Hydrogen gas and carbon nanotubes along with nanocarbon were produced from commercial natural gas using fixed bed catalyst reactor system. The maximum amount of carbon (491 g/g of catalyst) formation was achieved on 25% Ni, 3% Cu supported catalyst without formation of CO/CO2. Pure carbon nanotubes with length of 308 nm having balloon and horn type shapes were also formed at 673 K. Three sets of catalysts were prepared by varying the concentration of Ni in the first set, Cu concentration in the second set and doping with K in the third set to investigate the effect on stabilization of the catalyst and production of carbon nanotubes and hydrogen by copper and potassium doping. Particle size analysis revealed that most of the catalyst particles are in the range of 20-35 nm. All the catalysts were characterized using powder XRD, SEM/EDX, TPR, CHN, BET and CO-chemisorption. These studies indicate that surface geometry is modified electronically with the formation of different Ni, Cu and K phases, consequently, increasing the surface reactivity of the catalyst and in turn the Carbon nanotubes/H2 production. The addition of Cu and K enhances the catalyst dispersion with the increase in Ni loadings and maximum dispersion is achieved on 25% Ni: 3% Cu/Al catalyst. Clearly, the effect of particle size coupled with specific surface geometry on the production of hydrogen gas and carbon nanotubes prevails. Addition of K increases the catalyst stability with decrease in carbon formation, due to its interaction with Cu and Ni, masking Ni and Ni:Cu active sites.

In this study, electrochemical characterizations of PdCu/C catalysts that are synthesized by modified polyol method are investigated. Most of all, amount of ethylene glycol (EG) that is used as main component for catalyst synthesis is mainly modulated to optimize synthetic condition of the PdCu/C catalyst, For evaluations about catalytic activity and performance of direct formic acid fuel cell (DFAFC), half cell and full cell tests are implemented. As a result, when amount of EG is 4M, catalytic activities of the PdCu/C catalyst such as peak current of formic acid oxidation and active surface area are best, while maximum power density of DFAFC using the optimized PdCu/C catalyst is better than that using commercial Pd/C (30 wt%) by 6%. Based on that, PdCu/C catalyst synthesized by modified polyol method plays a critical role in improving (i) catalytic activity for formic acid oxidation and (ii) DFAFC performance by employing as anodic catalyst.
$TiO_2-catalyst$ suspensions work efficiently in Photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) for wastewater treatment. Nevertheless, once photocatalysis is completed, separation of the catalyst from solution becomes the main problem. The PCO of Cu(II)-EDTA was studied to determine the reusability of the titanium dioxide catalyst. Aqueous solutions of $10^{-4}M$ Cu(II)-EDTA were treated using illuminated $TiO_2$ particles at pH 6 in a circulating reactor. $TiO_2$ was reused in PCO system for treatment of Cu(II)-EDTA comparing two procedures: reuse of water and $TiO_2$ and reuse of the entire suspension after PCO of Cu(II)-EDTA. The results are as follows; (i) Photocatalytic efficiency worsens with successive runs when catalyst and water are reused without separation and filtration, whereas, when $TiO_2$ is separated from water, the reused $TiO_2$ is not deactivated. (ii) The $TiO_2$ mean recovery (%) with reused $TiO_2$ was 86.4%(1.73g/L). Although the mean initial degradation rate of Cu(II)-EDTA and Cu(II) was lower than that using fresh $TiO_2$, there was no significant change in the rate during the course of the three-trial experiment. It is suggested that Cu(II)-EDTA could be effectively treated using an recycling procedure of PCO and catalyst recovery. (iii) However, without $TiO_2$ separation, the loss of efficiency of the PCO in the use of water and $TiO_2$ due to Cu(II), DOC remained from previous degradation and Cu(II)-EDTA added to the same suspension was observed after 2 trials, and resulted in the inhibition of the Cu(II)-EDTA, Cu(II) and DOC destruction.

In this study, the Cu catalyst decorated with activated carbon fibers were prepared for improving $SO_2$ adsorption properties. Flame retardant and heat treatments of Lyocell fibers were carried out to obtain carbon fibers with high yield. The prepared carbon fibers were activated by KOH solution for the high specific surface area and controlled pore size to improve $SO_2$ adsorption properties. Copper nitrate was also used to introduce the Cu catalyst on the activated carbon fibers (ACFs), which can induce various reactions in the process; i) copper nitrate promotes the decomposition reaction of oxygen group on the carbon fiber and ii) oxygen radical is generated by the decomposition of copper oxide and nitrates to promote the activation reaction of carbon fibers. As a result, the micro and meso pores were formed and Cu catalysts evenly distributed on ACFs. By Cu-impregnation process, both the specific surface area and micropore volume of carbon fibers increased over 10% compared to those of ACFs only. Also, this resulted in an increase in $SO_2$ adsorption capacity over 149% than that of using the raw ACF. The improvement in $SO_2$ adsorption properties may be originated from the synergy effect of two properties; (i) the physical adsorption from micro, meso and specific surface area due to the transition metal catalyst effect appeared during Cu-impregnation process and ii) the chemical adsorption of $SO_2$ gas promoted by the Cu catalyst on ACFs.
A simple one-pot synthesis of two derivatives of 1,4-dihydropyridines has been described under reflux conditions using copper iodide nanoparticles (CuI NPs) as a catalyst in high yields. This method demonstrated four-component coupling reactions of aldehydes and ammonium acetate via two pathways. In one route, the reaction was performed using 2 eq ethyl acetoacetate while in the other one 1 eq ethyl acetoacetate and 1 eq malononitrile were used. The CuI NPs was reused and recycled without any loss of activity and product yield. It is noteworthy to state that wide range of the 1,4-dihydropyridines have attracted large interest due to pharmacological and biological activities.
Recently, there has been a growing interest in clean hydrogen energy that does not emit carbon dioxide during combustion due to the increasing focus on carbon neutral. Research related to hydrogen production continues, and in this study, we applied waste-derived synthesis gas to the water-gas shift reaction to simultaneously treat waste and produce high-purity hydrogen. To enhance catalytic activity in the high-temperature water-gas shift (HT-WGS) reaction, magnesium was used as a support material alongside cerium. Cu-CeO2-MgO catalysts were synthesized, with copper acting as the active component for the HT-WGS reaction. A study on the catalytic activity based on the preparation method was conducted, and the Cu-CeO2-MgO catalyst prepared by impregnation method exhibited the highest activity in the HT-WGS reaction. The observed superior performance of the Cu-CeO2-MgO catalyst prepared through the impregnation method can be attributed to its significantly higher oxygen storage capacity and amount of active Cu species.
In this study, investigated the synthesis method of p-Phenylenediamine (PPD) by amination of p-Diiodobenzene (PDIB) under supercritical ammonia and CuI catalyst conditions. We examined the effects of various process variables (e.g., reaction temperature, pressure, amount of ammonia inserted, amount of catalyst inserted, and reaction time) on the production yield of PPD by analyzing the Gas Chromatography (GC). The experimental results demonstrated that PPD was not produced under non-catalyst conditions, and PPD production yield increased with increasing temperature, pressure, amount of catalyst inserted, and reaction time. However, for the reaction temperature case, it was found that $200^{\circ}C$ was the optimal temperature, because thermal degradation of PPD occurred above $250^{\circ}C$. In addition, we confirmed the structure of PPD and the bonding characteristics of the amine group via FT-IR and H-NMR analysis.
Poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene ether) (PPE) was synthesized using $Cu(NO_2)_2{\cdot}3H_2O$ or CuCl catalyst with various amounts of ligand and base in several different solvent systems. CuCl/1-methylimidazole/ammonium hydroxide was found to be an effective catalyst system which showed the highest polymer yield and molecular weight. The effects of catalyst/monomer ratio, different amine ligands, and the content of mono-functional reagent 2,4,6-trimethylphenol (TMP) additive on the polymer yield and molecular weight were investigated. Among the co-solvent systems used in this polymerization, chloroform/methanol 9/1(v/v) gave the highest polymer yield and molecular weight ($\overline{M_n}$ 55 K, $\overline{M_w}$ 92 K, PDI 1.7). The catalytic activity between CuCl and CuI was compared by oxygen-uptake experiments and the formation of sideproduct, 5,5'-tetramethyl-4,4'-diphenoquinone (DPQ), was analyzed by ultraviolet spectroscopy.

p-Phenylenediamine (PPD) was synthesized by aromatic amination of p-diiodobenzene (PDIB) using liquid ammonia and Cu-catalysts. The effects of the catalyst, reductant, ammonia quantity and reaction temperature on PPD production were investigated. Cu(I) compounds and Cu powder were selected as catalyst due to a higher selectivity than Cu(II) compounds. As the catalyst quantity increased, rate of PPD production as well as side reaction of aniline decreased with increasing the quantity of ammonia. Reductants such as ascorbic acid, hydrazine and dihydroxyfumaric acid were tested to lower the catalyst loading. The use of reductants resulted in increasing the reaction rate but also increased the amount of aniline The rate of reaction using ascorbic acid or dihydroxyfumaric acid was faster than that using hydrazine. The lowest side reaction of aniline was found in dihydroxyfumaric acid of reductants investigated.
The synthesis of methanol from carbon dioxide and hydrogen was studied for various compositions of Cu/ZnO catalyst system. Effect of the composition ratio of CuO and ZnO on the catalytic activity in the above reaction and the relationship between the activity and the characteristics of the catalysts were explained from the result of surface area measurements, SEM, XRD, and XPS. The major products of the reaction were methanol and carbon monoxide. The selectivity to methanol increased with increase of the copper oxide content in the catalyst up to CuO: ZnO = 30:70 weight ratio, and decreased rapidly when the content is above 70%. SEM and BET measurements, indicate that this point corresponds to the increasing point of the catalyst crystallite size and the decreasing point of the surface area. As to the Cu/Cu + Zn atomic ratio, the surface concentration of copper measured by XPS decreased remarkably when the copper oxide content in catalyst was higher than 50%. All the unreduced catalysts had almost same binding energy of Cu(2P3) level, but the binding energy for $Cu(2P^3)$ level of reduced catalysts was lowered than that of calcined catalysts. The surface copper species which was in the maximum amount when the CuO:ZnO composition in the catalyst was 30:70, existed as zero valent copper. This result agreed with the experimental result that the highest rate of methanol formation was observed when the CuO content in the catalyst was 30%. It was postulated that these reduced catalysts performed with a relatively strong basicity because the formation rate of acetone was higher than that of propylene in isopropanol decomposition as measured in a pulse type reactor.
