  • Ultrasonic melt treatment (UST) was applied to an A390 hypereutectic Al-Si alloy in a temperature range of $750-800^{\circ}C$ and its influence on the solidification structure and the consequent increase in strength was investigated. UST at such a high temperature, which is about $100^{\circ}C$ above the liquidus temperature, had little effect on the grain refinement but enhanced the homogeneity of the microstructure with the uniform distribution of constituent phases (e.g. primary Si, ${\alpha}-Al$ and intermetallics) significantly refined. With the microstructural homogeneity, quantitative analysis confirmed that UST was found to suppress the formation of Cu-bearing phases, i.e., $Q-Al_5Cu_2Mg_8Si_6$, $Al_2Cu$ phases that form in the final stage of solidification while notably increasing the average Cu contents in the matrix from 1.29 to 2.06 wt%. A tensile test exhibits an increase in the yield strength of the as-cast alloy from 185 to 208 MPa, which is mainly associated with the solute increment within the matrix. The important role of UST in the microstructure evolution during solidification is discussed and the mechanism covering the microstructure-strengthening interrelationship of the ultrasonically treated A390 alloy is proposed.

  • Ag-Au vein ores from the Weolyu mine, Youngdong district, contain significant germanium (up to 145g/t, average 34.9g/t), in the form of argyrodite ($Ag_8GeS_6$). Mineral chemistries of argyrodite and its associated minerals were determined by electron probe microanalysis. Twenty eight elements in thirteen ore samples were analyzed using an ICP mass spectrometer. Argyrodite occurs in the paragenetically later mineral assemblage consisting of carbonates+quartz+native silver+argentite+Ag-sulfosalts, indicating that the germanium mineralization represents the culmination of a complex mineral sequence which includes early gold and late silver deposition. The mean formula of the argyrodite is $Ag_{7.90}\;(Ge_{0.76}Sn_{0.04})S_6$, with minor amounts of Cu, Fe, Sb, As, Sn, and Zn. The Weolyu argyrodite shows systematic substitutions of Ag by Cu, and of Ge by Sb. Chemical analyses of vein ores indicate that metals were precipitated in the order of $Fe{\rightarrow}Pb$, $Zn{\rightarrow}Cu{\rightarrow}Ag$, Sb, As, Ge. Germanium has a strong geochemical affmity with As and Sb, and Cu, Pb, Zn, Mo, and Sr show weak positive correlations with Ge. Germanium deposition at Weolyu was mainly a result of cooling of hydrothermal fluids (down to $175^{\circ}C{\sim}210^{\circ}C$, due to increasing involvement of cooler meteoric waters in the epithermal system.

  • Laboratory model test with soft silty ground (ML) and polluted silty ground with wastewater and factory waste oil ($ML_p$) was conducted and the applicability of changes of bearing capacity from the increase of pollutants was compared and analyzed with existing findings. As silty ground polluted with wastewater and factory waste oil had increased contents of pollutants, plasticization of ground was fostered compared to soft silt ground due to the influence of pollutants, and characteristics of ground strength decreased. Critical surcharge value of soft silty ground $q_{cr}=4.14c_u$, ultimate bearing capacity value $q_{ult}=9.53c_u$, critical surcharge value of silty ground polluted with wastewater and factory waste oil $q_{cr}=1.78c_u$ and ultimate bearing capacity value $q_{ult}=4.39c_u$. Critical surcharge and ultimate bearing capacity of silty ground polluted with wastewater and factory waste oil were less than those of soft silty ground. It meant that shearing resistance due to the increase of pollutants decreased and rather a smaller value was obtained.

  • The performance of refrigerant oil at the thrust bearing and at the journal bearing of a scroll compressor is a significant factor. This paper presents the friction and anti-wear characteristics of nano-fluid with a mixture of a refrigerant oil and nano powders. The particle size distribution and oxidation stability of nano powders prepared by the electrical explosion method were analyzed by TEM and BET. It was found that the nanoparticles showed a spherical morphology with sizes ranging of 40-60 nm and were covered with graphite layers of 2-4 nm. The thermal conductivity of POE oil was 0.1-0.5W/mk higher than that of POE oil. The coefficient of friction of Cu-POE was found to be 0.1 higher than that of Al2O3. The cooling capacity of the heat pump with nanofluid increased to 3.67%, and the performance was improved by 5.83%.

  • Experiments were conducted to determine the structural static and dynamic characteristics of air foil bearings. The housing of the bearing on the journal was driven by an impact hammer which was used to simulate dynamic forces acting on the bump loll with various leading condition. Two different bump foils (Cu-coated bump and viscoelastic bump) were tested and the static and dynamic coefficients of two bump foils compared, based on the experimental measurements for a wide range of operating conditions. The static and dynamic characteristics of air foil bearings were extracted 0rpm the frequency response function by least square method and IV(Instrumental Variable) method. The experiment was tested at 0rpm and $10,000\~16,000rpm$, and loaded on $50\~150N$. From the test results, the possibility of the application of high load and high speed condition is suggested.

  • Three different floras(M. sinsinsis, A. vulgaris, Robinia pseudo-acacia) were collected from the granite(GR) and coal bearing shale area(CB) and analysed for their heavy metal elements with the representative soils. Regardless of the flora species, the CB were high in average contents. Among the correlation relationships, the CB were more distinctive than the GR, and the A. vulgaris showed higher correlations than the M. sinsinsis. In the same soils, the A. vutgaris showed high contents than the M. sinsinsis and Robinia pseudo-acacia, and the M. sinsinsis were high relative to the Robinia pseudo-acacia. In the comparisons of the flora, root parts were high in most of the elements except for Zn. In the soils, the CB were high in most of elements while As and Mo showed different contents between the GR and CB. In the comparison between soil and flora, soils of the GR were high in the V and Sc contents and low in Zn and Cu, while those of the CR were high in the Cr, V and Sc contents, and low in the Zn contents, Comparing with the soil contents, the M, sinsinsis in the GR were similar to Co and V contents while, in the CB, the M. sinsinsis were similar to the Ni, Cr, Co, Zn, Mo contents, and the Robinia pseudo-acacia were similar to the Ni, Zn, Cu contents. Overall results suggested that the M. sinsinsis and A. vulgaris should be eligible for the bioremediation of the soils polluted by heavy metal such as the CB.

  • The Boguk cobalt mine is located within the Cretaceous Gyeongsang Sedimentary Basin. Major ore minerals including cobalt-bearing minerals (loellingite, cobaltite, and glaucodot) and Co-bearing arsenopyrite occur together with base-metal sulfides (pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, pyrite, sphalerite, etc.) and minor amounts of oxides (magnetite and hematite) within fracture-filling $quartz{\pm}actinolite{\pm}carbonate$ veins. These veins are developed within an epicrustal micrographic granite stock which intrudes the Konchonri Formation (mainly of shale). Radiometric date of the granite (85.98 Ma) indicates a Late Cretaceous age for granite emplacement and associated cobalt mineralization. The vein mineralogy is relatively complex and changes with time: cobalt-bearing minerals with actinolite, carbonates, and quartz gangues (stages I and II) ${\rightarrow}$ base-metal sulfides, gold, and Fe oxides with quartz gangues (stage III) ${\rightarrow}$ barren carbonates (stages IV and V). The common occurrence of high-temperature minerals (cobalt-bearing minerals, molybdenite and actinolite) with low-temperature minerals (base-metal sulfides, gold and carbonates) in veins indicates a xenothermal condition of the hydrothermal mineralization. High enrichment of Co in the granite (avg. 50.90 ppm) indicates the magmatic hydrothermal derivation of cobalt from this cooling granite stock, whereas higher amounts of Cu and Zn in the Konchonri Formation shale suggest their derivations largely from shale. The decrease in temperature of hydrothermal fluids with a concomitant increase in fugacity of oxygen with time (for cobalt deposition in stages I and II, $T=560^{\circ}C-390^{\circ}C$ and log $fO_2=$ >-32.7 to -30.7 atm at $350^{\circ}C$; for base-metal sulfide deposition in stage III, $T=380^{\circ}-345^{\circ}C$ and log $fO_2={\geq}-30.7$ atm at $350^{\circ}C$) indicates a transition of the hydrothermal system from a magmatic-water domination toward a less-evolved meteoric-water domination. Sulfur isotope data of stage II sulfide minerals evidence that early, Co-bearing hydrothermal fluids derived originally from an igneous source with a ${\delta}^{34}S_{{\Sigma}S}$ value near 3 to 5‰. The remarkable increase in ${\delta}^{34}S_{H2S}$ values of hydrothermal fluids with time from cobalt deposition in stage II (3-5‰) to base-metal sulfide deposition in stage III (up to about 20‰) also indicates the change of the hydrothermal system toward the meteoric water domination, which resulted in the leaching-out and concentration of isotopically heavier sulfur (sedimentary sulfates), base metals (Cu, Zn, etc.) and gold from surrounding sedimentary rocks during the huge, meteoric water circulation. We suggest that without the formation of the later, meteoric water circulation extensively through surrounding sedimentary rocks the Boguk cobalt deposits would be simple veins only with actinolite + quartz + cobalt-bearing minerals. Furthermore, the formation of the meteoric water circulation after the culmination of a magmatic hydrothermal system resulted in the common occurrence of high-temperature minerals with later, lower-temperature minerals, resulting in a xenothermal feature of the mineralization.

  • Mining activity in the Gubong gold mine started in 1908 and lasted up to recent days. Heavy metals derived from the activity may be porentially toxic to human life and envirinment of this area. Because metal toxicity depends on chemical associations into five operationally defined groups: exchangeable, carbonate, reducible, oxidizable, and residual fractions, and the Most of heavy metals have significant little significance (alomost<1%). And Cu is mainly associated with the oxidizable from. Total concentration of heavy metals, pH, and mineralogy affect the chemical forms of the metals. Heavy metal concentrations. Significant amounts of metal elements (5∼65.1% in Pb, 6.2∼39.7% in Zn, 8.7∼54.7% in Cd, and 3.6∼24.7% in Cu) were present in carbonate form from mine wastes, contaminated soils and sediments. High pH value and cerussite (Pb bearing carbonate mineral) in mine wastes, contaminated soils and sediments. High pH value and cerussite (Pb beraring varbonate mineral) in mine waste support this result. Areas with high corbonate bound from would have higher potentoal conamination, however, because elements of carbonate bound forms are easily mobilized under lower pH conditions in the surface envionments due to acid to rain soil acidification.

  • Magnetic beads (Dynabeads$^{(R)}$) embedded in ~1 micron size polystyrene beads bearing surface carboxylic acid groups were modified with aminobenzyl ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (ABEDTA) to concentrate or separate metal ions using pH gradients on micro and nano scales. The immobilization of ABEDTA was achieved by amide formation. The presence of the metal chelating functional group in the fully deprotonated form was confirmed by FT-IR. The chelation efficiency of beads was tested by determining metal ions in supernatant using GFAAS when pH gradients from 3 to 7. Mixtures of Cu and Mg and of Cd and Mn (at 10 ng/mL of metal) were separated as the difference in formation constant with the functional group of ABEDTA. The separation was repeated twice with relative standard deviation of <18%. A polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microchip column packed with EDTA-coated magnetic beads was optimized to concentrate metal ion for practical applications by eluting a Cu solution of micro scale at pH 3.

  • Lead-tin-copper ternary alloy electrodeposition is conducted onto the inner bore surface of plain bearings as an overlay in order to investigate the effect of slot width, current density and fluoboric acid concentration on the uniformity of overlay. The thickness of overlay is analyzed by means of current distribution resulting from the overvoltage of plating bath and the apparent distance between cathode and anode. The result demonstrate that the uniformity of overlay is remarkably dependent of the slot size and current density, but has little bearing on the fluoboric acid concentration over 100g/L. This present study indicates that uniform overlay is obtainable within the tolerable thickness of ${\pm}2{\mu}m$ by using the slot width of 22mm. The surface morphology examination also shows the important role of concentration polarization of the micro-uniformity of overlay. The micro-uniformity has improved at the low concentration polarization which resulted from operating at the low current density and high fluoboric acid concentration. The surface morphology of deposits exhibits the vivid pyramid crystalline in the plating condition of low concentration polarizatio and all deposits have columnar structure parallel to the applied electric field regardless of the electroplating condition used.
