  • In this paper, we have studied the evolution of morphology and brazing behavior of Ag-28Cu alloy filler processed by high energy ball milling. The milling of the powder mixture was carried out for 40 h. The structural and morphological analyses were performed by the X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The melting temperature of the braze filler was determined by differential thermal analysis. The filler wetting properties were assessed from the spread area ratio measurements on various Ti substrates. The results indicate that the ball milling can effectively depress the filler melting point and enhance the brazeability. The milled powder mixture showed Ag(Cu) solid solution with a crystallite size of 174-68 nm after 40 h. It was shown that the high energy ball milling can be a potential method to develop low temperature brazing fillers for advanced microjoining applications.

  • $H_2S$ micro-gas sensors have been developed employing $SnO_2$:CuO composite thin films. The films were prepared by e-beam evaporation of Sn and Cu metals on silicon substrates, followed by oxidation at high temperatures. Results of various studies, such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) reveal that $SnO_2$ and CuO are mutually non-reactive. The CuO grains, which in turn reside in the inter-granular regions of $SnO_2$, inhibit grain growth of $SnO_2$ as well as forming a network of p-n junctions. The film showed more than a 90% relative resistance change when exposed to $H_2S$ gas at 1 ppm in air at an operating temperature of $350^{\circ}C$ and had a short response time of 8 sec.

  • We report on the succesful fabrication of ZnO nanorod (NR)-based robust piezoelectric nanogenerators (PNGs) by using Cu foil substrate. The ZnO NRs are successfully grown on the Cu foil substrate by using all solution based method, a two step hydrothermal synthesis. The ZnO NRs are grown along c-axis well with an average diameter of 75~80 nm and length of $1{\sim}1.5{\mu}m$. The ZnO NRs showed abnormal photoluminescence specrta which is attributed from surface plasmon resonance assistant enhancement at specific wavelength. The PNGs on the SUS substrates show typical piezoelectric output performance which showing a frequency dependent voltage enhancement and polarity dependent charging and discharging characteristics. The output voltage range is 0.79~2.28 V with variation of input strain frequency of 1.8~3.9 Hz. The PNG on Cu foil shows reliable output performance even at the operation over 200 times without showing degradation of output voltage. The current output from the PNG is $0.7{\mu}A/cm^2$ which is a typical out-put range from the ZnO NR-based PNGs. These performance enhancement is attributed from the high flexibility, high electrical conductivity and excellent heat dissipation properties of the Cu foil as a substrate.

  • We fabricated Ni-based alloy substrates for YBCO coated conductor using powder metallurgy. Tungsten and copper were selected as alloy elements due to their mutual solubility to the base element of nickel. The alloying elements were mixed with nickel using ball milling and dried in air. The powder mixtures were packed in a rubber mold, cold isostatic pressed 200 MPa and made into rods. The compacted rods were sintered at $1150^{\circ}C$ for 6 hours for densification. It was confirmed by neutron diffraction experiment that W and Cu atoms made complete solid solution with Ni. Lattice constant of nickel alloy increased by $0.004{\AA}$ for 1at. $\%$ W in Ni-W alloy, $0.0006{\AA}$ for 1 at. $\%$ Cu in Ni-W-Cu alloy.

  • To establish the deposition condition of YBCO thin film on MgO single crystal substrates, processing parameters of deposition temperature, chemical composition and oxygen partial pressure were controlled. When using a Ba-deficient composition of YB $a_{1.8}$ $Cu_3$$O_{x}$, non-superconducting phase like CuO, $CuYO_2$ were formed, but BaCu02 was formed together with Yl23 phase when the starting composition was Ba-rich ($YBa_{2.3}$ $Cu_3$ $O_{x}$). The epitaxially grown Yl23 phase was formed at 760-$810^{\circ}C$ and $P_{O2}$=0.29-0.91 Torr.r.r.r.

  • The epitaxial Cu-doped ZnO and pure ZnO thin films were grown on Al2O3 (0001) substrates by RF sputtering method. The structures and crystallographic orientations were investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. From the XRD pattern, it is observed that peak positions shift towards higher $2{\theta}$ value with Cu doping. The ${\omega}$-scan measurements at the (0002) diffraction peak for these samples reveal that the full-widths at half-maxima (FWHMs) are about $0.017-0.019^{\circ}$, which indicate a good c-axis orientation of the Zn1-xCuxO films. From phi-scan, all of the Zn1-xCuxO films were epitaxially grown. EXAFS measurements also demonstrated that Cu incorporated into a Zn-atom position substitutionally. All the results confirmed that copper ion were well incorporated into the ZnO lattices by substituting Zn sites without changing the wurtzite structure and no secondary phase existed in Cu-doped ZnO thin films.

  • The microstructure of intermixed $Zn_{1-x}Fe_xSe$ layers in the (ZnSe/FeSe) superstrates grown on (00l) GaAs substrates has been investigated by high -resolution transmission electron microscopy and computer simulations of lattice images. Computer image simulations have been performed by the multislice method under various sample thicknesses and defocusing conditions. The simulated lattice images were compared with the experimental lattice images. Also, CuAu-I type ordering was often observed in the intermixed $Zn_{1-x}Fe_xSe$ alloys. This CuAu-I type ordered structure consists of alternating ZnSe and FeSe monolayers along the <100> and <110> directions.

  • Copper-Phthalocyanine (Cu-Pc) thin films of 100nm thickness have been deposited on silicon substrates as the different heating temperatures by thermal evaporation deposition technique. X-ray patterns showed with different temperature conditions at the $2\theta$ range of 5-$55^{\circ}$. The surface roughness of Cu-Pc thin films was investigated by using an atomic force microscope (AFM). A scanning electron microscope (SEM) has been used to characterize the micro-structures and morphologies depended on the substrate temperatures.

  • $CuInSe_2$ (CIS) thin films were electrodeposited on Mo-coated glass substrates in acidic solutions containing $Cu^{2+}$, $In^{3+}$, and $Se^{4+}$ ions, depending on deposition parameters such as deposition potential (-0.4 to -0.8 V[SCE]) and pH (1.7 to 1.9). The influences of PH and deposition potential on the atomic composition of Cu, In, and Se in the deposited films were observed. The best chemical composition, approaching 1:1:2 atomic ratio for the elements, was achieved at -0.5 V (SCE) and pH 1.8. The as-deposited films showed low crystallinity and were annealed at 300 to $500^{\circ}C$ for 30 min to improve crystallization. The surface morphologies, microstructures, and crystallographic structures of the annealed films as well as the as-deposited films were analyzed with AFM, SEM, and XRD. The defects of spherical particles appeared on the surfaces of CIS thin films in the as-deposited state and decreased in size and number with increasing annealing temperatures. Additionally, the crystallization to chalcopyrite structure and surface roughness (Ra) of the as-deposited thin films were improved with the annealing process.

  • We report the changes of the microwave reflection coefficients S$_{11}$ of copper(II)-phthalocyanine (CuPc) thin films by using a near-field microwave microscope(NSMM) in order to understand the phase transition of CuPc. For a NSMM system, a high-quality microstrip resonator coupled with a dielectric resonator was used. CuPc thin films were prepared on the pre-heated glass substrates using a thermal evaporation method. The reflection coefficients S$_{11}$ of CuPc thin films were changed by the dependence on the substrate pre-heating temperatures. By comparing reflection coefficient S$_{11}$ and crystal structures, we found the phase transition of CuPc thin films from $\alpha$-phase to $\beta$-phase at the substrate heating temperature 200 $^{\circ}C$./TEX>.
