The Availability of Automobile Catalytic Convert of Copper Based on the DFT Calculations of Cu-NO Complexes (Cu-NO 복합체에 대한 DFT 계산에 따른 Cu의 자동차 촉매변환기 적합성)

  • The purpose of this study is to show the possibility of using Cu catalyst in removal of $NO_x$ from automobile exhaust which is regarded as the primary source of fine dust PM2.5. The energy and the bond lengths of the three possible structures of Cu-NO complex, which is formed by binding NO molecule to Cu, and the changes in IR and Raman spectra are calculated using MPW1PW91 method on the level of 6-311(+)G(d,p) of basis sets with Gaussian 09 program. As a result, the enthalpy of formation of the Cu-NO complexes are obtained as ${\Delta}H=104.89$, 91.98, -127.48 kJ/mol for the linear, bent, and bridging forms of them, respectively. And the bond lengths between N and O in NO complexes, which becomes longer than NO molecule, indicates that O is easily reduced from Cu-NO. In addition, the Cu-NO complexes using Cu catalyst can be easily measured by infrared or Raman spectroscopy because in the IR and Raman spectra of the NO and Cu-NO complexes the positon and the intensity of bands are definitely different in each vibration mode.

  • The Cu-based bulk metallic glass (BMG) composite was fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) using of gas-atomized metallic glass powders and ductile brass powders. No defect such as pores and cavities was observed at the interface between the brass powder and the metallic glass matrix, suggesting that the SPS process caused a severe viscous flow of the metallic glass and brass phases in the supercooled liquid region, resulting in a full densification. The BMG composites shows some macroscopic plasticity after yielding, although the levels of strength decreased.

A Study of Strength, Fracture Toughness and Superconducting Properties of YBCO-Ag Composite Superconductors (YBCO-Ag 복합초전도체의 강도, 파괴인성 및 초전도성질에 관한 연구)

  • We have studied the effect of Ag additions on the microstructure and the related mechanical and supercon¬ducting properties of $ YBa_{2}$$Cu_{3}$$O_{7-\delta}$ (YBCO) superconductors. A 5-15 vol.% of Ag was added to YBCO in the forms of Ag and $AgNO_{3}$, powder and the resultant microstructural evolution was evaluated. It was observed that the strength and fracture toughness of YBCO increased with increasing Ag content. These improvements in strength and fracture toughness are believed to be due to the strengthening mechanisms caused by the presence of Ag. In addition, YBCO-Ag composite superconductors showed higher values of strength and fracture toughness when Ag was added in the form of AgNO, than those of which was added Ag. The higher mechanical properties of YBCO- Ag resulting from $AgNO_{3}$, addition are probably due to the microstructure of more finely and uniformly distributed Ag particles. The addition of Ag also showed slightly improved critical current density of YBCO superconductors.

The Effects of Onion and Garlic on Copper-Phenanthroline Complex Induced DNA Degradation (Copper-Phenanthroline 복합체에 의해 유도되는 DNA 손상에 대한 양파와 마늘의 억제효과)

  • In the present study, the effects of onion and garlic on copper and 1, 10-phenanthroline com plex induced DNA degradation were investigated by the decreased level of thiobarbiturin acid (TBA) reactive materials. Phenanthroline is specific for copper and the reaction releases TBA reactive material from DNA which can be measured by absorbance at 535nm. The levels of TBA reactive materials were decreased by adding onion or garlic ghomogenate into reaction mixture but the onion had more strong potency and the effect of onion was not changed by boiliing. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase have no inhibitory effects on copper induced DNa damage but reduced glutathone was more effective. The activities of antioxidant enzymes and the contents of sulfhydryl groups in onion and garlic were also investigated. The activity of SOD was more higher in garlic, but catalase and glutathione peroxidase activities were higher in onion. The contents of induced DNA damage were not by antioxidant enzymes such as SOD, catalase and glutathione peroxidase or sulfhydryl groups, but a substance which is more stable in high temperature.

The Copper Adsorption onto Hwangto Suspension from Pankok-ri, Kosung-gun (경남 고성군 판곡리 황토 현탁액의 구리 흡착 특성)

  • Adsorption behavior of Cu onto Hwangto, from Pankok-ri, Kosung-gun, suspension was studied using Cu batch adsorftion experiment and computer program MINTEQA2 and FITEQL 3.2. The sorption of copper was investigated as a function of pH, copper concentration and $NaNO_3$ background concentration (0.01 and 0.1 M). The concentration of copper was analyzed using ICP-AES. The sorption of copper onto Hwangto suspension increased with increasing pH and copper concentration. The adsorption percentage of copper drastically increased from pH 5.5 to 6.5, and reached nearly 100% at pH 7.5. Because the amount of copper solution and the ionic strength of background electrolyte may not affect the sorption of copper onto Hwangto, the copper ion may be combined at the surface of Hwangto as an inner-sphere complex. Using the MINTEQA2 program, the speciation of copper was calculated as a function of pH and copper concentration. The concentration of $Cu^{2+}$ decreased and that of $Cu(OH)_2$ increased with increasing pH. The uptake of copper in the Hwangto suspension was simulated by FITEQL3.2 program using two sites-three pKas model, which is composed of silicate reaction site and Fe oxide reaction site. The copper absorption reaction constants were calculated in the case of 2~6 mL of copper solution. The Fe oxide reaction site rapidly adsorbs copper ion between pH 4.5~6.5. Silicate reaction site adsorbs little copper ion at low copper concentration but much at high copper concentration. The removal amount of copper by precipitation was negligible in comparison with that of adsorption. The Fe oxide reaction site may has higher adsorption affinity of copper ion than silicate reaction site.

The effect of L-Ascorbic Acid on the Oxidative Reaction of Lysine in Collagen. (Collagen 분자 중의 lysine 산화반응에 미치는 비타민 C의 영향)

  • In a model reaction using lysyl oxidase purified partilally from bovine aorta, effect of L-ascorbic acid AsA on the oxidative reaction of lysine in collagen was investigated. Addition of Ash to the reaction mixture under aerobic conditions resulted in the decrease of enzymatic activity. In order to examine the specificity of AsA in the oxidative reaction of lysine, other reductants including A derivatives instead of AsA were added to the reaction mixture. Thiol such as glutathione had no effect on the activities of lysyl oxidase. on the other hand, it was observed that erythorbic acid, which was a stereoisomer of AsA, had the same inhibitory effect on this oxidative reaction as AsA. Moreover, by the addition of 3,4-dihydroxybenzoate, which was structural analog of AsA, the activities decreased in a similar manner to that of AsA. These results indicate that the regulatory effect of AsA on lysyl oxidase is attributed to characteristics of the structure. From the determination of Ash remained in the reaction mixture, it is shown that AsA concentration remarkably decreased by lysyl oxidase of the reaction mixture. It is hypothesized that endiol groups reduces the enzyme-bound $Cu^{+2}$ required for further progress of the reaction, and suggests that AsA regulates specifically the reduction of $Cu^{+2}$ required to oxidize lysyl oxidase. This findings support that AsA has an important regulatory role on the oxidative reaction of lysine and on changes of collagen cross-links with aging.

A Newer Short Synthesis of dl-Muscone(Ⅰ) (새로운 짧은 경로로의 dl-Muscone 합성(Ⅰ))

  • New routes have been developed for the practical syntheses of dl-Muscone(1) employing cyclopentadecanone(2) as the starting material. In this experiment, addition of bromine to cyclopentadecanone in dried E. Ether solution with a trace of $AlCl_3$ as the catalyst were produced 2-bromocyclopentadecanone(3). This process was enhanced formation of regioselective enolate anion at $C_2$ position. 2-Bromocyclopentadecanone was put into $Li_2CO_3$-LiBr-DMF solution at 140∼150$^{\circ}C$, were produced trans- and cis-2-cyclopentadecen-1-one(4) mixture. Other by-products were reduced by control of reaction temperature and time. Trans- and cis-2-cyclopentadecen-1-one(4) mixture was directly put into dried E. Ether solvent and induce to react dropwise with $CH_3MgBr-Cu_2Cl_2$ complex, all of them got into 1,4-addition, dl-Muscone (1) was formed as the result. Conculsion, through three steps procedure from cyclopentadecanone(2) to dl-Muscone(1), the pure dl-Muscone was obtained with the high proportion of 85%, and synthetic cost was able to be much lower than any other conventional methods as there were no chemical separating steps.
