhouse at transplanting at the rate of 1 per 30 m2 of cucumber. Although good control effect was gained until early August after placing banker plants on May 9, the effect after then because of high temperature. The aphid population on cucumber in control plots reached to a peak on June 26, and decreased because of entomopathogenic fungus for rainy season of July, and increased again to a very high population on August.

Inactivation of Photosystem I in Cucumber Leaves Exposed to Paraquat-Induced Oxidative Stress

  • Cucumber leaves subjected to light chilling stress exhibit a preferential inactivation of photosystem(PS) I relative to PSII, resulting in the photoinhibition of photosynthesis. In light chilled cucumber leaves, Cu/Zn-Superoxide dismutase(SOD) is regarded as a primary target of the light chilling stress and its inactivation is closely related to the increased production of reactive oxygen species. In the present study, we further explored that inactivation of PSI in cucumber leaves is not a light chilling specific, but general to various oxidative stresses. Oxidative stress in cucumber leaves was induced by treatment of methylviologen(MV), a producer of reactive oxygen species in chloroplasts. MV treatment decreased the maximal photosynthetic O$_2$ evolution, resulting in the photoinhibition of photosynthesis. The photoinhibition of photosynthesis was attributable to the decline in PSI functionality determined in vivo by monitoring absorption changes around 820 nm. In addition, MV treatment inactivated both antioxidant enzymes Cu-Zn-superoxide dismutase and ascorbate peroxidase known sensitive to reactive oxygen species. From these results, we suggest that chloroplast antioxidant enzymes are the primary targets of photooxidative stress, followed by subsequent inactivation of PSI.
