Properties of experimental copper-aluminium-nickel alloys for dental post-and-core applications

  • PURPOSE. This study aimed to develop a copper-aluminium-nickel alloy which has properties comparable to that of dental alloys used for dental post and core applications with the reasonable cost. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Sixteen groups of experimental copper alloys with variants of 3, 6, 9, 12 wt% Al and 0, 2, 4, 6 wt% Ni were prepared and casted. Their properties were tested and evaluated. The data of thermal, physical, and mechanical properties were analyzed using the two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (${\alpha}$=0.05). The alloy toxicity was evaluated according to the ISO standard. RESULTS. The solidus and liquidus points of experimental alloys ranged from $1023^{\circ}C$ to $1113^{\circ}C$ and increased as the nickel content increased. The highest ultimate tensile strength ($595.9{\pm}14.2$ MPa) was shown in the Cu-12Al-4Ni alloy. The tensile strength was increased as the both elements increased. Alloys with 3-6 wt% Al exhibited a small amount of 0.2% proof strength. Accordingly, the Cu-9Al-2Ni and Cu-9Al-4Ni alloys not only demonstrated an appropriate modulus of elasticity ($113.9{\pm}8.0$ and $122.8{\pm}11.3$ GPa, respectively), but also had a value of 0.2% proof strength ($190.8{\pm}4.8$ and $198.2{\pm}3.4$ MPa, respectively), which complied with the ISO standard requirement (>180 MPa). Alloys with the highest contents of nickel (6 wt% Ni) revealed a widespread decolourisation zone (5.0-5.9 mm), which correspondingly produced the largest cell response, equating positive control. CONCLUSION. The copper alloys fused with 9 wt% Al and 2-4 wt% Ni can be considered for a potential use as dental post and core applications.

  • 폐전자스크랩에서 유가금속을 회수하기 위하여 곰팡이균으로 Aspergillus niger를 이용한 Cu, Zn, Al, Co, Ni, Fe, Sn, Pb의 침출 거동을 조사하였다. Aspergillus niger는 전자스크랩의 존재 하에 배양이 가능하였고 신진대사 작용에 의해 유기산(구연산 및 옥살산)을 생성함으로써 폐전자스크랩에서 각 금속들을 침출시키는 것을 알 수 있었다. 예비실험으로 먼저 구연산 및 옥살산을 이용한 화학침출 실험으로부터 Cu, Zn, Al, Co, Fe, Sn, Pb의 침출거동을 조사하였다. Aspergillus niger를 이용한 미생물 침출 실험의 결과 전자스크랩의 농도가 50g/L인 경우 Cu 및 Co의 침출율은 95%이상이었고, Al, Zn, Pb 및 Sn의 경우는 15-35%의 침출율을 나타냈으며 Ni 및 Fe의 경우는 10%이하의 침출율을 보였다.

  • 복기 추진제인 N-5 추진제에 4종의 금속선(Ag, Cu, Al, Ni-Cr선)을 삽입하여 연소 특성을 고찰하여 보았다. 금속선이 삽입된 복기 추진제의 연소속도 증가비($r_w$/$r_sb$)는 Ag선 > Cu선 > Al선 > Ni-Cr선의 순으로서 금속선의 열확산 계수의 크기 순과 일치하였다. 금속선을 삽입한 N-5추진제의 $r_w$/$r_sb$는 단열 불꽃 온도와 구조의 차이에 의하여 혼합형 추진제보다 작게 나타났다. 복기 추진제에 열확산 계수가 비교적 큰 Ag, Cu, Al선을 삽입한 경우, 금속선이 삽입되지 않은 추진제에서 나타난 plateau와 mesa 연소 특성이 사라진 반면 열확산 계수가 작은 Ni-Cr선을 삽입한 경우에서는 plateau와 mesa 연소 특성이 그대로 존재했다.

Production of Hydrogen and Carbon Nanotubes from Catalytic Decomposition of Methane over Ni:Cu/Alumina Modified Supported Catalysts

  • Hydrogen gas and carbon nanotubes along with nanocarbon were produced from commercial natural gas using fixed bed catalyst reactor system. The maximum amount of carbon (491 g/g of catalyst) formation was achieved on 25% Ni, 3% Cu supported catalyst without formation of CO/CO2. Pure carbon nanotubes with length of 308 nm having balloon and horn type shapes were also formed at 673 K. Three sets of catalysts were prepared by varying the concentration of Ni in the first set, Cu concentration in the second set and doping with K in the third set to investigate the effect on stabilization of the catalyst and production of carbon nanotubes and hydrogen by copper and potassium doping. Particle size analysis revealed that most of the catalyst particles are in the range of 20-35 nm. All the catalysts were characterized using powder XRD, SEM/EDX, TPR, CHN, BET and CO-chemisorption. These studies indicate that surface geometry is modified electronically with the formation of different Ni, Cu and K phases, consequently, increasing the surface reactivity of the catalyst and in turn the Carbon nanotubes/H2 production. The addition of Cu and K enhances the catalyst dispersion with the increase in Ni loadings and maximum dispersion is achieved on 25% Ni: 3% Cu/Al catalyst. Clearly, the effect of particle size coupled with specific surface geometry on the production of hydrogen gas and carbon nanotubes prevails. Addition of K increases the catalyst stability with decrease in carbon formation, due to its interaction with Cu and Ni, masking Ni and Ni:Cu active sites.

  • Electroless Ni-Cu-P alloy plating of Al base hard disk was performed to investigate some properties according to the change of composition. It was found that the composition of Ni and Cu in deposits changed linearly with increasing the mole ratio of NiSO4.6H2O/CuSO4.5H2O. The increase in hardness by heat - treatment was confirmed to be associated with small size grained crystallization of the amorphous deposits. Acid resistance of all deposits layer. which had been heated up to 30$0^{\circ}C$, was found to be exellent when immersed in 1N-H2SO4 solution, and it showed more superior acid resistance with decreasing Cu content and with increasing P. The resistivity of the deposits heat treated became smaller at temperature more than 50$0^{\circ}C$, and it became largerly with increasing P content. Cu 44.1wt% alloy(C bath) showed the most superior non-magnetically stable characteristics after heat treatment. It was superiorly with higher temperature and with decreasing P content.

  • Zr-based bulk metallic glasses have a significant mechanical properties such as high strength and elastic strain limit, and a good processing ability due to the deformation behavior such as superplasticity under supercooled liquid region. Recently, many researches on the determination of optimum working condition in various bulk metallic glasses have been carried out. In this study, the deformation behavior and forming conditions of $Zr_{55}Cu_{30}Al_{10}Ni_{5}$ bulk metallic glass were investigated under three different strain rates and at various temperatures between 627K and 727K. The glass transition temperature, crystallization temperature and supercooled liquid region of $Zr_{55}Cu_{30}Al_{10}Ni_{5}$ bulk metallic glass are 680K, 762K and 82K, respectively.

MAGNETORESISTANCE OF NiFeCo/Cu/NiFeCo/FeMn MULTILAYERED THIN FILMS WITH LOW SATURATION FIELD

  • Magnetoresistance of NiFeCo/Cu/NiFeCo/FeMn uncoupled exchange biased sandwiches has been studied. The magnetoresistance change ratio, ${\Delta}R/R_{s}$ showed 4.1 % at a saturation field as low as 11 Oe in $Si/Ti(50\;{\AA})/NiFeCo(70\;{\AA})/Cu(23\;{\AA})/NiFeCo(70\;{\AA})/FeMn(150\;{\AA})/Cu(50\;{\AA})$ spin valve structure. In this system, the magnetoresistance was affected by interlayer material and thickness. When Ti and Cu were used as the interlayer material in this structure, maximum magnetoresistance change ratio were 0.32 % and 4.1 %, respectively. 6.1 % MR ratio was obtained in $Si/Ti(50\;{\AA})/NiFeCo(70\;{\AA})/Cu(15\;{\AA})/NiFeCo(70\;{\AA})/FeMn(150\;{\AA})/Cu(50\;{\AA})$ spin valve structure. The magnetoresistance change ratio decreased monotonically as the interlayer thickness increased. It was found that the exchange bias field exerted by FeMn layer to the adjacent NiFeCo layer was ~25 Oe, far smaller than that reported in NiFe/Cu/NiFe/FeMn spin valve structure(Dieny et. al., ~400 Oe). The relationship between the film texture and exchange anisotropy ha been examined for spin valve structures with Ti, Cu, or non-buffer layer.

급냉응고된 Ribbon을 이용한 CuAINi 형상기억합금의 결정미세화 (Grain Size Refinement in CuAlNi Shape Memory Alloy using Melt-spun Ribbon)

  • The mechnial properties such as fracture strength, ductility and fatigue strength of Cu shape memory alloy are lower than those of Ti-Ni SMA, because of their high elastic anisotropy and large grain size. And in order to improve the mechanical property of Cu SMA, some techniques such as casting method by addition of refining element, powder metallurgy and rapid solidification process have been studied on the refinement of the grain size of Cu SMA. This study was carried out to refine the grain size of CuAlNi SMA by applying the melt spinning method. According to this study, the conclusions are as follows; - grain size of the melt-spun ribbon was about $1\mum$ - there was not change in grain size, although increasing of hot pressing temperature -grain size of the hot-extruded specimen was about $30-40\mum$, it is more refiner than that of castings

  • [ $MO/Al_2O_3-ZrO_2$ ](M=Ni and Cu) mixed metal oxides were prepared using sol-gel method in order to investigate the applicability to the 2-step thermo-chemical water splitting process and their redox behaviors were studied by temperature programmed reaction(TPR) from room temperature to 900$^{\circ}C$ under 5% $H_2$/Ar for the reduction and $H_2O$/Ar for the oxidation, respectively. From the results, peaks of the reduction and the oxidation on temperature were shifted with the change of crystalline phases due to the addition of $Al_2O_3$ and $ZrO_2$. The intensities of the peaks were also increased with the increase of contents of NiO or CuO that could be considered as active species. In addition, based on the observation of SEM images before and after the redox test, it seemed that $Al_2O_3-ZrO_2$ added prevented high temperature sintering of active metal components such as Ni (or Cu) on the surface and played a role of dispersing the active species homogeneously in solid solution of mixed oxides.
