  • Nanostructured spinel NiZn ferrites were prepared by the sol-gel method from metal nitrate raw materials. Analyses by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy showed the average particle size of NiZn ferrite was under 50 nm. The single phase of NiZn ferrites was obtained by firing at 250${\circ}C$, resulting in nanoparticles exhibiting normal ferrimagnetic behavior. The nanostructured $Ni_{1-X}Zn_XFe_2O_4$ (x=0.0∼1.0) were found to have the cubic spinel structure of which the lattice constants ${\alpha}_2$ increases linearly from 8.339 to 8.427 ${\AA}$ with increasing Zn content x, following Vegard's law, approximately. The saturation magnetization $M_s$ was 48 emu/g for x=0.4 and decreased to 8.0 emu/g for higher Zn contents suggesting the typical ferrimagnetism in mixed spinel ferrites. Pure NiZn ferrite phase substituted by Cu was observed before using the additive but hematite phase was partially appeared at $Ni_{0.2}Zn_{0.2}Cu_{0.6}Fe_2O_4$. On the other hand, the hematite phase in this NiZn Cu ferrite was disappeared after using the additive of acethyl aceton with small amount. The saturation magnetization Ms of $Ni_{0.2}Zn_{0.8-y}Cu_yFe_2O_4$(y=0.2∼0.6) as measured was about 51 emu/g at 77K and 19 emu/g at room temperature, respectively.

  • In this paper, nuclear data for cross sections of the $^{64}Zn(n,2n)^{63}Zn$, $^{64}Zn(n,3n)^{62}Zn$, $^{64}Zn(n,p)^{64}Cu$, $^{66}Zn(n,2n)^{65}Zn$, $^{66}Zn(n,p)^{66}Cu$, $^{67}Zn(n,p)^{67}Cu$, $^{68}Zn(n,p)^{68}Cu$, and $^{68}Zn(n,{\alpha})^{65}Ni$ reactions were studied for neutron energies up to 40 MeV. In the nuclear model calculations, TALYS 1.6, ALICE/ASH, and EMPIRE 3.2 codes were used. Furthermore, the nuclear data for the (n,2n) and (n,p) reaction channels were also calculated using various cross-section systematics at energies around 14-15 MeV. The code calculations were analyzed and obtained using the different level densities in the exciton model and the geometry-dependent hybrid model. The results obtained from the excitation function calculations are discussed and compared with literature experimental data, ENDF/B-VII.1, and the TENDL-2015 evaluated data.

  • ZnO/Cu/ZnO (ZCZ) thin film deposited on the glass substrate with DC and RF magnetron sputtering was rapid thermal annealed (RTA) and then effect of thermal temperature on the opto-electical and transparent heater properties of the films were considered. The visible transmittance and electrical resistivity are depends on the annealing temperature. The electrical resistivity decreased from 1.68 × 10-3 Ωcm to 1.18 × 10-3 Ωcm and the films annealed at 400℃ show a higher transmittance of 78.5%. In a heat radiation test, when a bias voltage of 20 V is applied to the ZCZ film annealed at 400℃, its steady state temperature is about 70.7℃. In a repetition test, the steady state temperature is reached within 15s for all of the bias voltages.

  • This study investigated the effects of copper and zinc sources on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, carcass traits and meat characteristics in finishing pigs. Dietary treatments included 1) inorganic copper ($CuSO_4{\cdot}5H_2O$ 30ppm), 2) organic copper (Cu-methionine, 30 ppm), 3) inorganic zinc (ZnO, 80 ppm) and 4) organic zinc (Zn-methionine, 80 ppm). ZnO treatment improved the ADFI (average daily feed intake) compared to Cu-met and Zn-met treatments (p<0.05) during 5 weeks of treatment. However, during the entire experimental period, the ADG (average daily gain), ADFI and F:G ratio (feed conversion ratio) were not significantly different among the treatments (p>0.05). DM and N digestibility were not significantly different among the treatments after 5 weeks (p>0.05). At the end of the experiment, DM and N digestibility were decreased with Zn-met treatment relative to the other three treatments. The pH value of meat from $CuSO_4$ treated pigs was greater than Zn-met and ZnO treated pigs (p<0.05). Sensory evaluation was carried out for randomly selected (n = 16) paired loin samples. Meat color levels were increased (p<0.05) with Cu treatments compared to Zn treatments. $CuSO_4$ decreased the marbling of meat relative to the other treatments (p<0.05). The firmness was greater with ZnO treatment compared to Cu-met and ZnO treatments (p<0.05). These results indicate that inorganic Zn can improve growth performance, however, inorganic Cu and Zn are as effective as organic Cu and Zn at improving nutrient digestibility, carcass traits and meat quality. This form of organic additive can be friendlier to the environment than inorganic supplements.

  • Extracting efficiencies of seven extracting solutions currently employed in extracting heavy metals from soils were compared and the functional relationships among them were calculated by regression analysis for Cd, Zn, Cu, and Pb. Extracting solutions employed were 0.1M HCl, 0.1M $HNO_3$, 0.05M EDTA, 0.001M DTPA(pH 7.3), 1M $NH_4OAc$ (pH 7.0), 0.1M $NH_4Ox$, and 4M $HNO_3$ respectively. Soil samples were collected from rice paddy fields near old zinc mining sites and from rice paddy fields near agro-industry complexes. Soils sampled from old zinc mining sites were also extracted using a sequential extraction method. Extraction by 4M $HNO_3$ and sequential extraction were performed on the samples collected both in 1979 and in 1991 to investigate the change in content and in chemical form of heavy metals. Functional relationships among the extracting solutions were highly correlated for Cd and Zn, whereas those for Cu and Pb were not. The predominant chemical form of Cd. Zn, Cu, and Pb in soils from old zinc mining sites was found to be of sulfide/residue form. The exchangeable form of Cd, the organically bound form of Cu, and the carbonate form of Pb were relatively high, while the sulfide/residue form of Zn was very high(> 79%). Although transformation among the extracted forms was not clear during those 12 years, a decrease in total content of Cd, Zn, Cu, and Pb was clearly observed.

  • Complexation experiment between humic acid and heavy metal cations was conducted to clear information on heavy metal adsorption by soil organic constituent. The absorbance of UV-visible light of humic acid-metal complexes increased with increasing wavelength, and the order of their absorbance was in the order of Zn->Cd->Cu- saturated humic acid. Carboxyl and phenolic OH groups participated in the complex formation between heavy metal cations and functional groups of humic acid, and the amounts complex was in the order of $Cu^{+{+}}$ > $Zn^{+{+}}$ $\geq$ $Cd^{+{+}}$. The stability constants of humic acid-metal complexes increased with increasing pH, and the order of first stability constants was $Zn^{+{+}}$ > $Cd^{+{+}}$ > $Cu^{+{+}}$, and those of second and overall stability constants were $Cu^{+{+}}$ > $Zn^{+{+}}$ > $Cd^{+{+}}$. With increasing pH, the average binding numbers betwen heavy metal cations and functional groups of humic acid increased the order of $Cu^{+{+}}$ > $Zn^{+{+}}$ > $Cd^{+{+}}$. It was postulated that two types of complexations between heavy metal cations and functional groups of humic acid. One was the reactions in which only carboxyl groups participated to form complexes, and the other was those in which both carboxyl and phenolic OH groups simultaneously participated.

  • Exogenous $Cu^{2+}$ or $Zn^{2+}$ at micromolar concentration had a strong inhibitory effect on detergent-solubilized cytochrome c oxidase. A similar effect was observed when $Cu^{2+}$ was added to vesicular cytochrome c oxidase, although the extent of inhibition was significantly larger for the uncoupled state than for the coupled state. Interestingly, the inhibition by $Zn^{2+}$ was almost negligible for both the coupled and uncoupled states. These results suggest that the binding sites for $Cu^{2+}$ ions are exposed to the extravesicular side. whereas those for $Zn^{2+}$ are exposed to the matrix side. The EPR spectra of bound $Cu^{2+}$ ions at 77 K indicate that each of the first two $Cu^{2+}$ ions is ligated by three or four histidine residues, as evidenced by distinct $^{14}N$ superhyperfine splitting. These $Cu^{2+}$ ions can not be removed readily by EDTA and inhibit the enzyme activity by as much as 80%.

  • In order to investigate the contamination levels and dispersion patterns of heavy metals such as Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn by urbanization, soils beneath roadside-trees and leaves of Ginkgo biloba were collected from Seoul area during October to November in 2001. All tree leaves were grouped into washed and unwashed ones. The pH of most soil ranges from 6 to 9 indicating a weak acidic and alkaline. The element couples of Cd-Co, Cr-Ni and Zn-Cu-Pb have good correlation in soils, and contamination sources of Cd-Co, Cr-Ni and Zn-Cu-Pb could be similar. High correlation coefficients among Pb, Cu and Zn in G. biloba indicates that these elements show the similar behavior during the metabolism processes. From the results of pollution index calculation for soils, industrialized and heavy traffic area were severly polluted by heavy metals such as Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn. By the discriminant analysis, industrialized and heavy traffic areas are enriched in the order of Ni> Cr> Pb. Cadmium is useful to discriminate between industrialized and heavy traffic areas, Co and Pb are highly enhanced in heavy traffic area.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the heavy metal content (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn) of forest soil and of Lonicera japonica and to understand the correlation in contents of heavy metal between forest soil and L. japonica near the Onsan industrial region. The content of As, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn was higher in the industrial region than in forest regions, but re, Mn and Ni content was higher in forest regions than in the industrial region. Among heavy metals, the content of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in leaf, stem and root of L. japonica growing near industrial regions was significantly higher (p<0.05) than in forest regions. The content of As, Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in L. japonica tissues showed a positive or negative correlation with those in forest soils. Correlation coefficients of Cu content between forest soil and organs of L. japonica ranged from 0.93 to 0.99 (p<0.01). It was concluded that L. japanica could be used in heavy metal (Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn) decontamination of forest soils of industrial regions.
